美国民谣乐手麻雀四重奏 Superstars of American Folk The Sparrow Quartet

For the third time in as many years, I get to let you all know about the imminent performances of one Abigail Washburn, a singing-songwriting banjo player, former China resident,and Mandarin speaker and singer. This year, she’s back with the same folks she brought last year (yes, that includes now-nine-time Grammy winner Bela Fleck), but this time around, they’ve got a new name: The Sparrow Quartet.After last year’s tour of Shanghai and Beijing ---the first time the four had played together --- the group reunited in the US for a select few shows and to record an EP (which will be available at their China shows). This year, the American Center for Educational Exchange and the Embassy/Consulates are sending the group to Tibet for shows at universities and high schools in Lhasa and Nyintri (Linzhi); after shows in Guangzhou through the Consulate there we’ll head to Shanghai for shows at Cotton Club and JZ (and at the Conservatory), and then back to Beijing for two shows (for which advanced tix are already on sale!) and a visit to the Midi School. Bela Fleck (banjo): The biggest name in banjo has won nine Grammy Awards and has been nominated in more categories than anyone in Grammy history. Bela has taken the banjo into --- and beyond --- rock, jazz, classical, world music and more. Recent months have seen him performing concertos with bass and tabla, jazz with Chick Corea, and roaming Africa tracing the roots of his instrument. Casey Driessen (fiddle): In addition to two previous trips to China with Abigail, Casey has performed with legendary musicians Bela Fleck, Steve Earle, Tim O’Brien and others. While a highly sought-after sideman in the bluegrass/newgrass circuit, Casey has just gone solo, releasing his debut 3D on Sugar Hill Records.
