I think I asked my friend to let me see his/her magazine or something, but the visual was just so cool. Their hairs are up, and Atsushi Sakurai is really gorgeous. The moment I saw them, I was like “What is this!” I received a shock. And I tried listening to songs by BUCK-TICK, but they were quiet songs, so I was a little disappointed. But concerning visuals, it was Sakurai-san for me where I definitely got into the style of those people. Then, I listened to X (Japan) and D’erlanger because my friend influenced me, and I thought, “Ah, this may be it.” The tempo was fast and it was fierce.” - SHOXX No 70 December 1998 - Kyo Interview The first time you put on make-up? " I was 16 years old. At that time, I was a roadie of a certain band, at an event they decided to do a session, and I did the vocals for the roadie group. At that time, it was my first time to put on make-up. I looked at people put on make-up, and also looked at different musician's make-up, I really researched it. It wasn't really a specific person. It was like "this person's eyebrows are nice", I did different combinations. In the past, I loved hide-san's make-up. At that time, I wasn't good at putting on make-up, after that when we made flyers for a band that we formed, its not that weird when I even look at it now. It seems that I've always been good at make-up." - Arena37 No. 213 June 2000 First Time Interview - Kyo First time you changed your hair color? "During middle school. I forgot which year but I dyed it really really brown, and as it happens they were going to be taking school pictures so the next day I was forced to dye it black. At that time it wasn't really related to the band and I dyed it because I got tired of it being black. I mean during middle school, black hair wasn't trendy right? But my teacher told me, "Your hair, its brown", when I answered, "Huh? Yeah its brown", the teacher then said "on the way home let's go buy hair dye (for white hair) together". I couldn't escape since we were together the whole time. " That’s right. That’s why, young kids who do bands now, I think there are kids who liked me and do things (that are similar). But there was a period when I suddenly changed, right? What I wanted them to see was, I wanted them to see not that visual aspect but the spiritual/mental aspect. "Yes. Well, the kids these days would take a look at my different visual aspect and think, “this is new”, they’d put on tons of piercings, wear glasses…I’d think, “are you idiots? Until then I sang while drooling・・・Yeah (laughs). I had an uncool image, right? It was how can I be able to show it coolly? Or how do I destroy an image…in contrast, who cares (about the image until then). Even regarding stage blood, it’s not that my singing was the main thing but because I was certain that that wanted to do it as performer. That’s why I didn’t mind if my singing was bad, but the feeling that I wanted to make an expression that when you watch you’d think “Awesome!” was stronger." - Foolsmate No. 255 January 2003 - Kyo Solo Interview I see. For example the shock that you got from Sakurai-san and Kiyoharu-san, that shock that you thought was “Awesome!”, that is something that you want to give to people. "Yes. It’s not that I want to express myself with singing, and it’s not like I want to become better at singing…when my ear couldn’t hear, I didn’t care if I couldn’t sing well, right. Then what’s left in me is…the way left for me to keep on being as a vocalist was being a performer and the power of expression, it was narrowed down to those two. That’s why, that thought became all the more stronger." - Foolsmate No. 255 January 2003 - Kyo Solo Interview People looking at Dir en grey 10 years ago would have seen a much more flamboyant, stylised band than today. Did you feel that the more extravagant fashions of the visual kei scene were detracting from the seriousness of your lyrics? "Well, in the beginning our focus was always on the music, and the term "visual kei" didn't even exist. Although we wore heavy make-up we weren't trying to look beautiful as visual kei bands do. But as the scene got more popular it became more common for bands to wear make-up, and we didn't want to be associated with a lot of the poor quality bands in that scene. We wanted to use our whole bodies to express ourselves rather than just our faces or our clothes." - Kerrang! - Nov. 22nd, 2008; Interview with Kyo. "I want to express the power created by the audience and the power brought by the members without thinking of anything.
