I saw some random interview with Jerry via a Google alert where he is talking about playing in Scotland. I'm sure he has said this before, but I still LOL'd when I read it:

Are you looking forward to getting back to Scotland? I can't wait. We always have a great time in Scotland. I'll have to pack my kilt up. The last time I was over I bought a kilt and wore it on stage, so I am going to have to bring it back perhaps for an encore performance. I wore it like a true Scotsman, bareunderneath. It felt a little breezy, which was nice on a hot, sweaty stage. Everybody is down below you so that foot on the monitor thing doesn't work so well.

Upon the retirement of Alice in Chains' manager, Susan Silver, in 1998, The Rocket published an article asking the question "But who's to wipe and clean Alice in Chains now?", supposedly a jab at the rumors of Staley's addiction.Joe Ehrbar, the editor of The Rocket at that time, said, "A few days later, we received a package containing a jar of piss and a bag of shit, with a note attached saying, 'Wipe and change this, motherfuckers!' It had to be from Layne. What a classic response.'"

Cantrell's father, Jerry Sr., is a combat veteran of the Vietnam War. He was the main subject in the song "Rooster" which Cantrell wrote as a tribute to his father. Jerry's first childhood memory is meeting his father for the first time after he had returned from war. Due to the strain of war, his parents divorced and Jerry lived with his mother, Gloria.Cantrell's mother, Gloria Jean Cantrell, died in 1987. His close friend Andrew Wood (of Mother Love Bone) died in 1990, leading Jerry to pen the song "Would?" for AIC's second album Dirt in Wood's memory. He also dedicated AIC's debut album Facelift to Wood, as well as his late mother. After residing in Seattle for many years, Cantrell moved to Los Angeles, California in mid 2003 by which time he had stopped his heavy drug use. The peculiarity of this transition would be expressed in the song "Check My Brain".

From 1999 to 2002, Staley became more reclusive, rarely leaving his Seattle condo; little is known about the details of his life during this period. It was rumored that Staley would spend most of his days creating art, playing video games, or nodding off on drugs. Staley's mother owns the last known photo of Staley, taken in November 2001, which features him holding his new-born nephew, Oscar, although the photo has never been published. Other than this rare incident, Staley was not seen often by family or friends. In his last interview, Staley stated, "Don't try to contact any AIC (Alice in Chains) members. They are not my friends."Kinney has commented on Staley's final years and isolation period:

"I kept trying to make contact...Three times a week, like clockwork, I'd call him, but he'd never answer. Every time I was in the area, I was up in front of his place yelling for him...Even if you could get in his building, he wasn't going to open the door. You'd phone and he wouldn't answer. You couldn't just kick the door in and grab him, though there were so many times I thought about doing that. But if someone won't help themselves, what, really, can anyone else do?"

In his last interview, given in early 2002 months before his death, Staley admitted, "I know I'm near death, I did crack and heroin for years. I never wanted to end my life this way." Staley's physical appearance had become even worse than before: he had lost several teeth, his skin was sickly pale, and he was severely gaunt. In the same interview Staley spoke of the damage caused by his heroin addiction:

"I'm not using drugs to get high like many people think. I know I made a big mistake when I started using this shit. It's a very difficult thing to explain. My liver is not functioning, and I'm throwing up all the time and shitting my pants. The pain is more than you can handle. It's the worst pain in the world. Dope sick hurts the entire body."

As far as published reports are concerned, such as Blender's "We Left Him Alone", close friends such as Matt Fox have said, "If no one heard from him for weeks, it wasn’t unusual." Further in the article, reporter Pat Kearney provides a glimpse into Staley's daily life and public routine:

"It appears that Staley’s last few weeks were typically empty. According to an employee of the Rainbow, a neighborhood bar close to Staley’s condo, the singer was a frequent patron, stopping by at least once a week. 'He minded his own business,' said the employee, who wished to remain anonymous. Staley would never buy anything to drink, the employee said, but would simply sit at a small table in the back corner of the bar and 'nod off. We just left him alone'."

Staley's close friend Mark Lanegan had much of the same to say with respect to Staley's isolation: "He didn't speak to anybody as of late… It's been a few months since I talked to him. But for us to not talk for a few months is par for the course."

    What happened to Mike Starr?

The press releases said "Amicable departure... rigors of touring... wanted to spend more time with his family," etc. The rumor mill has produced stories of drug use and illegal sales of laminates, etc. Use your imagination. Mike Starr was also later arrested and convicted of misdemeanor theft and possession of marijuana in Houston, TX for stealing luggage at a Texas airport. He was sentenced and served 90 days in a Lewis County jail. He later formed a "traditional" metal band called Sun Red Sun, which released only one album before breaking up due to the death of their singer, former Badlands vocalist Ray Gillen. Mike Starr left Alice In Chains in January of 1993.

    Mike Starr

    Death

On April 19, 2002, Staley's accountants contacted Staley's mother Nancy McCallum and informed her that no money had been withdrawn from the singer's bank account in two weeks. McCallum then placed a call with 911 to say "she hadn't heard from… [Staley] in about two weeks."[32] The police went with McCallum and her husband to Staley's home, where Staley was found dead.[8] As reported by Rick Anderson of the Seattle Weekly, his body was surrounded, needle in arm, by various drug possessions and paraphernalia: Staley's mother asked police if she could move things off of the couch and spoke to the remains of Staley. "When police kicked in the door to Layne Staley's University District apartment on April 20, there, on a couch, lit by a flickering TV, next to several spray-paint cans on the floor, not far from a small stash of cocaine, near two crack pipes on the coffee table, reposed the remains of the rock musician." The article also stated that the 6'1" Staley weighed just 86 pounds when his body was discovered.[33] The autopsy report later concluded that Staley had died after injecting a mixture of heroin and cocaine known as a "speedball".

In an interview on VH1's Celebrity Rehab with McCallum, former Alice in Chains bass player Mike Starr said that he spent time with Staley the day before he died as Starr's birthday was April 4. Starr claims that Staley was very sick but would not call 911. The two ex-bandmates briefly argued, which ended with Starr storming out. Starr stated that Staley called after him as he left "Not like this, don't leave like this". Since Staley is believed to have died a day later, on April 5, Starr has expressed regret that he did not call 911 to save his friend's life; Starr reported that Staley had threatened to sever their friendship if he did. Starr was the last known person to see Staley alive. The interview ended with Starr apologizing to McCallum for not calling 911, but McCallum was insistent that neither she nor anyone in her family blamed Starr for Staley's death. She also told Starr: "Layne would forgive you. He'd say, 'Hey, I did this. Not you.'" With that said, Starr still blamed himself for the death of Staley, possibly even until his own death on March 8, 2011.

"Not like this, don't leave like this".

    Part of the Last Interview

Staley talked about his relationship with his family. He stressed that he's always been close to his mother Nancy McCallum, sister Liz and stepsister Jamie, but that when he was eight years old his father walked out on the family and Staley's life faded to black.

"My world became a nightmare," he said. "There were just shadows around me. I got [a] call saying that my dad had died, [but] my family always knew he was around doing all kind of drugs. Since that call I always was wondering, 'Where is my dad?' I felt so sad for him and I missed him. He dropped out of my life for 15 years."

Staley insisted he always knew he had the talent and creativity to be rock star, and thought that if he became a celebrity his dad would return. So he started writing songs in his teens and jamming with other musicians. At the same time, he did a bit of research to find out where his father was living and what kind of a man he was.

"When I was 16, I tried to find him without saying a word to my family," revealed Staley. "I did it for a long f---in' time, and what I found over the years was not good, so I changed my mind about wanting to see my dad again."

At that point, Staley focused all his energy on music, reveling in it as a cathartic outlet.

"I was about 20, and music became my only obsession to stay alive," he said. "I had the chance to throw out all this anger by the music in order to help others. It was therapeutic and worked [for] me for a while until my dad saw my picture printed on a magazine."

Just as Alice in Chains started to take off, the man Staley expended so much energy and anguish thinking about suddenly wanted to become a part of the rocker's life. The then 21-year-old singer was wary, but he still hoped seeing his dad again would help fill the hole in his heart.

"He said he'd been clean of drugs for six years," Staley related. "So, why in the hell didn't he come back before? I was very cautious at first. Then the relationship changed. My father started using drugs again. We did drugs together and I found myself in a miserable situation. He started visiting me all day to get high and do drugs with me. He came up to me just to get some sh--, and that's all. I was trying to kick this habit out of my life and here comes this man asking for money to buy some smack."

Being used by his father was one of the forces that contributed to Staley's downward slide.

In the summer of 1987, guitarist Jerry Cantrell walked in a raucous Seattle party and saw a man at the center of it all, with bright pink hair pilled atop his head by means of fire poker. "He had a big smile on his face, and he was sitting with two gorgeous women," Cantrell recalls of the moment he met Layne Staley. Cantrell didn't have a place to live, so Staley took him back to what passed for his residence - a dumpy, piss-smelling rehearsal studio where both would live for the next year. And when Cantrell heard Staley sing, he was convinced their friendship would be a lasting one: "I knew that voice was the guy I wanted to be playing with. It sounded like it came out of a 350- pound biker rather than skinny little Layne. I considered his voice to be my voice." Sometime in the first week of April, that oversize voice - which fueled a half-dozen radio hits and helped sell millions of albums - died along with Staley."

Last night’s Alice In Chains reunion show at the Bowery Ballroom in New York started with the crowd chanting “Jerry! Jerry!” for their hero, founding AIC guitarist Jerry Cantrell. But after an hour+ set of grunge hits, new singer William DuVall won them over to the extent that they began a chant for him too. They yelled, “New guy! New guy!!! New guy!!!” I swear, I’m not making this up…

Jerry!”。 New guy!!! New guy!!!”

    Part1.

Layne didn't graduate, he missed it by two credits.he did not graduate in 85 but went to school most all of the time, his favorite class was wood shop. If anyone has a year book from 1985 they will see him I believe standing in the front row of the cabinet making class. We attended Meadowdale high school(Meadowdale High School in Lynnwood) and hung out in the same "fringe" group of people...such as we would all go down and smoke at the fence at the bottom of the school together (which still exists just like 20 years ago, for I went there last year and took photos just because it felt like I was in a time warp) Our little smokers in the hole group would be considered "rockers/stoners/Goths" whatever, (though the term goth didn't exist back then though black was our color of choice!) The one thing we all had in common (besides wearing black) was that we were into heavy metal and went to every rock concert that came to Seattle. I'd save my money, wait in line to get tickets etc. we'd also party hardy. This is what our fringe group was about. There were also many levels to fringe, groups who hung out together etc. - I was not a part of Layne's group, as in we didn't hang out together, though one close friend of his , Mark, was also a pretty good friend of mine, he was into music and had all kinds of instruments and I had bought a guitar off of him. I know Layne hung out and played music with him. One of my best friends was going out with a guy who was a guitarist, and his brother a drummer, they lived on the same block as Layne, I think he'd go over there and play his drumset.

Do the guys in the band have any tattoos?

Absolutely! Jerry has a large Voodoo doll on his left arm, along with a creature wearing a Medusa mask. On his right shoulder, he has a big colorful skull. Layne also had a tattoo, on his back, representing eyes sewn shut, similar to the way he looks himself in the Man In The Box video. Sean has a nose-ring (which he secretly uses to communicate with Uranus, rumours say).

Man in the box MV里的他本人。

Alice In Chains lead singer Layne Staley is described as having a 3-4 inch penis, and a sexual disappointment. Not too surprising since he's an admitted hardcore heroin addict and heroin makes you lose your sex drive. Lead guitarist Jerry Cantrell has earned high praise for his sexual skills and knowing how to work his big penis. One lady who had an on-again, off-again relationship with him said that Jerry is "imaginative" and great in the oral sex department, but he sometimes liked to "gross her out with burping and farting." Another lady who encountered bassist Mike Inez says he's a great lover.

Layne also used to practice at my girlfriends house whose brother was also into music, this only two blocks from my parents house where I grew up in Edmonds. His name was Jason and strangely enough he died the same weekend as Layne (his death was by prescription drugs in a mental hospital) A close high school friend called me to let me know about Jason and Layne's death and we just sat on the phone in a sort of shocked silence for a time trying to grasp this "coincidence".

Back in the mid 80's I remember seeing Layne and Jason at my friends house, and my girlfriend whispering to me that Layne was singing now, which we of course thought was really funny - who do these guys think they are gonna be, the next AC/DC? Phfffft! Yeah, we thought they were freaks! But I also remember hearing that they were "getting pretty good" that they had some songs.. Back in the 80's with the huge superstar glam rock bands like Van Halen and Judas Priest touring the world and all of us thousands in line at the Key Arena at Seattle Center to get in to see them, you can imagine how small and pointless starting a band looks like, especially since this was Seattle - not L.A. - nothing happens in Seattle, and what did happen (Jimi Hendrix) is a fluke of nature. Growing up in this place at that school, I can see why Layne lied on that video of how he said he grew up in Bellevue - he totally wanted to disassociate from the whole Lynnwood-Meadowdale area, I'm sure

I teach art classes in Lynnwood now for the past five years, maybe because Lynnwood needs to wake the fuck up and there are a lot of little geniuses out there who are going to get squashed if they don't get some support!

At my 10 yr. reunion (1998) when I ran into Mark (Layne's good friend in high school) he said he still spoke to him and saw him on occasion and confided that Layne had told him he missed all of us, that we were his real friends. Of course I wasn't included in this personally but I believe he meant the whole "fringe" group we were a part of.

When I think back I believe getting high is a way to rebel against the straight thinking blue collar run of the mill road which the Lynnwood mentality wanted to pigeon hole us into, but also it was for mind expanding exploration, to see out of the box.

Pot of course, was the drug of choice in high school, but the idea of H in high school and the contemplation of it loomed about as a truly dark and rebellious and cool thing, like a dark cloud waiting to show us another world. It was hardcore, the real serious high. H always had an aura of something very bad but very good at the same time. It messes you up, but the high is so great it's worth it. All I'm saying is I am truly not surprised Layne got into H, and that I am glad I never went there. No high is worth fucking up your temple, that is your body.

P.S. I was listening to Alice n' Chains for years before I realized who he was. In school his last name was "Elmer". I also abandoned my shameful Lynnwood-Meadowdale roots right after graduation and spent my time traveling and then going to art school in Seattle. When my close high school friend told me who Layne was now it took a very long time to for it to sink in. All these years and I didn't even know! It was like what I'd read about Jim Morrison's parents who'd been listening to "Light my Fire" on the radio for months before realizing it was their son singing! Anyway, I was so proud of him, this kid I barely remember, I couldn't believe he'd managed to scratch out of that terrible Lynnwood loser stereotype and stay true to his dream. I'm still in awe and he has made my memories of those terrible high school 'daze' into something else entirely now. I remember the energy now around us as it truly was underneath the surface, boiling and intense, yet free .

Thanks Layne for being who you are in life and in death.

    Layne,

Yes, his name was Layne Elmer at Meadowdale. His last year there was 1985, he was a senior. I know because I had a major crush on him and I was a junior. He was shy and funny. He also worked at the town burger joint, "Burger Master". He was not appreciated at all at Meadowdale. Most of the students at Meadowdale were Ass's to him. He would wear bleached out Levis, and a long black trench coat. I thought he was hot then, but I was too shy to tell him. I wrote his mom when I found out about his death. She sent me a few pictures of herself and Layne when he was young, miraculously one of Laynes old guitar picks happened to appear in the package and I treasure it. He was quiet and shy and had the most piercing blue eyes and naturally white-blonde hair. He was in a garage band called Sleeze and he was the bass player, not lead vocals. I remember the black Levi jacket he had with the band's name hand painted on the back. All the little Jr High girls loved him and he had a following of such.

I ran into him at the Seattle Center Colliseum (now the Key Arena) in June or July of 1986 or '87 (my memory fails me sometimes, lol) At a Van Halen concert. It was before the show started, I was out near the concessions and t-shirt stands and I kept hearing someone call my name. About 50 feet away was Layne Elmer! He had his trademark bleached jeans and long leather trench coat on, long white hair and make up of that times' glam bands. I almost didn't recognize him! We hugged and he said he was in a new band called Alice in Chains and I remember thinking it was an odd and kind of stupid name for a band. Then he told me he was their singer and I should check them out. I never saw him after that - I mean close enough to talk to him.

Have Alice In Chains appeared in any movies?

Yes. You can see the band perform live in the Cameron Crowe film Singles, in which the guys play a small role as themselves. Jerry also has a small speaking role in the 1997 hit movie Jerry Maguire, starring Tom Cruise. Jerry plays the "Kinko's Copy Guy" in this film, also by Cameron Crowe.

Jerry在Tom Cruise主演的电影Jerry Maguire里,扮演了一个复印东西的小配角,台词只有一句:‘That's how you become great, man. Hang your balls out there! ...’

    Did Layne take voice lessons?

Nope. In a former band, it has been said that the other band members couldn't get Layne to stop singing. However, he never had any formal training. Nevertheless, Susan Carr apparently has a web page where she claims to have given lessons to Chris Cornell (Soundgarden) and Layne Staley.

    Possible future album

As of September 2010, according to DuVall, Alice in Chains has not begun writing their next album yet, but "there's plenty of riffs flying around." He added, "That was the case when we first started back up. We would just stockpile these fragments, and then some time later we would sift through the mountain of stuff, and that's what became Black Gives Way to Blue. The same thing has been happening since we've been touring Black Gives Way to Blue, so it would be only natural to at some point say, 'Hey, we've got a lot of stuff. Let's sift through and see what we've got this time.'" DuVall also mentioned that it is possible that the new album will feature songs that were written for Black Gives Way to Blue.

Since then, the band has announced that they will begin recording a new album at the tail end of 2011.

Black Gives Way to Blue(《黑不胜蓝》)就是这样完成的。

Mike got into music at a young age. He did not start out playing the bass, though. He first played the guitar. He plays the bass now because, simply, the band he was in needed a bassist. (He still plays a little guitar, though.Mike still plays a little guitar, and he has an associate's degree in music, for saxophone and keyboard. Other than music, his main interest is scuba diving. In 1989,when Ozzy Osbourne announced that he needed a new bassplayer, Mike was one of the many hopeful young men who found their way to Frank Zappa's place in LA, called "Joe's Garage", where Ozzy held his audition. "There must've been 50 bass players there, all in leathers and with the boots and stuff. I was in Levi's' and an old hockey jersey..." remembers Mike. He wasn't nervous though, he didn't think he'd get the gig. Some three weeks later the results from the final elimination came: "Quit your job, you're going to Ireland and then playing London's Wembley Arena in a few weeks! Learn 20 songs and here's your flight information". That was the first time Mike had left the country.

The recording of Dirt began in the spring of 1992. Producer Dave Jerden, who had previously worked with the band on their debut, Facelift, wanted to work with them again. He admired vocalist Layne Staley's lyrics and voice, and lead guitarist Jerry Cantrell's guitar riffs. For the songs "Them Bones", "Rain When I Die," "Down in a Hole", "Dirt," and "Would?", Cantrell brought in his black Gibson Les Paul and an amplifier he had bought when he was seventeen which had much heavier distortion than any amplifier he had used in the past. Dirt was recorded at Eldorado Recording Studio in Burbank, California, London Bridge Studio in Seattle, and One on One Studios in Los Angeles from March to May 1992.

When recording the album, Staley had previously checked out of rehab in Portland, Oregon and quickly went back to using heroin. Drummer Sean Kinney claimed in a 2005 interview that Staley had told Kinney that he was extremely high on heroin and marijuana during the recordings of "Down in a Hole" and "Angry Chair" as well as taking Oxycodone for back pain. Cantrell had also agreed with Kinney's report, saying that Staley, Jerden and the rest of the band would smoke marijuana in the studio room, even saying that Staley would shoot heroin in front of everyone. Jerden later said that he was told Staley felt animosity toward him dating back to the Dirt sessions due to Jerden repeatedly recommending to Staley that he get sober at the time. Jerden said, "Apparently he got all mad at me [during the Dirt sessions]...And what's my job as a producer? To produce a record. I'm not getting paid to be Layne's friend."

Staley was not the only one who went through heavy drug use; Sean Kinney and bassist Mike Starr were also struggling with alcohol addiction. Cantrell was also going through severe clinical depression from the deaths of his mother and his friend, Andrew Wood, and used Xanax, an anxiety medication prescribed by his doctor to ease his depression as well as his heavy drinking on tour... "I was going through a tough time, everyone was, but that's what made the album stronger and more intense, I look back on that period of time as the longest four years of sex, drugs and alcohol we all went through," Cantrell said in a 2007 interview with The Seattle Times.

Them Bones", "Rain When I Die," "Down in a Hole", "Dirt," 和 "Would?"

Staley later expressed regret about the lyrical content of some songs on Dirt, explaining, "I wrote about drugs, and I didn't think I was being unsafe or careless by writing about them...I didn't want my fans to think that heroin was cool. But then I've had fans come up to me and give me the thumbs up, telling me they're high. That's exactly what I didn't want to happen."

The band used to call themselves "Fuck", and word says they handed out condoms to the audience with the phrase "Fuck the band" on the wrappers :)) AiC is a Seattle band and although they prefer to call themselves a plain rockband they often get the label "grungeband" right along with Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Nirvana. Even if AiC has got a great number of fans they never got a big breakthrough, like for example Metallica or Nirvana. Maybe that's good in a way, since going commercial often means that the quality of the music takes damage.

Cantrell said he wrote "Them Bones" about "mortality, that one of these days we'll end up a pile of bones.” Cantrell was inspired to write "Dam That River" after a fight he had with Kinney in which Kinney broke a coffee table over his head.” Down" was written by Cantrell to his "long-time love" and commented that "it's hard for us to both understand...that this life is not conducive to much success with long-term relationships." "Sickman" came together after Staley asked Cantrell to "write him the sickest tune, the sickest, darkest, most fucked up and heaviest thing [Cantrell] could write.” Rooster" was written by Cantrell for his father, who served in the Vietnam War. His nickname was "Rooster”. Cantrell described the song as "the start of the healing process between my Dad and I from all that damage that Vietnam caused.” Discussing the title track "Dirt", Cantrell stated that "the words Layne put to it were so heavy, I've never given him something and not thought it was gonna be the most bad-assed thing I was going to hear.” Cantrell cited "Junkhead" and "God Smack" as "the most openly honest" songs about drug use.” Iron Gland" was developed out of a guitar riff that Cantrell would play that annoyed the other band members, so he created the song (adding in a reference to Black Sabbath's "Iron Man") and promised to never play the guitar riff again. It features Tom Araya of Slayer on vocals. "Hate to Feel" and "Angry Chair" were both composed solely by Staley, and Cantrell has expressed his pride in seeing Staley grow as a songwriter and guitarist. The album's final track, "Would?", was written by Cantrell and concerns the late lead singer of Mother Love Bone, Andrew Wood Cantrell said the song is also "directed towards people who pass judgments.

Down in a Hole写的是Jerry与相处了很久的恋人的分手。

I had read it a few years earlier so we started talking about what it meant to be an artist and have a spiritual message...suffice it to say Layne Staley felt as though he was on a spiritual mission through his music. Not a rock mission, a spiritual mission."

    Barrett Martin(Screaming Trees和Mad Season的鼓手)说,“Layne给我最深刻的印象是在制作Above这张专辑的时候。

In 1993's crazy summer, Alice in Chains headlined Lollapalooza. The band performed with some of the greatest groups of the "new rock age," Primus, TOOL, Rage Against the Machine and others. Layne Staley decided hair sucked and shaved his head down to a buzz cut and wears tailored suits during the show. When Lollapalooza was finished, Alice in Chains went back to their home to find out they were evicted. It seemed that Staley thought Jerry paid the rent, while Jerry thought Mike...etc. so the band moved into London Bridge Studio. Fairly bored and a little depressed over being quasi-homeless, Alice in Chains records their third EP "Jar of Flies" in seven days.

    Who is Demri Parrott?

Demri was Layne's ex-fiancée and close friend. Demri was a very sweet, beautiful person, interested in philosophy, poetry, and art. She loved to collect vintage clothes, make decoupage, write poetry and play in front of the camera. She supposedly was the love of Layne Staley's life. They met sometime between the years 1991 and 1992. Layne and Demri were described by their friends and family as perfect for each other, however, they drifted apart sometime in 1993 or 1994. Sadly, Demri passed away on October 29th, 1996, due to an inflammation of the heart caused by an unclean needle. It was a very upsetting moment in Layne's life, but his friends and family stayed close to him and supported him through this terrible time.Demri was also an inspiration to Layne as he wrote a few songs about her. You can read her obituary as printed in a Seattle newspaper.

    Demri Parrott

Written and recorded in one week in September 1993,Jar of Flies was produced by the band members themselves, and marks the first studio recording with bassist Mike Inez. Guitarist Jerry Cantrell said, "That was the first time we'd written with Mike Inez...The whole Jar of Flies EP proved to both us and the fans what a talented and valid part of the band Mike was. He plays the nastiest, darkest shit but he's got the sweetest heart in the world."

According to Staley, the title for the album came from a science experiment Cantrell conducted in third grade: "They gave him two jars full of flies. One of the jars they overfed the other jar they underfed. The one they overfed flourished for a while, then all the flies died from overpopulation. The one they underfed had most of the flies survive all year. I guess there's a message in there somewhere. Evidently that experiment had a big impact on Jerry."

Layne was okay until the last night of the tour. Personally, I have no idea exactly what happened, but I got a lot of stories. Layne was always really quiet about it. One of his more moronic friends told me that he had actually died, but what little I did get from Layne told me this wasn't true. He always kept saying that he had "slipped." Most of what everyone heard then was nonsense. I know he did get an infection because of his very, very stupid way of not looking after things. He became sort of ashamed and let it go longer than he should have. That's where all the "gangrene" rumors started. He went into rehab after that. Then there was some stuff with his mother that I just can't share here. Suffice to say that she got the wrong ideas about some things, Layne was hurt by her assumptions and they parted ways for a while. I understand that Jerry started doing cocaine again around this time. Mind, I never knew him entirely well and I never saw him do it, but it's what people were saying. Layne was trying to quit EVERYthing at this time (he even attempted quitting smoking) and Sean was still bringing pot around everytime they would get together. Jerry started to stay away from Layne though. By '96 or so, Jerry was fed up with Layne's fear of touring. Layne had admitted that he was mostly finished with show business. From then on, he said, he just wanted to do art and make music for his friends. Jerry loved the rock star lifestyle and didn't want to give it up and he was pissed at Layne. But he never said so outright. Jerry would make these stupid, hazily spiteful remarks like "we're standing by Layne" and "I love him anyway." Who wants to be loved "anyway?" And the thing was that Layne was really bouncing back at this time. In spite of all the rumors he WAS clean. He was getting more and more into one of his favorite hobbies too, which was anime (which he helped get me into. Thank you again, Layne. :D ) His anime of choice back then was Vampire Princess Miyu. Late '96, Demri started backsliding and this was around when I finally met her. Now whether or not Layne ever knew just how much I liked him, I don't know, but Demri knew. We got along at first. Demri was sweet and helpful and fun. Then she moved in with Layne because she had nowhere else to go. They weren't dating at the time, just sharing the apartment. Layne had told her that if she started using drugs again he'd have to make her leave. But Demri did start using drugs again, and instead of asking her to leave, because then she would really be in trouble, Layne took a hike. I don't know where he went though, and even the people who he rented from thought he was still living there. He just didn't tell anyone that he was leaving.

他越来越痴迷最爱的动漫游戏anime(受他影响我也喜欢玩了,谢谢你Layne),选择的角色是吸血鬼公主美优。

Demri made a mess of the house and the living situation in Layne's absence. She turned really different, and believe me when I say that she was not truly the person that she was becoming. When she was herself she was a very sensitive and fun girl. Around October 20th or so she made some phone calls and wrote some letters to some people. Sparing the details, I ended up having a stupid fight with her about Layne. I was somewhat envious of her because Layne always seemed to forgive her each time, and there is something TO that, but at the same time I felt I was right; she was making a mess of things and she was in big trouble. She said something to me, I said something back, and that was it. When I spoke to Layne I was pissed off and crying, and told him what was going on at the house, but he pretty much already knew. That's when he came back and Demri left. Demri died on Oct. 29th of '96 of a heroin overdose. She was made weaker by the fact that she'd contracted heart problems from the use of dirty and used cotton when she used heroin. At 26 she was wearing a pacemaker. I remember a few months after she got the pacemaker that certain "friends" of Layne's were blaming her illness on him. Why? Because she'd been staying at his apartment at the time that she got sick (when he had gone on tour,) and according to them, he hadn't thought to leave her enough money to buy new bags of cotton for, what, ninety nine cents? Just how much sense does that make? She had her own connections for buying heroin and she could afford that, but it was LAYNE'S fault that she got sick b/c he hadn't bought her cotton before he left. This is the kind of ridiculous talk he put up with from people who claimed to like him. RIght before Demri died she had been about to move to Hawai'i with her father (or stepfather, I forget which.) She was also seeing this new guy that her family hadn't met. He was a coke dealer. She went out one night with the new bf of hers and she had shot heroin before they left. They went down to QFC and he asked her to wait in the car while he ran into the store to buy a few things. When he came out, he assumed that she was asleep. He drove around town for a while after that not even aware that Demri was dying in the passenger seat. By the time he tried to wake her she was in a coma. That was the night of the 28th. Demri didn't die till the morning of the 29th, in her mother's arms at the hospital. I think that Layne always sort of blamed himself for not looking after her, because she did need looking after. Nice she was, but not very independent. Demri never grew up. I have some copies of her poetry. She once called herself "an alien waiting for a ride home."

Around '97, Layne had moved to the U Dist. He hardly ever saw Jerry anymore, but Mike Inez was still kind of close with him. As for Mike Starr, if you're wondering, he was living in a crappy old apartment (same building that I used to live in,) with his father. One night he and his father were shooting heroin together and his father OD'ed. He lived through it, but they were kicked out of the apartment. Gah, Mike Starr was a weird one. I never met him, but that's according to people who did. (At the time, Layne didn't know what happened with MS. I'd heard it from one of the people I knew who also lived there.) Jerry was totally dogging out then. He seemed to think that because he never shot heroin he was better than Layne. Jerry did do some heroin but he was all about coke, girls, money and fame. I started to dislike him then. You know what he was like? He was like Layne's pimp, only he couldn't get Layne to work. Layne was tired of it and didn't want to do it anymore, and Jerry became very devious in his words and his actions. He's a different person on coke. He walks around flipping his hair and trying to hump everything he thinks might have a vagina. He's got this "I'm Jerry Cantrell and you're not" sort of attitude. He started doing this whole big martyred thing in the press - "I'm standing by Layne, even though it's making me sufferrrrrrr!" but in private he was slipping the knife in. God. Just thinking about it. >:( Around '98, Mark Lanegan was living with Layne. Mark and Layne were really cool together. Lanegan was struggling to quit heroin and I would swear to this day that he's here because of Layne. Layne helped him a lot in a lot of ways. He was always fighting someone else's battle when he thought he had his beat. Lanegan was really sick for a while and Layne was like a Florence Nightingale. Oh lord, the jokes... ;D They would go out together and a lot of people thought they were gay. Which didn't bother them though because they took it like one big joke. "Yeah we're gay, wanna join us?" LOL! I just don't know what happened after '98 - '99. Things were mellow, Layne was doing really well. He had his cats and a nice place to live and his art and his hobbies. I know that he was at Jerry's '98 Halloween concert, and had thought about making an appearance there. He was dressed as a monster that night and no one recognized him. I don't know what happened after '99. I left Seattle because I was very stupidly stuck on Layne and I knew that probably nothing was going to come of it. I looked a little bit like Demri back then and I always had the feeling that Layne was a little weirded out by that. He only ever made one reference to the fact though, and that was after she was gone. I moved thousands of miles away, he changed his email address and, though we spoke on the phone a few times since then it was only about little things. During this year I hadn't heard a thing. But then I was never much more than a witness. For Layne to die was just sad and wrong, but for him to die alone was just an abomination. By blaming Jerry and the rest of Layne's "friends" I also have to blame myself for moving so far away and losing touch. On the other hand I also don't flatter myself that I could have done something for him; I just don't know if I was that important. But I will say this: Jerry saw this coming. Now you may say that he was just fed up with waiting for Layne to find solid ground once and for all, and I could totally understand that, but you'd be missing the point. Jerry's almost entirely about money, or at least he was 3 years ago. I'm sure that he's sad, I'm sure he feels it. But god, if he isn't just a little gratified also. Jerry always had this "I told you so" thing going on. When Layne would relapse or even admit to weakness in the last few years that I knew them Jerry would get very patronizing and very smug. I'm sorry, but I just can't stand the man. I hate the way he made people feel, so worthless and small. I remember looking out your window at the docks one time while you were on the computer, and I was making you listen to some stupid old song because I thought it was cool. You were making fun of it and you crooned the line "you are so superduper bravissimo" to me like the big goofball that you were. Layne, I was yours for the asking, but you never asked. I love you still, sweetheart, and I'm so sorry. Always, your brave Koa

你拿它们取乐,装疯卖傻的低声对我唱"you are so superduper bravissimo"。

Mere days before the tour began, Layne Staley broke his foot in an ATV accident, forcing him to use crutches on stage. While on tour, Starr was kicked out of the band and was replaced by former Ozzy Osbourne bassist Mike Inez.During the summer of 1993, Alice in Chains joined Primus, Tool, Rage Against the Machine, and Babes in Toyland for the alternative music festival Lollapalooza, which was the last major tour Alice in Chains played with Staley.

Was Jerry really sick for the Unplugged show?

Indeed. Cantrell mentioned in an interview that he got food poisoning from a hot dog. He had to leave the stage a couple of times during the performance. The same thing happened at Lollapalooza 93, in Washington. From Guitar School, August 1996: "I was ill that whole week. I got food poisoning from a hot dog I bought from a street vendor -- bad move. I was puking right up until the gig and immediately afterward, but while I was playing I felt fine.

Following the tour for Facelift, Alice in Chains entered the studio to record demos for its next album, but ended up recording five acoustic songs instead. While in the studio, drummer Sean Kinney had a dream about "making an EP called Sap."The band decided "not to mess with fate", and Sap was recorded in 1991 with producer Rick Parashar.

The EP features guest vocals by Ann Wilson from the band Heart, who joined vocalist Layne Staley and guitarist Jerry Cantrell for the choruses of "Brother" and "Am I Inside". The EP also features Mark Arm of Mudhoney and Chris Cornell of Soundgarden, who appeared together on the song "Right Turn", credited to "Alice Mudgarden" in the liner notes. The song was featured in the 2001 film Black Hawk Down.

Mark Arm(Mudhoney )和Chris Cornell (Soundgarden)为 歌曲Right Turn献声,内页中歌手名显示为Alice Mudgarden。

Regarding the lyrical content, Cantrell said he wrote "Brother" about his relationship with his younger brother. The song specifically refers to the time period after Cantrell's parents divorced when his younger brother went off to live with his father while he stayed with his mother, and Cantrell said that the song "was a way of trying to build a bridge." Commenting on "Got Me Wrong", Cantrell said he wrote the song about a relationship where one person thinks he or she can change the other person, and added that the song speaks of "the different ways that men and women see each other."

    Alice in Metal-Land

    by Layne Staley

I started out when I was about 12, playing drums. My dad's friend had a drum set, and every time I went over there, I was attracted to it. I'd been listening to rock 'n' roll since I could remember - reading the magazines. It just seemed like a glamorous life, and I wanted to be a part of it. I started singing when I was about 15. I'd been playing drums in a band in this band with some friends from my high school, and the singer was terrible. I wanted to sing backup on a song, and he said, "You play drums; you can't sing." I got pissed off and sold my drum set. I actually traded it for a delay and a microphone. I plugged it into my stereo at home and just started singing to tapes - Black Sabbath and whatever else.

I have two sisters, a brother, and my parents. They weren't very musical. My mom kind of was. She used to sing. I'd say my first influence would be Black Sabbath, then Ozzy, then Ian Gillan with Deep Purple and Black Sabbath. The first record I ever picked up was Black Sabbath. It was either my mom's or my dad's album! I just picked it out of their collection.

I was in a band before, when I was 15, for two years. We were a glam band. Then I couldn't afford to buy makeup. At the time that was the thing. Poison had just come out, and a lot of bands like that were coming out. I was kind of into that. It originally started out with me and a bunch of friends. It was a glam band that played Slayer and Armoured Saint covers, kind of a glam/thrash band. Now most of the bands I listen to are from Seattle or the old stuff. I like a lot of different stuff - Ministry, Lords of the New Church, Skinny Puppy.

As far as the Seattle scene, there's always been great bands - great metal bands, great alternative bands - as long as I can remember. The reason being is that I don't think people are too worried about who they impress, really. Everyone just likes to play music. They don't do it with a gimmick. Other places, where there's so many bands to compete with, sometimes you have to have a gimmick to outdo the other bands. It's not like that in Seattle. There are not as many bands as there are in L.A. or New York. It's a lot smaller. There's a big difference. A lot of power-pop comes out of L.A., a lot of speed metal comes out of New York, and then a lot of the stuff we're doing is coming out of Seattle.

There were a lot of drugs. We kinda just passed the time that way. For a couple of years we were all doin' anything we could get our hands on. I think we just got tired of living like that. Andrew Wood's death changed things, maybe, for a few weeks. I probably got even heavier into drugs after that happened.

One of the first bands to break out of Seattle was Heart. After Heart I'd say Queensryche. Then probably Soundgarden. Mother Love Bone pretty much broke the ice in this genre, I guess. We played the Seattle scene for a couple years. There's three placed to play, and we just kind of played 'em each a couple of times a month. We did that for two years, played these three bars over and over and over.

It wasn't competitive at all. We all (Nirvana, Soundgarden, Mother Love Bone, etc...) went and saw each other's bands and jammed together. It's just that type of scene; it's more supportive. All the bands come out to see all the other bands. We're all friends, so there's really no need for competition. Everyone has their own sound and their own style, so there's really not anything to compete with. 。

I think we've been successful because people are starting to accept this style of music. A lot of bands broke the ice - Faith No More, Jane's Addiction. It's not grunge, it's just not your typical band - eight rock songs, two ballad albums. There's a lot of experimentation, doing different stuff and not really worrying about sticking to one theme or one way of writing. I'm more concerned with writing good music and putting out good music.

I don't really like doing videos, but you kind of have to today. We really like the finished products, we just don't like the making of the video - singing the same song over and over and over for 24 hours. It's cool to be able to take some of our ideas - how we picture the song to be portrayed in the video - and see that come through. That's what's cool.

We've been out on tour in support of Facelift for 17 months. At this point we're exhausted. We're all pretty tired. The road's very grueling. It's not what I thought it was. Well, actually, it is what I thought it was going to be, but I just don't take part in it the way I used to - the bimbos, the free beers, free drugs, and all that. That's still there if you want it, but I don't really seek that out anymore. I concentrate on singing the songs, then I don't do much else but stay in my hotel room.

Originally with Facelift, I figured we could sell 100 000 albums. That was pretty much our goal. We thought that would be pretty cool. Maybe 200 000. We didn't think it would sell as well as it did.

We're getting ready to do our second album, and we're looking at some studios in California. Not in Los Angeles. I don't like that town. Too decadent, and it's slimy. I kinda attract people that I don't want to attract - drug fiends, scenesters - and it freaks me out. We're thinking of somewhere in Sausalito.

We recorded the EP - it's called Sap - in two days. Four songs. It'll be released about the time we'll be going into the studio. It's lighter material. It was actually a dream that Sean, our drummer, had that we did this EP of mellow acoustic songs and called it Sap. He woke up, told us what he dreamed, and we said it sounded like a good idea.

Ministry, Lords of the New Church, Skinny Puppy都听。

我们(Nirvana, Soundgarden, Mother Love Bone, etc...)

Faith No More, Jane's Addiction。

Cantrell says he'll choose to remember his late friend from an act of generosity in his pre-addiction days. In 1990, Cantrell and Staley visited New York and were put up in a ritzy hotel by their record company. That night Staley befriended two homeless men. "It was Layne's idea to invite them up to the room," Cantrell says. "We fed them room service and sat up and talked to them all night. That was the kind of guy Layne was - a guy with a huge fucking heart."

The first time he mentioned this was during an interview for Playboy. It wasn't in the magazine but in a video online. He told the girl who was interviewing him that he was at the Moore Theater show and he wished he was on stage and was feeling jealous. He also told her he had never talked about that before.

In the spring or fall of 1984, James Bergstrom, the drummer in a garage band called Sleze, was walking between classes at suburban Seattle's Shorewood High School when he ran into Ken Elmer, a friend from the school marching band. Elmer knew that Bergstrom and his band mates were looking for a singer, and he had somebody in mind for them.

"Hey, my stepbrother Layne plays drums but he wants to be a singer," Elmer told Bergstrom. "You should give him a call." Bergstrom agreed, and an audition was eventually set up.

The tryout took place at Bergstrom's parents' house, where Sleze had their jam room set up in the basement. They were young—still in early high school and still learning how to play their instruments and perform covers. Layne eventually arrived. Before playing together, the band members noticed his tall stature, soft-spoken demeanor, and that he was very much dressed for the part of a rock musician, with band names like "Ozzy" or "Mötley Crüe" written on his pants in bleach. "He came to our jam room and was really shy, real timid," guitarist Johnny Bacolas says. "And just as we expected, we were like, 'Fuck, yeah! This is what a lead singer should look like!'" After initial introductions were made, the group started jamming. Bergstrom, guitarists Johnny Bacolas and Ed Semanate, and bassist Byron Hansen are all fairly certain that the first song they performed with Layne was a cover of Mötley Crüe's "Looks That Kill." They immediately knew they were onto something.
