These are all words in ‘dvitīyā vibhakti’, accusative case. In ‘dvitīyā vibhakti’, singular words ending in ‘a’, ‘ā’ and ‘ī’ end with the ‘ṁ’ sound. subhāṣitam (good counsel) idānīṁ vayam ekaṁ subhāṣitaṁ śṛuṇumaḥ (now we listen to a subhāṣitaṁ) annadānam paraṁ dānaṁ vidyādānam ataḥ param\Nannena kṣaṇikā tṛptiḥ yāvajjīvam ca vidyayā dānam karaṇīyaṁ (charity must be done) annadānaṁ yadi kurmaḥ (if we donate food) mahādānam iti vadanti (it is said to be highest form of charity) annadānaṁ mahādānam (food donation is the highest donation) parantu annena kṣaṇikā tṛptiḥ (but food gives momentary satisfaction) yadi annadānaṁ kurmaḥ (if we donate food) yadā bhubhukṣā bhavati tāvat paryantam tiṣṭhati (it remains till we are hungry) ekaṁ dinaṁ vā ardhaṁ dinaṁ vā tiṣṭhati (it remains for a day or half a day) parantu yadi vidyādānaṁ kurmaḥ (however if we donate education) yāvat jīvaṁ tiṣṭhati (it stays for a lifetime) ataḥ vidyādānaṁ mahādānam iti subhāṣitakāraḥ vadati (so the author of the subhāṣitam says that donation of education is the best) Donation of food is indeed the best but donation of education is the best of all. Donation of food will quench hunger for a short time and satisfy you But donation of education will quench and satisfy the thirst of a lifetime. kathā (story) aham ekāṁ kathāṁ kathayāmi. śṛṇvantu (I shall tell a story. listen) candraguptaḥ iti ekaḥ mahārājaḥ āsīt (there was an emperor called Candragupta) saḥ mahārājaḥ Magadha deśam pālayati sma (he used to rule over Magadha) magadha deśasya rājā āsīt (he was the king of Magadha) tasya amātyaḥ candraguptasya amātyaḥ cāṇakya iti (his minister Candragupta’s minister was Cāṇakya) saḥ bahu buddhimān niḥspṛhaḥ ca āsīt (he was very intelligent and detached) āśā nāsti tasya (he had no expectations) yadyapi saḥ mahārājasya amātyaḥ (even though he was the emperor’s minister) tathāpi saḥ sarala jīvanaṁ yāpayati sma (even then he lived a simple life) sāmānya jīvanaṁ (simple life) sarala jīvanaṁ yāpayati sma (he lived a simple life) ekadā candraguptaḥ cāṇakyam āhvayati (once Candragupta calls Cāṇakya) prajābhyaḥ datum kambalān yacchati (gives him blankets for distribution to the people) prajābhyaḥ vitaraṇam karotu iti (‘distribute this to the people’) saḥ cāṇakyaḥ tasya gṛhaṁ nayati (Cāṇakya took it home) kambalān tasya gṛhaṁ nayati (took the blankets to his home) vastutaḥ cāṇakyaḥ mahā amātyaḥ (actually Cāṇakya is a great minister) tathāpi saḥ sāmānya kuṭīre vāsam karoti (even then he lives in a simple hut) sah kambalān tasya kuṭīraṁ nayati (he took the blankets to his hut) cāṇakyaḥ gṛhaṁ netvā atha rāśīm kṛtavān (Cāṇakya took them home and stacked them up) kambalān rāśī asti atra (here is a stack of blankets) śaityakālaḥ āsīt (it was winter) saḥ śayanaṁ kṛtavān (he slept) bahu śaityam (very cold) saḥ kampati sma ( he was shivering) tathāpi saḥ kambalaṁ vinā śayanaṁ kṛtavān (even then he slept without a blanket) ekaḥ coraḥ eṣaḥ mahā dhanikaḥ asti yataḥ mahārājasya amātyaḥ (a thief (thought) ‘he is very rich since he is the emperor’s minister’) asya gṛhe bahuni dhanāni santi (‘he will have a lot of wealth in his house’) corayāmaḥ iti mitreṇa saḥ āgatavān (‘we can steal’ (thinking like this) he came with his friend) āgatya paśyati (he comes and sees) cāṇakyaḥ nidrām karoti (Cāṇakya is sleeping) śaityakālaḥ bahu śaityam asti (it is winter, very cold) kampate (he is shivering) tathāpi saḥ pārśva payati kambalān rāśī asti (even then – he sees the stack of blankets nearby) tathāpi saḥ na dhṛtavān (even then he did not use it) eteyoḥ bahu āścaryam abhavat (the two of them were very surprised) kambalān rāśī asti (there is a stack of blankets) cāṇakyaḥ tathaiva suptavān (Cāṇakya was sleeping just like that) patnī api tathaiva suptavatī (his wife was also sleeping just like that) iti tasya āścaryam abhavat corasya (so the thief was surprised) anataraṁ saḥ coraḥ antaḥ gatvā cāṇakyam utthāpayati (later the thief went inside and wakes Cāṇakya) cāṇakyaḥ utthāya upaviśati (Cāṇakya wakes and sits up) bhoḥ kimartham āgatavantaḥ iti pṛcchati (He asks, ‘Sir, why have you come?’) anataraṁ coraḥ pṛcchati (then the thief asks) bhoḥ mahāśaya atra kambalān rāśī asti (Sir, there is a stack of blankets) tathāpi na dhṛtavān kila (even then you haven’t used any) śaityakālaḥ śaityam asti (it is winter, cold) kimartham evam kṛtavān (why did he do so?) kimartham na dhṛtavān (why haven’t you used any) iti saḥ coraḥ kutuhalena pṛcchati (the thief asked curiously) tadā cāṇakyaḥ evaṁ vadati (at that time Cāṇakya says like this) bhoḥ kambalānām rāśī asti (‘Sir, there is a stack of blankets) rājā madarthaṁ na dattavān (the king has not given it for me) kambalān madarthaṁ na dattavān (the king has not given the blankets for me) prajābhyaḥ vitaraṇam kartuṁ dattavān (he gave it for distribution to the people) ataḥ aham etān kambalān na dharāmi iti saḥ vadati (therefore I am not using these blankets’, he said) corasya āścaryam bhavati (the thief is surprised) kimartham evam asti iti (why is it so?) tadā coraḥ vadati (then the thief says) tadā coraḥ cāṇakyam pṛcchati (then the thief asks Cāṇakya) mahāśaya bhavān kīdṛśaḥ dayālu athavā niḥspṛaḥ asti (how merciful or detached you are) vayam itaḥ param caurya kāryaṁ na kurmaḥ (from now on we’ll not steal) ataḥ bhavataḥ sakhāśat vayaṁ śikṣitavantaḥ (by your presence we have been taught) ataḥ itaḥ param vayam caurya kāryaṁ na kurmaḥ (therefore from now on we’ll not steal) iti te caurya kāryaṁ tyaktvā sajjanāḥ bhavantaḥ (they gave up stealing and become good men) tadā coraḥ vadati (then the thief says) bhoḥ bhavataḥ niḥspṛaḥatām dṛśṭvā asmākaṁ lajjā bhavati (Sir, on seeing your detachment I’m feeling ashamed) vayam itaḥ param caurya kāryaṁ na kurmaḥ (from now on we’ll not steal) iti kṣamāṁ yācanti (like this they begged for forgiveness) kathāyāḥ arthaḥ jnātaḥ vā (have you all understood the meaning of the story?) jnātaḥ (we understand) aho cāṇakyasya niḥspṛaḥatā (Oh! Cāṇakya’s detachment) astu dhanyavādaḥ (OK. thank you) namo namaḥ (greetings)
