After singing about vicars, eggs and taxlosses and using Winnie the Pooh to influence their lyrics, have they finally lost their madness? Ian Longdon talks to bassist Stove King. So, you’re in full flow writing and recording new material and it’s going well but then you stop, go out on tour, play to small venues and test the tracks on the fans. It’s different, yet could only happen on planet Mansun. 'Different' has been used often to describe the four-piece who burst onto the scene in the mid 1990’s - different styles, sounds and even outfits. But now they’re back as a stripped down indie/rock outfit. “We’re returning to be an ‘in yer face’ guitar band and the new tracks show that,” explains Stove. Whilst there isn’t a clapometer on stage to gauge the crowd’s reaction, the band has used the jaunt around the country to see how the latest offering goes down. Luckily, it’s been well received. “It’s really interesting asking them what kind of tracks they like, it’s great. We wanted to get out, play live, be seen again and almost say ‘we’re still here!’ The reaction has been good and we may go back and tweak one or two things as a result of that reaction. I think these gigs have been the best we’ve done, it’s gone well.” Certainly the first reaction to the new material is that it sounds similar to their last album “Little Kix” but with a bit more depth to it. “Getting Your Way”, “This is my Home” and “Slipping Away” are some of the songs debuted but it’s a track called “Secrets” that Stove says has gone down best. “A couple of tracks are potential singles, we don’t yet know which ones to go for but everyone is talking about this track but it can’t be a single, it’s an album track only. It works really well live with the drums, guitars and bass rift and its like “Shotgun” from the “Six” album.” But when it comes to deciding what will go on the new as yet untitled album, how big a part will the fans’ views play? “We always tend to do what we want to and everyone just seems to like it but it is interesting to do this. It’s difficult at times because we’ll do a track like “Wide Open Space” (a top twenty hit in 1996) and the crowd knows it and goes mad, then we’ll play a new one and everyone just stands there and we wonder whether they like it. But they’re listening and that’s what I would do if I were them! We get a lot of reaction after the gig.” “At the end of the day you wouldn’t be there without the fans really. When we first started we had no support from the press and would play to only four people but they would go away and tell their friends. Now we’re there for them and they’re there for us and its good to get involved. Lots of them run web-sites and fanzines and contact us to arrange interviews and we’re happy to do it. Fanzines are great, I love reading them, just a bit of paper with a staple in the corner but its brilliant.” Mansun have been described as a cult band with fans copying their changes in fashion – and there have been a few. Everything from boiler suits to army combat gear with safety pin ridden punk outfits in between, so what next in the weird and wacky wardrobe? “I think the fashion has died down a bit now and we dress normally,” Stove laughs. “It was mad but good fun, though I haven’t seen a boiler suit for a long time! I think everyone in all walks of life looks back and cringes at what they wore in the past.” 看这里:Once decided, the new single will be released in October followed by their fourth album and a massive tour. The world needs Mansun back according to Stove. “It seems to be all pop at the moment. I don’t think there has been a major band to break through in ages with the exception of Coldplay who were the last band since us to have a number one debut album. That’s sad really, no-one is coming through.” So what has been on the Mansun tour-bus stereo then? “We’ve been listening to the new Doves album, we like them, but that’s it. I think Coldplay’s new album is due out soon and Suede and the Manics. Athlete (who’ve just supported Mansun) have gone down well and hopefully there’ll be a few more on the scene soon.” Ian Longdon
