困扰多年的o henry 的问题

A Cosmopolite in a Cafe里的这个故事很多年都没看明白： ----------------------- I knew a New Yorker who was kidnapped for ransom by some Afghanistan bandits. His people sent over the money and he came back to Kabul with the agent. 'Afghanistan?' the natives said to him through an interpreter. 'Well, not so slow, do you think?' 'Oh, I don't know,' says he, and he begins to tell them about a cab driver at Sixth avenue and Broadway. --------------------- natives为什么要跟他说‘afghanistan'？and 他回答'not so slow'又是指的什么？？或者这个‘not so slow'到底是newyorker还是翻译还是native接着说的？ 哪位可以解惑一下？
