    Ladies and Gentlemen

We gather, to day, to celebrate the hundredth anniversary of Olivier Messiaen’s birth, with the helpful grace of two talented young musicians. Soprano Qiu shuwei from Shanghai and pianist Tatiana Goncharova from New York.

Born in 1908, deceased in 1992, Olivier Messiaen is already considered as a « classic » musician. At age 11, enters in the Paris Conservatory of music, Messiaen is revealed to Music through his admiration of Debussy’s work. Messiaen becomes soon a curious mind as well as an eclectic musician, studying gregorian, indi music, birds songs, greek music…

His first opus « The celestial banquet » in 1928, aged 20 only, reveals Messiaen to the public. He became principal organist in the Trinity church in Paris, showing a considerable talent for improvisation.

As a unique and somewhat controversial personality, Messiaen depicts his inspiration as driven by his own« emotional Trinity : Nature, Faith and Music ». Most of his creations follow these three sources, as you will hear to day.

Celebrating this anniversary, here, in the United States is a recognition of his first visit here, in 1947. His famous Turangilala Symphony was played later in 1948 in Boston, under the famous conductor Leonard Bernstein. 22 years later, when visiting the region of Utah, Messiaen was so impressed by such beauty that it became a source of his major symphonies. The « Mount Messiaen », in Utah, is the most beautiful and natural hommage expressed to a multi faceted and talented musician.

Now , let’s listen Qiu Shuwei, accompanied by Tatiana Goncharova, singing the Three Melodies writen and composed when he was 22. It is noteworthy that Messiaen wrote and composed all his pieces such as « Why », « The lost fiancee » and « Smile ». The latter is an exception since written by his poetress mother, Cecile Sauvage.

Harawi, writen and composed by Messiaen, that we are going to listen, is a peculiar piece from Messiaen. Created in 1945, Harawi differs from other pieces, being largely influenced by peruvian music, full with humanism and hommage to nature and folklore.

We have selected, within Harawi, three other major songs, « Piroutcha love », « Farewell » «and « Stars birds » that our two talented musicians are going to offer us.
