[Scene, Monica and Rachel's, Monica and Ross are pouring wine for their parents.]

Mrs. Geller: Oh, Martha Ludwin's daughter is gonna call you. (Tastes a snack) Mmm! What's that curry taste?

snack n. a small amount of food that is eaten between main meals or instead of a meal 小吃，吃食

curry n. a type of food from India, consisting of meat or vegetables in a spicy sauce 咖喱

Monica: Curry.

Mrs. Geller: Mmmm!

看剧的时候，这两声Mmmm笑死我，Mon的脸都绿了……

Ross: I think they're great! I really do.

Mr. Geller: (To Ross) Do you remember the Ludwins? The big one had a thing for you, didn't she?

have a thing for sb. 对某人有好感，对某人有意思

个人感觉是有点像之前说过的 have a crush on sb. 但是没那么强烈~

Mrs. Geller: They all had a thing for him.

哈哈哈哈哈哈果然是prince~

Ross: Aw, Mom...

Monica: I'm sorry, why is this girl going to call me?

Mrs. Geller: Oh, she just graduated, and she wants to be something in cooking, or food, or.... I don't know. Anyway, I told her you had a restaurant-

graduate v. to complete your education 毕业

Monica: No Mom, I don't have a restaurant, I work in a restaurant.

Mrs. Geller: Well, they don't have to know that... (She starts to fluff the same pillow Monica fluffed multiple times earlier.)

multiple adj. many, or involving many things, people, events etc许多

Mon的妈妈开始拍那个Mon之前拍了N次的枕头……

哇。我第一次看这段的时候又好笑又气！不管Mon做的怎么样，她妈妈总是会挑刺找茬，这个枕头不过是一个小小的缩影~

果然Mon抓狂是有原因的！心疼

Monica: Ross, could you come and help me with the spaghetti, please?

spaghetti n. a type of pasta in very long thin pieces, that is cooked in boiling water 意大利面

Ross: Yeah. (They go to the kitchen.)

Mrs. Geller: Oh, we're having spaghetti! That's.... easy.

Monica: I know this is going to sound unbelievably selfish, but, were you planning on bringing up the whole baby/lesbian thing? Because I think it might take some of the heat off me.

unbelievably adv. very difficult to believe 难以置信地

→ unbelievable adj. 难以置信的，令人震惊的

plan on doing sth. 计划做某事

bring up to mention a subject or start to talk about it 提出，提及

it might take some of the heat off me.

我们可以看出来，Ross和Mon的父母非常偏爱Ross, 对Mon言语中透露出百般挑剔（Ross学习好，从小到大都是父母眼中的乖儿子），因此Mon想让Ross对父母坦白自己lesbian妻子的事儿，好分担一下自己的压力，让父母转移注意力，别再盯着自己。

我们有句成语说，引火烧身，这里Mon把自己承担的压力比作heat。

(Time Lapse, everyone is now eating.)

Mrs. Geller: What that Rachel did to her life.... We ran into her parents at the club, they were not playing very well.

run into v. to meet someone by chance 偶遇

they were not playing very well.

这里play的用法大家要注意，意思是，他们看起来情况不好，状态不好

Mr. Geller: I'm not gonna tell you what they spent on that wedding... but forty thousand dollars is a lot of money!

哈哈哈哈哈，Mon爸爸好八卦，说着不说不说，一转折，又说了！

Mrs. Geller: Well, at least she had the chance to leave a man at the altar...

altar n. a holy table or surface used in religious ceremonies 圣坛

Mon的妈妈真的好像我们听说的那种阴阳怪气的妈妈……

原来歪果父母也催婚，也是这样子的~

Monica: What's that supposed to mean?

Mrs. Geller: Nothing! It's an expression.

expression n. a word or group of words with a particular meaning 表达

Monica: No it's not.

Mr. Geller: Don't listen to your mother. You're independent, and you always have been! Even when you were a kid... and you were chubby, and you had no friends, you were just fine! And you would read alone in your room, and your puzzles...

independent adj. confident and able to do things by yourself in your own way, without needing help or advice from other people 独立的

chubby adj. slightly fat in a way that looks healthy and attractive 胖乎乎的，丰满的（非贬义）

puzzle n. a game or toy that has a lot of pieces that you have to fit together 拼图

(Time Lapse.)

Mr. Geller: Look, there are people like Ross who need to shoot for the stars, with his museum, and his papers getting published. Other people are satisfied with staying where they are- I'm telling you, these are the people who never get cancer.

shoot for the stars to aim for something that is very difficult to achieve 追求卓越 = reach for the stars

be satisfied with sth. feeling that something is as good as it should be, or that something has happened in the way that you want 满足的，满意的

cancer n. a very serious disease in which cells in one part of the body start to grow in a way that is not normal 癌症

有些人，像Ross生来就是要追求卓越的，在博物馆工作，发表论文……另外一些人对自己的现状就很满意，我告诉你，这种人绝不会得癌症。

Mon的爸爸试图安慰Mon，结果……

Mr. Geller: ...And I read about these women trying to have it all, and I thank God 'Our Little Harmonica' doesn't seem to have that problem.

harmonica n. a small musical instrument that you play by blowing or sucking and moving it from side to side near your mouth 口琴

这里Mon的爸爸巧妙的用了一个双关，把monica的名字说成harmonica，口琴的意思，是亲昵的爱称~

Monica: (trying desperately to change the subject) So, Ross, what's going on with you? Any stories? (Digs her elbow into his hand.) No news, no little anecdotes to share with the folks?

desperately adv. in a desperate way

→ desperate adj. willing to do anything to change a very bad situation, and not caring about danger 绝望的，拼命的

dig v. to put your hand into something, especially in order to search for something 戳

elbow n. the joint where your arm bends 肘部

anecdote n. a short story based on your personal experience 趣闻，轶事

folks n. especially American English your parents and family 父母，亲人

Mon忍不住了，拼命地想转移话题，让Ross说lesbian的事儿~

Ross: (pulls his hand away) Okay! Okay. (To his parents) Look, I, uh- I realise you guys have been wondering what exactly happened between Carol and me, and, so, well, here's the deal. Carol's a lesbian. She's living with a woman named Susan. She's pregnant with my child, and she and Susan are going to raise the baby.、

here's the deal 事情是这样的，地道口语表达

raise v. 有很多意思，在这里是指：to look after your children and help them grow 抚养孩子

(Stunned silence ensues.)

ensue v. to happen after or as a result of something 接着发生

Mrs. Geller: (To Monica) And you knew about this?!

你早就知道了（却不告诉我们）？

可怜的Mon，没想到这件事战火也会转移到自己身上……

[Scene: Central Park, everyone's there.]

Joey: Your folks are really that bad, huh?

Ross: Well, y'know, these people are pros. They know what they're doing, they take their time, they get the job done.

pro 是 professional 的简写

→ professional n. showing that someone has been well trained and is good at their work 专业人员

take one's time to do something slowly or carefully without hurrying 做事从容不迫，有条不紊

Monica: Boy, I know they say you can't change your parents,... boy, if you could- (To Ross) I'd want yours.

Ross: Must pee. (Goes to pee.)

pee informal to pass liquid waste from your body 尿尿 也可作名词

Phoebe: Y'know, it's even worse when you're twins.

Rachel: You're twins?

Phoebe: Yeah. We don't speak. She's like this high-powered, driven-career type.

high-powered adj. very important or successful 重要的，地位高的

driven adj. trying extremely hard to achieve what you want 奋发努力的

career n. a job or profession that you have been trained for, and which you do for a long period of your life 事业

driven-career 一心追求事业的，事业心很强的

Chandler: What does she do?

Phoebe: She's a waitress.

这个职业和上面的形容词真的很“匹配”呢

Rachel: All right, you guys, I kinda gotta clean up now. (They all start to leave.)

Monica: Chandler, you're an only child, right? You don't have any of this.

only child n.独生子

中国的独生子女政策可说： One Child Policy 或者说 Only child policy（少用）

Chandler: Well, no, although I did have an imaginary friend, who... my parents actually preferred.

imaginary adj. not real, but produced from pictures or ideas in your mind 想象的

prefer v. to like someone or something more than someone or something else, so that you would choose it if you could偏爱，更喜欢

→ preference n. 偏爱

Rachel: The lights, please.

(Joey turns off the lights, and they all leave as Rachel starts to clean up. Ross enters from the bathroom.)

Ross: ...How long was I in there?

哈哈哈哈Ross去厕所前，大家都还在，热热闹闹的，结果一出来，人走了，灯黑了，所以他问，我是去了多久？

Rachel: I'm just cleaning up.

Ross: D'ya.. uh.. d'ya need any help?

Rachel: Uh.. okay, sure! Thanks! (She hands him the broom and sits down.)

hand 是“手”我们很熟悉，但是这里是动词，to give something to someone else with your hand，交给，递给

Ross: Anyway.. um.. (Starts to sweep.) So, you- uh- you nervous about Barry tomorrow?

sweep v. to clean the dust, dirt etc from the floor or ground, using a brush with a long handle 扫地

Rachel: Oh.. a little..

Ross: Mm-hmm..

Rachel: A lot.

Ross: Mm.

Rachel: So, got any advice? Y'know, as someone who's recently been dumped?

dump之前讲过，有甩人的意思

Ross: Well, you may wanna steer clear of the word 'dumped'. Chances are he's gonna be this broken shell of a man, y'know, so you should try not to look too terrific, I know it'll be hard. Or, y'know, uh, hey!, I'll go down there, and I'll give Barry back his ring, and you can go with Carol and Susan to the OB/GYN...

steer clear of informal to avoid someone or something unpleasant or difficult 避开，避免

steer v. to control the direction a vehicle is going, for example by turning a wheel； to guide someone’s behaviour or the way a situation develops 操纵，引导，控制

chances are ＋（that）+句子……很有可能

broken shell of a man 看上去很心碎的样子

这句话是说，Barry被甩了，很可能会看上去很心碎，很痛苦

terrific adj. informal very good, especially in a way that makes you feel happy and excited 极好的，状态很棒的

OB → obstetrics n. the part of medical science that deals with the birth of children 产科学

GYN →gynaecology n.the study and treatment of medical conditions and illnesses that affect only women, and usually relating to a woman’s ability to have babies 妇科学

Rachel: Oh, you've got Carol tomorrow. When did it get so complicated?

complicated adj. difficult to understand or deal with, because many parts or details are involved 复杂的

Ross: Got me.

got me → you’ve got me (there)

used to say you do not know the answer to something 把我难住了

Rachel: Remember when we were in high school together?

Ross: Yeah.

Rachel: I mean, didn't you think you were just gonna meet somone, fall in love- and that'd be it? (Ross gazes at her.) ..Ross?

fall in love 陷入爱河

that'd be it used to say that something is completely finished or that a situation cannot be changed 就是这样，这就是结局

gaze v. to look at someone or something for a long time, giving it all your attention, often without realizing you are doing so 凝视

gaze at sb. 盯着某人，长时间的看某人

这里Rachel感慨道，我们还以为一辈子会那么简单，遇到一个人然后相爱，厮守一生……听到这句话，Ross失神地盯着Rachel，因为他高中的暗恋对象正是Rachel，那时候他应该也有同样的憧憬吧……

Ross: Yes, yes!

Rachel: Oh! Man, I never thought I'd be here.. (She leans back onto his hand.)

lean v. to move or bend your body in a particular direction 倾斜

Ross: Me either... (He pulls up a stool so that he doesn't have to move his hand.)

pull up a chair/stool etc to get a chair etc and sit down next to someone who is already sitting 拉个凳子坐在一边

stool n. a seat that has three or four legs, but no back or arms 凳子
