MY DIGEST 1
Today I want to recommend a book called "The Closing of the American Mind".This book mainly argues about something on new generations and rises a series of responsibilities of universities .
The author of this book Allan Bloom (1930-1992),raised in a Jewish family .He moved to Chicago in 1944 with his family and attended University of Chicago in his 15,25 got the doctor degree of Social Thought. He has been teaching in Ivy League. And this book is the most impressive one of his works.
Now let's enjoy the wonderful sentences and specific ideas splited by the author.
I picked up some sentences to share
1.students these days are pleasant ,friendly and,if not greatsouled,at least not particularly mean-spirited.their primary preoccupation is themselves, understood in the narrowest sense...
2.the affairs of daily life rarely involve concern for a lager community in such a way as to make the public and private merge in one's thought .It is not merely that one is free to paricipate or not participate, that there is no need to do so,but that everything militates against one's doing so.
3.this indeterminate or open-ended future and the lack of a binding past mean that the souls of young people are in a condtion like that of the first men in the state of nature-----spiritually unclad unconnected isolated with no inherited or unconditional connection with anything or anyone. They can be anything they want to be,but they have no particular reson to want to be anything in particular...There is no necessity ,no going in or turning away from any of these directions and there are desires pointing toward each, with mutually contradictory arguments to buttress them. Why are we surprised that such unfurnished persons should be preoccupied principally with themselves and with finding means to aviod permanent free fall?No wonders that the one novel that remains continuously popular with students is Camus's "The Stranger"
