This is a reply to both of your question and the Time article.
1. I guess one day you'll get used to seeing Douban on international media. It's no big deal.
2. We love diversity. Douban has a lively gay and lesbian subculture, it is an important part of our larger community. We are proud and grateful, always have been, always will be. That does not make Douban a "gay community" per se, but again, no big deal.
3. Douban's team has its own principles and values, these have not changed much over the years. But we have learned to be pragmatic, mostly for our users' sake, sometimes for our own. We made compromises, some of which we were not proud of, some of which kept us quiet when explanations were badly needed. These did leave a gap that is easily filled with misunderstandings and ill feelings, usually benign, occasionally not. We learn as we go, try to do a better job each time. And sometimes we just move on. We love our users, and I think in the long run, they'll know.
