《DREAMTIME RETURN》第2,《STRUCTURES FROM SILENCE》第4。 与Robert Rich一道, Roach为Hearts of Space录制了两张经典专辑《STRATA》和《SOMA》,前者进入Billboard的New Age榜TOP 10并让他入选了当年度TOP 10的艺术家,后者在《Downbeat》杂志拿到4星,按照杂志的说法,聆听Steve Roach的音乐的音乐就像“a reliable musical muse into a dark, hypnotic realm that wafts of mysticism instead of marketing(跟着可靠的缪斯进入一个漂浮着神秘主义色彩的黑,暗的,催眠一般领域)”。 Roach与比利时黑氛围音乐家Vidna Obmana有过很长一段时间的密切合作,唱片《WELL OF SOULS》按照的Detroit Metro Times中说法,“an unequaled achievement, and nothing in ambient or space music can be compared to it(一个无可比拟的成功,没有任何ambient或space music能与之比较)”。 诗人兼记者Thom Jurek描述这张专辑,“an entirely new path of musical exploration; it is a benchmark for an already prodigious and celebrated career... younger innovators in the techno and ambient worlds revere Roach's contributions and are amazed at his ability to stay years ahead of the curve. With THE MAGNIFICENT VOID, Roach ups the ante once again(一个全新的音乐探索,建立在巨大成功的基础上的新标准,techno和ambient音乐的后辈们将对Roach的贡献尊敬,同时惊奇于他的才能使他保持在the curve的前方数年,《THE MAGNIFICENT VOID》让Roach有了一个新的开端)”。《Wired》的Alan E. Rapp进一步指出,“Roach gives us not new music, but new ears with which to hear(Roach给我们的不是新音乐,而是新的听音乐的新方式)”。Detroit Metro Times的Chris Meloche感觉听这个专辑“like watching the clouds roll across the sky, except you're doing it while lying at the bottom of a swimming pool(像躺在游泳池底看着云朵儿穿过天空)”。Tucson的Daniel Buckley认为,“resembles after-tones of the big bang, as matter is sent chaotically writhing through the expanses of space(类似物质在广阔的空间里翻腾穿梭的宇宙大爆炸之后)”。《Option》的Bill Tilland称听到了“the rush of subterranean magma, the slow grinding of tectonic plates, and the natural resonance of massive granite boulders(地底岩浆的奔腾,大陆板块之间的缓慢碾磨,魁伟的花岗岩石的自然共振)”。 1998年,Roach开始运作自己的厂牌Timeroom Editions,2001年发行《CORE》,Roach自己给出的标签是“molten blast of pure energy and impulsive forms with a feeling of unwinding the source directly off the spool, uninterrupted”。2002年发行《ALL IS NOW》,被公认为是他目前最好的现场专辑,双cd。 2001年发行了地位举足轻重的《EARLY MAN》,《Pulse》杂志的John Diliberto描述为“a hole ripped in time immersing you in the deep(一个时间裂开的洞,将你深深地吸入)”。Roach自己描述为“I set out to capture the textures, sounds, climate and movement of a day in the life of a distant relative(我决定捕捉住那种早期人类时代的质感,声响,气候和遥方生活的运作方式)”。 作为电子,氛围音乐的艺术家中的基柱之一,Steve Roach 30年如一日的不断探索和打破原有框架,使得他的音乐可以超出风格间的阻碍,国家间的分界,文明间的隔阂,甚至是时间本身 (Lur整理翻译自steveroach.com) 1984 Structures From Silence http://www.namipan.com/d/fb33487ad61deeadb03addd592e19423475ef877f5166a08 While the term "classic" is used freely these days, since its release in 1984 STRUCTURES FROM SILENCE has earned its "classic" status. The breathing suspended embrace of rhythmless, cloud-like atmospheres and serene melodies introduced a new sound for its time. Generating an abundance of listener feedback via cards and letters long before the dawn of e-mail, STRUCTURES FROM SILENCE is a breakthrough release that serves as a living example of the true healing quality that music can hold. Now for 2001, this new edition provides the chance to rediscover this timeless music as well as introduce the music to a new audience. The CD was recently listed in Yoga Journal as one of the all-time top 10 CD's for the Movement and Meditation process. 1986 Quiet Music 1 http://www.namipan.com/d/b0c18d83b24838f525842bf17f30a11b8d85120c2045960a Now after years of requests, the remaining cassette-only releases of QUIET MUSIC have been collected and remastered on CD to join the original single CD first released in 1988. These recordings from the early 80's were originally commissioned for several healing arts programs. The early strands of Steve's synthesizer paintings are joined with melodic flute and sounds from the high desert blended in an understated serene atmosphere. The pure peaceful, non-threatening nature of this music was soon discovered for use in meditation, birthing and Hospice programs and continues to find its use in this way today. This early chapter in Ambient Music is presented as a double CD on Fortuna Records. Disc One is the original QUIET MUSIC CD with the sand dunes cover. Disc Two is side one of the QUIET MUSIC 1 cassette, side two of the QUIET MUSIC 3 cassette and a shorter piece that ended the original QUIET MUSIC 3. Empetus http://www.namipan.com/d/2edb04eea2694db4aff1b64dc0dc96df6aed0ae96d356c06 The rights to Steve's 1986 release Empetus reverted back to him, and this along with some recently discovered "lost pieces" inspired a 2-CD Collector's Edition. The second disc, "The Early Years", features two amazing long-form sequencer pieces circa 1982. The first piece, "Harmonia Mundi" was recorded live in the L.A.-based Timeroom with Swiss-born electronic musician Thomas Ronkin. At 45 minutes, this is one of the more possessed and intense analog sequencer trance pieces you're likely to hear. "Release" is a 24-minute solo statement of emotion and energy connected to the early years of Steve's evolution in sound, harkening to NOW and TRAVELER. By the time Empetus was released, the approach of these longer German School styles were morphing into a new sound heard on Empetus and beyond. Full blown sequencer-based music illustrating a further evolution in the visceral side of Roach's music. Nine precise pieces that still sound fresh today. A favorite of sequencer music lovers. "Released in 1986, this recording of intricately-woven sequencer lines and buzzing synthesizers established Roach as the American answer to the pioneering European electronic masters of the '70s (Klaus Schulze, Tangerine Dream). Alternately thrilling and serene (sometimes within the space of the same track), EMPETUS' waves of energy rest upon labyrinthine patterns of interlocking notes and wildly cascading tonal clusters. Roach varies the moods from piece to piece as well: the bright, piercing electronics of ''Seeking'' contrast vividly with the starker, sweeping veils of sequenced notes and arcing waves of ''Empowerment'' or the turbo-charged synths that rev through ''Conquest''. It's all riveting, exciting stuff, and although Roach largely abandoned the style as he moved forward, EMPETUS remains an important, if largely unsung, statement documenting the course of modern American electronic music." -- Darren Bergstein, Muze Quiet Music 2 http://www.namipan.com/d/1fdab35ba02ee5d4382e892ff87607b3e0556038b85a180a Now after years of requests, the remaining cassette-only releases of QUIET MUSIC have been collected and remastered on CD to join the original single CD first released in 1988. 1987 Western Spaces http://www.namipan.com/d/1c384f1dac3be1a728179e1fb7e3c4096a4e485e53753907 This recording conjures up the desert vistas and the vast stark beauty of the American southwest through a collection of pieces that play like a soundtrack to a road trip through the Mojave Desert, Death Valley and Joshua Tree, California. All of these locales were the inspiration for the musicians during the creation of the music. Another important step into the western electronic sound forged by Steve over the past dozen years. "Easily among the finest electronic albums of the last decade." -- 5 stars -- ("Q" magazine UK Feb. '91) 1988 Dreamtime Return http://www.namipan.com/d/ceb816d5432ba6c333cb451f8e020c337fa2acef2356350b Since its release in 1988, DREAMTIME RETURN has earned its reputation as a genuine classic. The two-CD Magnum Opus is perhaps the most important, widely known and highly respected release in Steve Roach's vast body of work. it serves as an essential benchmark within the Ambient-Ethno-Atmospheric genre. DREAMTIME RETURN still sounds like a transmission from the near future and the very distant past. Roach's travels in the Australian outback, along with studies of the Aboriginal Dreamtime, and his desert walkabouts in California were the lifeblood for this recording which still defies the boundaries of genre classification 17 years after its release... This 2005 edition has been lovingly remastered using a 24-bit process, and sounds better than ever. It also features never-before seen photos from Steve's Australian adventure during the making of this recording. "Steve Roach demonstrates that electronic music's greatest potential may lie in bringing our most elusive dreams and ancient memories into focus through potent, highly imaginative soundscapes. This is without question Steve Roach's masterpiece." -- 10-10 rating, CD Review "Musically DREAMTIME RETURN richly deserves its classic status, but Roach also deserves credit for leading electronic musicians out of their sheltered studios and into an active relationship with the landscape, the wider world, and deep cultural history. The whole genre is stronger and more relevant for his example." -- Stephen Hill, Hearts of Space Stormwarning http://www.namipan.com/d/30256abf2f3ef15d551ad8641ff6848e5a9e41d192720e07 STORMWARNING takes you to the outer edges of Steve Roach's music where he engages in a driving high-energy sound first explored on albums EMPETUS, and NOW / TRAVELER. In the live performances of STORMWARNING, Roach unlocks the synchronous perfection of sequencers, creating elaborate, interlocking patterns that weave into infinite, Escher-like designs, set against Roach's skyscraping synthesizer fury. STORMWARNING has been brought back to life as a release on Steve's Timeroom Collector Series. Since the original was only 51 minutes long, "Day Three", a 21 minute sequencer piece of epic proportions has been added. This piece was recorded on Steve's first tour of Germany, and definitely feels like a missing piece to the puzzle in terms of its musical content and energy. Those who love the high-energy dramatic sequencer era of Steve's work will love this rare piece recorded in the land of its stylistic origin. 24-bit remastered and over 70 minutes total playing time. Desert Solitaire http://www.namipan.com/d/631d607b47b13348ef09ec5a7c443e18e38247d8c098b604 The follow-up to WESTERN SPACES, this time with Michael Stearns. The intensity of the desert's elemental power and allure are brought into focus on this collection of evocative sound paintings. Intense heat and thunder storms, craggy desert mountains, vast labyrinth-like canyons are at the center of this remarkable portrait of the American Southwest, one that the late writer Ed Abby wrote about so potently in the book Desert Solitaire from which the title was borrowed. Electronic and acoustic lines start to blur. Steve and Robert bring the best out of each other's talents on this important collaboration. Ethnic and electronic drums, flutes and expansive atmospheres of searing beauty only start to describe this music Australia: Sound of the Earth http://www.namipan.com/d/07d4f7b39246d2e37624ff04b815b578602c19f3fdf74c05 Roach's second trip to Australia was documented by yet another breakthrough release that was celebrated in Australia with high critical regard. David Hudson's didgeridoo and cellist Sarah Hopkins are featured in this sonic travelogue down under. "It is somewhat ironic that one of the best Western-Aboriginal fusions has been the work of the highly regarded American ambient musician, Steve Roach." -- (Sydney Morning Herald) "The album breathes heat, the scorching breath of that red and rainless land. It's built on a bedrock of unearthly ambience, the kind of night bush sounds that would make even the most fearless and skeptical travelers move closer to the fire". -- (Sonics, Australia) 1992 World's Edge http://www.namipan.com/d/b96363fe37cecf2771777d8ee0c0db872fcb62e8068b4408 The double-CD WORLD'S EDGE was Steve's first solo project created after his move to Tucson in 1990. At last the inspirations that fueled his music for years were right outside the studio, helping to feed an especially intense creative period. It is one that Steve looks back on as an important period of transition and discovery within the onion-skin-like evolution of his work. The roots of ORIGINS, ARTIFACTS, THE MAGNIFICENT VOID, and ON THIS PLANET are clearly present here, as well as the transition from the benchmark DREAMTIME RETURN. Disc two contains an often-overlooked hour-long piece, "To the Threshold Of Silence." This composition shows significant influences from Tibetan ceremonial music, with a fusion of deep space music, melding perfectly into Steve's landscapes of time-stretching textures. Added to this foundation is harmonic singing, processed gongs, Tibetan bells, and deep Earth pulses, all combined to created a kind of ancient-modern sacred space. This groundbreaking long-form piece foreshadowed THE DREAM CIRCLE, SLOW HEAT, ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS and PRAYERS TO THE PROTECTOR. This rediscovery will delight both old listeners and those newly-experiencing Steve's vast musical journey. European influenced sequencer music (i.e. Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze) is balanced with early tribal-atmospheric pieces that suggested what was to come. The evolution of "somadelic" music continues at a high level. It's all here, tribal grooves, organic sound-worlds, rich harmonic formations and breathy melodic flutes blend effortlessly. Numerous highest-rated reviews and top 10 best-of lists for 1992. Steve's various styles from that time are presented here in a way that flows effortlessly from one space to the next. Another good introduction to Steve's music. Ritual Ground http://www.namipan.com/d/abcff37925e4d5fe0726b23dc74d76505e0155c3fc63df04 RITUAL GROUND is a spontaneous sonic combustion, rich in cinematic overtones, deep atmospheres and tribal-electronic grooves. Previously available for a short time on San Francisco's now defunct Silent label -- and featured in the musical score of the Michael Mann film, Heat RITUAL GROUND is a lost classic tribal-ambient gem, back in print at last. Steve Roach's musical explorations have taken him into many different realms, always touching a primal nerve and evoking brilliant mindscapes for the listener. A respected and much followed solo artist, Roach has also embarked on many collaborations in which the interplay between musicians nourishes the creative process. RITUAL GROUND is the result of one of those instrumental partnerships. In 1993, Roach went to Europe for his first series of concerts outside the United States. While there, he met German synthesizer artist Elmar Schulte, whose own work has appeared on several different European labels. Spurred by their mutual desire to create new, tribal music, Roach and Schulte immediately booked studio time, recording together under the name Solitaire. The result of their intensive meeting of musical minds was this album. Forgotten Gods http://www.namipan.com/d/f8ed3c6e3eaede5984b202613f2a19ae45762805910c2909 The music rises up from the darkness and howls at the moon. An ancient voice chants in serpentine ecstacy, only to subside and hover next to silence. In those moments when the sound dissolves beyond recognition, the subconscious leaks through, whispering of faded visions painted on stone, of memories suspended by the passage of time, of gods long forgotten. This is the world where Steve Roach, Jorge Reyes and Suso Saiz create their music. There are no scores, no plans, in the initial stages of composition. Like jazz artists who extemporize freely through a shared musical language, the members of Suspended Memories connect on an intuitive level of pure sound. But it isn't jazz they're playing. Roach, Reyes, and Saiz practice a form of collective improvisation from another time, another place, maybe one that never really existed before, except in the shrouded landscapes of a shaman's dream. Primordial shamanic electronic music at its most powerful. Steve's didgeridoo playing is woven throughout. Jorge Reyes appears as guest, and the hybrid trance grooves find a new level of potency infused by surreal soundworlds dripping with primordial sweat. Incredible liner note story by Linda Kohanov helps to set the mood. Perfect music to shake the primordial cage door loose and run outside. Recorded between concert dates in Spain and Germany. This recording presents a more complex and layered sound due to the studio conditions the group found themselves in. A "Next World" sound is further explored. Prehispanic and Mexican shamanic influences merge with more urgent rhythms while the guitar and synths create the expansive fabric on which it all sits. Winner of the NAIRD Independent Release of the Year, 1993. Recently unearthed: seven artifacts, 77 minutes, and several thousand years old, from now. This is at the deep core of Roach's Tribal-Ambient phase. "Immerse yourself in its throbbing rhythms, riding on the electro-acoustic textures he renders in organic manipulations... probing the netherside... more searing than soothing." Not for the weak at heart. The four directions provide a symbolic symmetry to this extraordinary recording. A dark and inviting descent through textures that swirl and drift like liquid smoke while ethno-electronic grooves throb with primal urges. This double CD presents a "day" and "night" disc, starting with the rhythmic, then moving to pure atmospheric drifts. The final track "Altus", Latin for both "high" and "deep", says much about this work. The most demanding and textural of Roach's work, it has more in common with 20th century avant-garde than other genres. A chilling and beautiful continuous flow of harmonic sound-worlds. Melody and harmony are present throughout in a surreal play of light and dark colors. Created during the HALCYON DAYS of winter 1995, this recording can be compared to the Suspended Memories sessions, where the magic of the moment is sought after and captured on tape during the extensive 10-day marathon session in which the music was created. Kent and Newby of Trance Mission and Lights in a Fat City have played together for years. A visit to the Timeroom for the collaboration with Steve presented a unique chapter in their mutual pursuit of empowered music for the "Archaic Revival". 1997 Cavern of Sirens http://www.namipan.com/d/baf2116ab8333eb2292785cf5fd9db61b9e53792b53e1505 The journey continues as Roach and Vidna Obmana delve further into the terrain first traversed on the acclaimed WELL OF SOULS. The nearly 74 minute result is at once alluring and focused, fusing the duo's continuously evolving signature of electro-trance percussion and rich harmonic textures. A compelling journey of two artists exploring the pure music they crave. On This Planet http://www.namipan.com/d/d42eecf68af7712df0ff69920f969c9ba4f2d42b98074106 Anyone who has seen Steve Roach perform live knows that his music and sound worlds have a unique power to inspire and engage the listener. ON THIS PLANET was carved from the live experience, recorded in the studio over 1997 just before and after performing numerous concerts worldwide. The intensity of the moment is captured, along with remarkable quality of sound which is vital to the impact of the music. It all comes together here. Ethno-Tribal, Electronic-Space, Tribal-Ambient -- or however one wants to try and classify a style of music and sound unique to Steve Roach. This dynamic concert for your home is presented just as the concerts of '97 were, in a constant flow of sonic magma, constantly unfolding and then melting into itself to create the nexus place. This release was voted best Electronic-Ambient CD of the year in 1998 by AIFM, the equivalent of a Grammy for indie labels. 1998 Slow Heat http://www.namipan.com/d/77e4ff13665f9341455a96cb65d4abbad342e0ab8a491a05 This is the first release in a Special Edition series that continues in the spirit of the infinite playback sound-world environments explored on THE DREAM CIRCLE and "To The Threshold of Silence" from WORLD'S EDGE. SLOW HEAT rises and falls, breathes in and exhales a constant flow of calming influence. Shaped over two summers of evaluation on Steve's patio playback system, the sounds of the warm desert nights were found to be in perfect tune to the sound-world playing back for hours on the speakers outdoors. These sounds were recorded by stretching 50 foot mic cables from the Timeroom out into the desert night, capturing a pure moment of natural magic to be included in the piece. Perhaps no other long-form piece from Steve has placed the listener in such an intimate and subtle expression of the sensual nature of the desert atmosphere. Dust to Dust http://www.namipan.com/d/d8e4b874851c48505ea88ad31d8713c1e089f876cc2e8103 Western Music in the truest sense. It is a bold step in a new direction: Where sounds paint pictures with a range of colors drawn from the land, where stories are told with the instruments of old and new pioneers. Guitars, harmonicas and washboard rhythms find their place next to a wagon full of electronics. This is the music, and even more the soundtrack, to the lingering ghosts and the lost and not-so-forgotten dreams of the restless souls driven to "Go West by God!" The story shifts between the present and the recent past when a dust trail was the only road west. The rails were freshly laid, still wet with sweat and blood. For better or worse, hopes and dreams turned real in the vast southwestern deserts, becoming a metaphor for a clean slate and a better life. "DUST TO DUST has the mystery and allure of 150 year old photographs of strangers whose eyes and stoic faces suggest a thousand untold stories." -- (Mark Burby, AP magazine) 1999 Truth & Beauty: The Lost Pieces Volume Two http://www.namipan.com/d/7e280e367079ded3fb5bb75c59f1114c38ff02fbdd36ec04 This second Timeroom Editions release flows with a prime collection of lost pieces from the DREAMTIME RETURN period up to 1998. Some of the pieces have appeared on multi-artist samplers, while others have been gathered for this special release. TRUTH & BEAUTY creates a connected story line, which seems to fit together like the soundtrack to an imaginary film. Check the discography for a track listing. Atmospheric Conditions http://www.namipan.com/d/d49e7d48ca632f55cefa105b6b9ce5b3d0fc3d48364d4a06 Over two years in the making, ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS melts through five intoxicating soundworlds with an intention that's pure and deep. Steve states, "as time goes on, I feel the need to create ever more potent soundworlds that maintain the opening beyond the ordinary states of consciousness we experience in our daily life, and at the same time provide an almost womb-like feeling that builds over time after numerous listenings." Ascension of Shadows Part 1 - Somewhere Else http://www.namipan.com/d/d0da8d996ad39f85660907bd3e924b88db060ea3afbbc707 Part 2 - The Memory Pool http://www.namipan.com/d/b0a5fe3a6b768618c96c27cf3a27ee7968ffdaa855b0c005 Part 3 - Rvealing The Secret http://www.namipan.com/d/a0dd0fd93c1d231b1bc2fca904bac21ebdd28be3bcac3b06 The next chapter in the collaborative work between Steve Roach and Vidna Obmana is sure to delight those who appreciate the more serene, atmospheric side of their work together. On Ascension, the artists return to a more minimal core of sounds and approaches to reveal an atmosphere that flows for over three hours. As the acceleration toward the new century builds, this music offers a space for repose so needed these days. Dreaming... Now, Then: A Retrospective 1982 - 1997 http://www.namipan.com/d/7c971f471fc31c96ec3292457b0558d9a9b36ce9d196740c This double CD presents selected pieces from Steve Roach's large body of work on the Fortuna Records label. Carefully selected and sequenced by the artist himself, and remasterd by Roger King, Disc 1 presents the rhythmic-electro-tribal-trance side of his work in nearly chronological order, starting with "The Ritual Continues" from 1982 and winding down with a previously unreleased live montage from 1997. Disc 2 presents an overview from the vast atmospheric soundworlds that only Steve can brew up. A stirring, spiraling, unreleased archive piece closes the second disk in a subtle yet profound way, illustrating why this influential artist continues to inspire listeners worldwide. Body Electric http://www.namipan.com/d/98bbe1fa4da639da4f8daa53337b0f21e16ab9afc29c7f04 Get ready for a new level in bio-electronic "soul stirring body music, forged out of the reflections from the gene pool from which we crawled out." This collaboration has brought about a powerful step forward for both artists. Judging from those who have previewed this recording, it is sure to surprise, delight and perhaps short-circuit fans of dynamic electronic-organic music. This album was created on the instruments of our time by two artists who have reached deep into the heart of the machines, pulling out the passion captured on BODY ELECTRIC. Light Fantastic http://www.namipan.com/d/e00cf2ebb8cf0c8c31ef53bd8c841c6b32911a5d3a5b7f08 LIGHT FANTASTIC does much to subvert one's expectations of musical structure, while remaining unabashedly beautiful throughout. Roach's soundworlds have never sounded more rich and full of light. On the other hand, the complexity of the 'fractal grooves' allows the hybrid percussion to assume what would be the melodic content of a given piece. The rhythms are as willful and intricate as an African drumming group or drum 'n' bass track, continually morphing from one pattern into another, describing animated moiré patterns in sound. 2000 Vine ~ Bark & Spore http://www.namipan.com/d/80a39beea94ea1cb6e31a14f9975535103a40770394ae209 VINE ~ BARK & SPORE captures a pure, organic sound that is rich with a potent magical atmosphere. The remote and mysterious locations deep in Mexico's historic landscape, as well as the hallucinogenic terrain of the Sonoran desert in Southern Arizona, provide the ground where this music takes place. The musical elixir was created from a surreal blending of acoustic and electronic instruments, along with voice and location recordings. With strong shamanic undercurrents, it creates an opening to step through time and again. VINE ~ BARK & SPORE offers music as medicine for the soul. The music of Roach and Reyes acts as a transmitter of the attitudes that ancient cultures had towards music and the spiritual aspects of life, while merging with the currents of today. Early Man http://www.namipan.com/d/286745a28ce0019c8eadfdf7df40aba0dcbc2b9c4de65f0c Best described as primeval innerspace deep ambient. EARLY MAN brings into form an ancient landscape of bubbling pools and steamy marshlands, verdant arroyos and monolithic rock formations. Cave paintings and ancient memories come to life in a slow soul-dance of evolutionary magic. The accolades from press and listeners alike tell that EARLY MAN belongs to Roach's classic body of work which includes DREAMTIME RETURN, ORIGINS, THE MAGNIFICENT VOID and last year's quietly successful MIDNIGHT MOON. Live Archive http://www.namipan.com/d/c4dcc54d30cd48a20f54ea27c7187cfd1e7631820821d903 A blending of selected live high points from concerts in 1997 in the US and Europe. It contains almost all new and unreleased material created for the tour, as well as improvisations that captured the atmosphere of the performance space in Italy: an outdoor Roman-era amphitheater set within a mountain-top village. Take the spirit of their previous studio releases, and unleash this in the live setting of duel didgeridoos, deep soundworlds, trance grooves, shamanic percussion, flutes, ocarinas and otherworldly spirit voices. The result unfolds like one perfect uninterrupted concert in your own space. Midnight Moon http://www.namipan.com/d/001bc8bc17a77019cb5fd6d6457b6433afa84a3602d45608 Touching the ineffable, this music presents a meditation on solitude and quiet isolation. Atmospheric music in the true sense of the word. Ambiguous and quietly mysterious, this slow swirling lattice of smoky melodic-harmonic patterns rises and falls out of the silence which becomes an equal component with the music. "Rife with mood and substance, MIDNIGHT MOON is the ultimate in melancholy space music, representing some of Roach's most enigmatic and intuitive music to date." (Mark Burby) The Serpent's Lair http://www.namipan.com/d/f8729d29b54d84ab1b550fa2cedc8a15767e87b68fb0e807 Beginning as a collaboration between Steve Roach and Byron Metcalf, the music on THE SERPENT'S LAIR evolved over the past year into an epic 2-CD set, augmented with a myriad of guests. This release has it all: Steve's ultra-soundworlds, hybrid grooves and magical production, combined with Byron's acoustic-organic tribal trance patterns. Aligning with themes of shamanic initiation found throughout the world, the music is rooted in the organic... the earth... the ancestors... It is here that one is confronted with all the essential elements of danger and possibility. Prayers to the Protector http://www.namipan.com/d/1b841cfa5ead4ffb74697c3ca9dda000daec7c2dc6d82a06 The relationship between Thupten Nyandak Pema Lama and Celestial Harmonies goes back to the mid-eighties when producer David Parsons recorded the first album by the monks of the Dip Tse Chok Ling Monastery in Dharamsala, India, for Fortuna Records, Sacred Ceremonies. At the time of this writing, there are three volumes in the Sacred Ceremonies series, with more in various planning stages. The recordings have been well received by a wide audience in many countries, from lay people interested in Buddhist culture to followers of the religion to listeners like director Bernardo Bertolucci who used some of their chants in 'Little Buddha'. Likewise, Steve Roach's relationship with Fortuna Records and thus Celestial Harmonies goes back to the mid-eighties, and Roach has since assembled a veritable catalogue of recordings in his inimitable style of electronic and acoustic/electronic music. It therefore came as no surprise that Thupten thought of visiting Tucson, Arizona, and spending the night at Steve's house (cum recording studio) on the outskirts of Tucson. During that visit in 1996 the chant portion of the present recording was made, having been inspired by Thupten's daily chanting of prayers from the Lama Ch?pa, (also known as Guru Puja in sanskrit), and essential compendium of daily prayers for Tibetan buddhists. "In Paris, I heard a recording of Tibetan singing with this more modern music, and I thought someday I would like to do this myself," Thupten said almost immediately. Steve set up a microphone and Thupten proceeded to sing from the Lama Ch?pa that he carries with him wherever he goes. Some of these chants are devotions to the gurus and deities who assist seekers on the path to enlightenment. Others are PRAYERS TO THE PROTECTORs who deflect evil influences and cleanse the world of imbalances, negative emotions and ego-driven states of mind. The chants, which are sung formally at the monastery by all the monks twice a month, are an integral part of the individual's practice. Thupten told us that he recites these prayers alone at least once a day, sometimes letting them flow silently through his mind, other times feeling the compassion and strength they provide rising from his own voice. He sang his favorites during that impromptu session in the Timeroom. An hour later, after he closed his prayer book and recorded a brief interview, it was time for him to go. While there is an enduring quality of great power and comfort in these age-old chants, Thupten Pema Lama felt that Westerners and young monks taking the tradition into the 21st century would benefit from hearing them in an updated setting. For Steve, it was an unexpected challenge: from the afternoon of December 31, 1999 through the first 18 days of 2000, he held vigil in the Timeroom, creating a sacred sonic space worthy of supporting, and at certain moments amplifying, the feelings of devotion, compassion, protection and unfathomable mystery resonating throughout Thupten's recitations. "When the chants were originally recorded, Thupten and I talked about how we could bring them to the West in a context of clear and direct understatement," Steve remembers. "I waited for the right moment to bring my own soundworlds into the picture, for a time when I was ready to devote myself to the task with the reverence it deserved. During those first weeks of a most auspicious new year, I absorbed Thupten's chants from day into night, adding sounds from the deep well of inspiration these ancient chants inspired in me, stripping away what was unecessary until finally the circle was complete. Considering the way in which the initial idea practically came knocking on my door, and the place I had to go in myself to contribute to the project, PRAYERS TO THE PROTECTOR is for me a very special release." 2001 Blood Machine http://www.namipan.com/d/20cbbe972dcbf8b012181048bd0596bf2d1711a297952e07 The evolution of Elegant Futurism... This is the next highly-anticipated chapter in the BODY ELECTRIC / LIGHT FANTASTIC story, except this time it's a new book altogether. This project has gone through several phases in its development over the past two years. Numerous pieces were created and set aside as the artists made new discoveries and continued pushed the envelope further than ever before. Roach and Vir Unis pulled out all the stops to create a music experience that flows with the natural precision of the body's life-blood, by way of a constant enfoldment of hyperstate fractal grooves and luminous soundworlds that are unique to their collaborative spirit. Time of the Earth http://www.namipan.com/d/856716d5b05fd1035e51893a89840392045d021e7429a506 TIME OF THE EARTH offers a unique DVD immersion experience. Either as an engaging audio-visual odyssey or for the environmental enhancement of one's living space, this captivating film experience invites repeat viewings. Two completely different soundtracks complement the visual-ambient atmosphere. Core http://www.namipan.com/d/803418d57a8011119a781e2df983f48964602e998e14960a Steve's new 2001 solo release CORE has evolved into a dynamic convergence of his most essential organic, electronic, rhythmic and atmospheric elements and what could be his most elegant and powerful dynamic solo release in years. This summer has been a time of renewal as Roach turned away from all concerts, collaborations and other offers, directing the focus deep into the heart of this powerful journey, back to the core. 100% pure Steve Roach music. Streams & Currents http://www.namipan.com/d/88947b83d2b926e8b0a535c598fb66bad09744ce06cec207 STREAMS & CURRENTS creates a sanctuary that is rarely found in today's music. The perfect atmosphere for contemplation and dreaming with eyes open.is imbued with an ephemeral quality that seems to linger at the edge of conscious perception, creating an introspective, enveloping flow of mood-altering pieces. The album progresses into deeper, darker, warmer, and quieter zones, towards a beautiful submerged ending. The mercurial ebb and flow found within STREAMS & CURRENTS creates a sanctuary that is rarely found in today's music. The perfect atmosphere for contemplation and dreaming with eyes open. Pure Flow: Timeroom Editions Collection 1 http://www.namipan.com/d/3fb76ec0f375d83afbb83f54629e8c38f6b7677503093e0a This fine collection is an essential 71 minute flow of atmospheric soundscapes taken from the Timeroom Editions series, selected and sequenced for continuous playback. The combined presentation of PURE FLOW casts a new light on these tracks with the result feeling like a new long-form journey. An unreleased piece completes the specially-priced collection. All the pieces have been remastered to enhance the flow. 2002 InnerZone http://www.namipan.com/d/8585301d6dcb1791b99d727a5b460ba6f4950dc33595cd07 Step into the INNERZONE with surrealist soundsculptors Steve Roach and vidnaObmana on their first new collaborative work since 1999's quickly sold-out limited-edition box set ASCENSION OF SHADOWS. Venturing off safe and well travelled roads, the duo head into a chilling and beautifully haunting realm of shape-shifting soundscapes mixed with fascinating rhythmic forms. An unusual combination of instruments both acoustic and electronic can be heard on this compelling release. Central is the fujara, an Eastern European overtone flute, and the electric guitar — both creatively altered with a multitude of audio processing equipment to create a hybrid elecro-acoustic mix. The final merging of surreal acoustic, electronic elements and deep "inner" rhythms creates a bold new atmospheric music experience. Trance Spirits http://www.namipan.com/d/cb05c4ef71fbdd09e4f8a04795e2c950d86c3823db62010b TRANCE SPIRITS by Steve Roach, Jeffrey Fayman, Robert Fripp and Momodou Kah represents the next step in genuine tribal ambient soundscapes. This amazing gathering of artists makes a magnificent leap into the future of acoustically-fused electronic music. Five of the seven pieces are driven by a complex juggernaut of authentic African percussion, performed as long-form groove trance pieces by Fayman and Kah. As opposed to just using loops to conjure the desired mood, TRANCE SPIRITS is a real continuum of time, with subtle evolution within the tracks. Entwined with the shamanic / trance-inducing soundworlds created by Roach, and augmented by Fripp on three tracks, the combined effect unleashes the primal forces of nature with a boiling undercurrent of rich, transporting textures. Day Out of Time http://www.namipan.com/d/20d51d7cee945f9f440415dfc2dc5b13678296eab371810a This soundtrack contains classic tracks along with out-of-print and hard-to-find pieces woven together to tell the wordless story originally released on the recent desert dreamtime DVD on Projekt, TIME OF THE EARTH. As such, it provides a comprehensive view of Steve's influential tribal-ambient and desert-ambient soundworlds. Like last year's PURE FLOW collection, the sequence of the tracks melding into one continuous flow reflects a new perspective on the different eras of Steve's work. Supporting the theme is a hauntingly beautiful cover image that Steve has been saving for the right release, ever since 1987. This black & white image is from a remote part of Mono Lake in California, and taken by reknown nature photographer Jim Stimson. The image itself seems to emanate a world of sound that occurs on this day out of time. Darkest Before Dawn http://www.namipan.com/d/a0772bf05fe92c53d9791d323bcec3af9249f90cf3f4940a A deep zoneworld of glacial movement and magma-like flow, no beginning, no end... you have just been dropped off in a far corner of space, and what's that I hear? Imagine STRUCTURES FROM SILENCE emanating from a point far beyond. If a Mark Rothko painting could make sound, this might be it... 74 minutes x repeat mode = a severe change in atmospheric conditions... and possible hypnogogic states. Created September, 2002. This minimal, immersive sound environment can be considered a prelude to MYSTIC CHORDS & SACRED SPACES. All is Now All is Now cd1 - All is Now http://www.namipan.com/d/e03a49e493bdc147e65922fc35101eae95c263b55ea3940a All is Now cd2 - Live in Sedona http://www.namipan.com/d/9cfdcd57a1a70a0bcb4477313e647a2b476e26da139bfc09 Fresh from concerts in 2002, this purely live double-CD release presents the current evolution of Steve's iconoclastic live experience captured at select U.S. dates earlier this year. For the duration of the first half of this year, Steve was on a constant program of performing on the road, then returning home for a few weeks at a time, setting up the live system in The Timeroom to create new sounds and reflect on previous concerts. This proved to be a refreshing alternative to the tour-'til-you-drop approach as the evolution of the music and soundworlds were greatly enhanced by this process. Elements from CORE, STREAMS & CURRENTS, EARLY MAN and INNERZONE are here, but the spontaneous moments within these two CD's, along with many new pieces and spaces created just for these events, gives this experience an atmosphere than can only come from stepping out from the safety of the studio environment. From the intimate to the immediate, the intensity of these sound journeys with the audience onboard is clearly captured and alive. The 'mobile Timeroom' events were recorded at Sedona Arizona, Oakland and San Francisco California, Portland Oregon, and the SFMOMA / Yoko Ono event. It is an astonishing series of recordings. At times I found myself facing the darkest of the dark in the collective unconscious. Just as I thought I had reached the edge of where I could go in my voyaging, a tonal shift would occur and carry me into a delicious and heart-achingly beautiful space of unparalleled hope and faith. These recordings are both initiatory, and a veritable soul-retrieval in this time of widespread soul loss. In essence, this is healing sound. Arranged as a collection of four discs, each is a stand-alone musicscape experience. Yet, as a full collection MYSTIC CHORDS & SACRED SPACES is nothing short of initiation, each disk building upon the energy of the previous one, opening out into vast domains and vistas, carrying us deep into subterranean realms of luminosity. MYSTIC CHORDS & SACRED SPACES is a vibrant topography, a map leading us to the dwelling places of sentient and divine energy." -- Frank MacEowen, author of From the Celtic Dreamtime, The Mist-Filled Path, and Chasing The Deer Space and Time http://www.namipan.com/d/4eb312c6d54ea6beca0ba71b2c3250eccfb4776301eb9104 SPACE AND TIME offers a unique overview of the nearly 20 years of groundbreaking recordings from noted ambient pioneer Steve Roach. Excerpting tracks from his 13 Projekt CD's, Roach hand-selected and mixed these pieces into a perfect flow which serves as an ideal insight into his vast recorded history. "Space" and "time" are two themes that run constant in all Roach's music. Rich with emotion and nuance, his sound creations evoke a strong sense of space and atmosphere while simultaneously altering the perception of time within that space. From the expansive, time-suspending landscapes reflected in releases such as 1984's STRUCTURES FROM SILENCE and 2003's MYSTIC CHORDS & SACRED SPACES to the fire breathing, rhythmic-shamanic expressions woven from all things electric and organic on 1989's DREAMTIME RETURN and 2000's THE SERPENT'S LAIR, Roach has earned his position in the international pantheon of major ambient-atmospheric-electronic artists. Fueled by his prolific nature and uncompromising approach, SPACE AND TIME invites the listener on a 74-minute journey into the extraordinary soundworlds of Steve Roach. Texture Maps: The Lost Pieces Vol. 3 http://www.namipan.com/d/f45028386f1771da16e17da7bd5fd17176453cbce2b14f06 This purely atmospheric set maps the shift from the tonal serenity found on Steve's earlier work towards the harmonically rich and contrasted souldworlds of late. The centerpiece of TEXTURE MAPS is a pivotal 20-minute piece recorded the same week as "Looking for Safety" from DREAMTIME RETURN. Titled "Grey and Purple", it's a genuine lost piece from 1987 that foreshadows Steve's sonic evolution as later realized on THE MAGNIFICENT VOID and ultimately MYSTIC CHORDS & SACRED SPACES. Life Sequence http://www.namipan.com/d/7f5eb43ae2fce49675dc448378f5cae75b86e1da9ab1880a A chronicle of new and classic unreleased pure electronic sequencer-driven pieces filled with beauty and emotion. Spiraling melodic sequences, floating majestic textures along with thematic and melodic contributions from guest synthesist Paul Ellis all add up to a set of music that is filled with optimism and passion from start to conclusion. "Steve has really produced what must be the first CD that mixes sequencers and space-music, but manages to have all the atmosphere of classic cosmic music despite the fact that he uses rhythmic 'devices'. It somehow all blends seamlessly and the one simply adds to the other when, in the hands of so many others, it would be just a mix of two styles at odds with each other. A superb CD and yet another winner, for me the best one so far that combines electronic rhythms as well as the soundscaping." -- Andy Garibaldi, CD Services Scotland 2004 Spirit Dome http://www.namipan.com/d/48c111c04402808d75cd738403460086cc7b4a06fc7e8707 Steve Roach / Vidna Obmana's 2002 CD INNERZONE served as the doorway to the surreal environment explored on SPIRIT DOME. Recorded in one continuous 74-minute session, this is a dark sanctuary of pure texture and beautiful, if not at times foreboding, dissonance pulled along with pulsing beats, subtle loops and dense soundworlds. The single piece, "Spirit Dome," captures a chilling gothic ambience that offers the exploration of remote psychological states of awareness. This is achieved by way of extensive live processing of instruments including fujara (overtone flute), guitar, and the seemingly bottomless wellspring of electro-acoustic sounds found only in the duo's soundscapes. SPIRIT DOME was created live on the spot in room 314, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on May 24th 2002, around 1 AM. Steve Roach and Vidna Obmana were in town preparing for their performance at the 2002 Gathering / Projekt Festival. With only a brief window of time in which to work together before returning to their homes on opposite sides of the Atlantic, their reaction to the claustrophobic urban environment reveals a new dimension to their sound. When listening to the recording unfold, one has to keep remembering that this unscripted spontaneous creation was a live session recorded directly to the stereo master, just as you will hear. No post-production edits or overdubs were performed. Past discs from the duo include 1995's WELL OF SOULS, 1997's CAVERN OF SIRENS and 2002's INNERZONE; add their live concerts together in Europe and the U.S. and we are brought to the enveloping world of SPIRIT DOME. The music's foundation is built upon long mid-tempo hybrid grooves with strong bass elements created from a combination of acoustic and electronic means. Steve Roach's atmospheric and loop-spun melodic guitar textures rise and fall, intermix with his synth and computer alchemy to create an aura of complex emotional import. The overall feeling of FEVER DREAMS is one shrouded in an exotic amber-colored light filtering through an overgrown mental landscape of last night's lingering FEVER DREAMS; the sensual atmosphere is especially present on the 30 minute track "Tantra Mantra" featuring percussionist Byron Metcalf. This release of floating, hypnotic groove meditations sets the course on a new direction presented over the three interconnected "Fever releases" planned throughout 2004. Slow heartbeat-like acoustic frame drum, overtone voice, Didgeridoo, Bansuri flute, and Tamboura drones mix with a majestic tapestry of organic electronic textures, offering the sonic equivalent of the power found when gazing into timeless Mandala images found in classic sacred art. The entire CD holds a consistent interconnected feeling that seems to spiral outwards when experienced in repeat playback. In HOLDING THE SPACE, the second installment in the FEVER DREAMS series, soundcurrent wizard Steve Roach dishes up a heroic dose of powerful sonic textures saturated with archetypal power from the collective ancestral depths. Take a breath and plunge head-first into an astonishing blend of meticulously crafted synth worlds and multi-layered throbbing grooves, augmented by the high-velocity percussion of Byron Metcalf and the achingly beautiful vocals of Jennifer Grais. This holotropic recording pulses with life and spirit, beckoning each of us to journey to our depths to discover (or recover) what possibilities we are destined to embody. This is archaeology of the soul." – Frank MacEowen, M.A., author, shamanic-guide Places Beyond: The Lost Pieces 4 http://www.namipan.com/d/0110cfc9aacb8daac8e366efa2697b93e9ada394cbb00f06 With this 4th edition of the Lost Pieces series at hand, it's clear more than ever that these unique releases seem to have a curious way of taking on an interconnected life of their own. An undercurrent of congruency between the pieces is consistently apparent in these projects and in this release, even though the pieces were created over a longer span of time and under unique and seemingly disparate situations. As a starting point, I will draw from a large pool of unreleased and lost tracks. It's like shuffling through a large box of puzzle pieces looking for the shapes and colors from which to begin telling a particular story that I'm discovering along the way. It's very much a mosaic, formed out of the richness that each piece or soundworld passage holds on its own. From there the combined resonance of the pieces starts to take over and fully reveals itself as a whole. Making the outcome more than simply a collection of pieces, this kind of process results in a structure, theme, and sonic storyline that could not be arrived at through other routes traveled on a tighter timeframe with specific intentions. -- Steve Roach, November 2004 2005 Possible Planet http://www.namipan.com/d/241aacc500c5e5e0bd051e21fd5030d4f8c25cde4f3c4308 This pivotal new long-form soundworld work pulls back the layers and increases the magnification to reveal a truly organic, analog-based core sound at a level not heard before in Steve's music. The metaphor of emerging lifeforms on a possible planet sets the mood for the three movements presented as a continuous immersive zone. "Wet", "shimmering", "cellular" and "diaphanous" are some words that could describe this living-breathing soundscape. "While this long from zoneworld was created between December 2004 and May 2005, it developed into a pivotal new release for me. It's also included in The Dreamtime Box because it represents a parallel in some ways to "Looking For Safety" from DREAMTIME RETURN. As an artist if you live long enough to draw a line back in time, the recurring themes can link up to create an interesting graph of stylistic confluence. These two pieces, POSSIBLE PLANET and "Looking For Safety" (recorded in 1986) are at similar points on that graph, with many years in-between them and created in very different circumstances, but still sharing the same air. "During my 'analog rebirth' (see below) this desire started emerging to create a kind of soundscape environment which portrayed an undefined life form as it's just starting to emerge from the primordial soup on some distant planet. The sounds were forming in my imagination and were brought to life as you hear them across three movements. This set the mood for the idea of expressing the emerging, evolving sense of consciousness coming into form." The Process... "I have always had a visceral connection to the instruments which I choose to channel my energies. Sonically POSSIBLE PLANET is the result of an analog rebirth that started for me last Fall. A series of events created a craving obsession in my imagination and within my ears to hear and create from pure means, not digital to analog converted or virtual analog, frozen waveforms or soft-synths. I wanted to feel the current coming right out of the wall, and shape it from that point forward. POSSIBLE PLANET was created completely on a modular analog system which I assembled over a five-month period. As the sonic life form was evolving, the system that was creating it was evolving as well, in order for the changes to occur. This was also a great metaphor for the themes of the emerging cellular life forms I was dreaming into. "In order to remove the reliable and familiar modes of working, I eliminated a few basics: no MIDI, keyboards of any kind, or computers for composition and editing. It was all about twisting knobs, feeling it in my fingertips and coaxing the current into the desired direction. POSSIBLE PLANET was recorded during three live sessions. Each session would start after several days of creating and learning the nuances of a 'living' patch I had created, from which the soundforms were drawn." New Life Dreaming http://www.namipan.com/d/4c3bfed9d8a147bf96ba3cd47a9b3164a0ded8fab124e007 From the first chord of "Perfect Dream" to the final fade of "In the Eye Of Noche", NEW LIFE DREAMING presents an unbroken feeling of connection to essential meditations found on STRUCTURES FROM SILENCE, QUIET MUSIC and DREAMTIME RETURN. All of these pieces were created during late 2004 and 2005. The process of remastering DREAMTIME RETURN helped open the door into that timeless place found in Steve's most appreciated works. NEW LIFE DREAMING represents an essential chapter in the book of quiet, nourishing and graceful sound paintings. "The desire to tap into the soundcurrent from which the Dreamtime music was drawn just seemed inevitable after the remastering process started in December of last year. It's a living, breathing, space for me which has continued to flow down deep over the years. As I re-opened the door to this dreamtime space, the creative urges and subtle cues to follow the trail deeper was immediately reinforced by several new pieces which feel directly connected to this indescribable quality. These new pieces just flowed out. There was no big agenda, concept or sense of obligation to make them feel like they belonged on the DREAMTIME RETURN discs. All the pieces came from a calm space, just letting things breathe and not being in any hurry to go anywhere. Now that they are complete, I feel the pieces speak of the subtle blooms that occur in the heart and mind when you slow it all down." Elegant and sophisticated throughout, the CD covers a wider range of terrain than his previous release. He brings in a few acoustic elements as well, and knows how to blend these with the right touch. Add to this some fine guest performances, including Steve Roach on four tracks. Foundations for two of these tracks were created from live Timeroom improvs with Paul, Steve, Will Merkel and Jeffrey Koepper. Gently immersive and especially effective at low volume, the non-dynamic nature of this space can support sleeping as well as creative states, reading and other functions where "music" is considered invasive.
