Baidu mixes search results with advertisements .
While Google shows the two in separate areas that are clearly identified, Baidu allows ads to appear on the left side of the screen, where most users would expect to find unbiased results from the search engine, and the ads were not identified as “sponsored links,” as they would be on Google.
This can lead to higher revenues as unwary users click on links that are in fact paid ads. Therefore, much of the advantage enjoyed by Baidu over Google in China is due not to differences in the business model, but to differences in execution.
As I mentioned, Google separates the two clearly, believing in the importance of objective search results, as its IPO prospectus stated, “The advertising is clearly marked and separated. This is similar to a newspaper, where the articles are independent of the advertising.”
I believe, eventually, Baidu will have to clean up its act. This might lead to a short-term loss of revenue, but it will make the company much stronger and the industry much healthier in the long run.
