利兹音乐学院一直被誉为是爵士乐先锋学院。在课程负责人Jamil Sheriff领导下，并得到众多著名爵士音乐家和专业教学从业者的支持，这里毫无疑问是爵士乐学习者最理想的地方。这门高度合作的课程将会塑造学生的前瞻性思维，除了传统学习之外，还需要学生把音乐带到新的维度。

即兴创作是爵士乐的精髓，这也是利兹音乐学院所推崇的生活方式，这里提供每一位学生互相协作支持的环境，学生可以自由在这里探索、实验和创造自己的作品。

除了一对一专业课程教学，学生还可以组建新的乐队，发展作曲、音乐和批判性的技巧，并接受来自其他杰出的表演者、作曲家和音乐界专业人士的专业意见和指导。学校在给予自己校内乐团高度重视之外（包括Contemporary Jazz Orchestra和学生大联盟乐团），走出利兹音乐学院的演出机会也很多，学生和教师合作，在学院常规的B-Side nights演出以及Cut Throat和Undercurrent。每周一的即兴演出还能与BBC合作。

利兹音乐学院还与Jazz Leeds Festival、the Village Jazz Festival以及其他爵士音乐节有着密切合作关系。

《卫报》对于Jamil Sheriff的评价是：对英格兰北部爵士乐的活力作出真正改变的人。他与许多艺术家合作，并录制了四张专辑，每张专辑都获得了国内和国际的赞誉。

Jazz UK形容他的音乐是既有活力又复杂。

Jamll也是一位作曲家、编曲及钢琴家，曾于英国各地巡回演出，并在国内及国际爵士音乐节演出。

Lauren Kinsella

伦敦大学皇家音乐学院硕士。

Lauren Kinsella出生于爱尔兰，是一位作曲家和歌手。她的表演风格多种多样，从爵士乐、民谣、当代古典音乐到优美的诗歌和自由即兴演奏。

2017年获得艺术基金会爵士乐作曲奖、2016年荣获Jazz FM Awards年度最佳歌手、2015年获得Birmingham Jazzlines Fellowship以及2013年the Kenny Wheeler Prize。

Lauren Kinsella同时还是一位跨界戏剧音乐家，她的作品《Somewhere in Between》首演于Birmingham Literature festival，此部作品是与爱尔兰著名演员Peter Campion合作。

Performers

You may choose one of the following two options

Perform two Jazz standards (with the ensemble) chosen from the repertoire list (see below),

demonstrating your skills in Jazz improvisation and your ability to play with an ensemble.

Perform one Jazz standard (with the ensemble) from the repertoire list (see below) and one

solo piece. The solo piece must represent your current strengths on your chosen instrument. Original compositions or improvisations are acceptable.The solo piece must not be performed with a play along.

You will be asked to improvise over a given chord progression at sight in an ensemble setting.

You will be asked to sight read a short piece of music which will be given to you on the day.

You may be asked for scales/technical exercises as appropriate to your instrument and level.

You will have a short interview, where we will explore your general musical knowledge and

interests.

Composers

You will have a structured interview based on your portfolio of compositions (you need to bring scores and any recordings if appropriate). The portfolio should consist of at least two contrasting compositions (or part thereof) - maximum length 10 minutes in total.

You will be asked to perform one Jazz standard chosen from the repertoire list (see below), demonstrating your skills in Jazz improvisation and your ability to play with an ensemble.

You will be asked to improvise over a given chord progression at sight in an ensemble setting.

You may be asked for scales/technical exercises as appropriate to your instrument and level.
