奥克斯是个铁杆左派，曾经亲自去智利支援阿连德，和智利民歌手维克多·哈拉成了朋友。哈拉后来被智利军政府杀害。
越战结束后，美国的抗议民歌手失去了方向，同时也失去了市场。奥克斯的演艺生涯一落千丈，没人找他录音，没人去听他的演唱会。他开始酗酒，得了严重的抑郁症，于1976年4月9日在家中上吊自杀，年仅36岁。
