Homosexuality Themed Films
![]() |
Homosexuality is a ubiquitous basic behavior pattern that exists in every historical period and can be seen in different cultures. People in different eras and cultures turn different attitudes towards the homosexuality; inevitably, art consciousness can’t turn its back on it.
The homosexuality themed films can be seen as early as in the silent film period, but during the early years when Hollywood films were strictly reviewed, the gay and lesbian theme was prohibited strongly. After then, the homosexuality themed films were generally accepted by publics and experts, and even have won some big awards in international film festivals from time to time.
Always these kind of films are destined to be tragedies because their love can not be accepted by conventional publics, and they always probe into big topics like Life and Death, Love and Hate, Body and Soul, Freedom and Order, Brief and Eternal.
Here Let’s take a look at some of these homosexuality films.
The first one is <Brokeback Mountain>Click here
It was adapted according to a short novel of Anne Proulx, who is an American author. Set in Wyoming, America, the film tells a story about 2 American Cowboys fall in love with each other, but under social pressure, they have to marry to the women they don’t love, have children. and lead a ordinary life. From Teenage year to middle-aged year, their complex love continued for about 20 years. Some entertainment media regard this film as an epic for homosexuality themed films. The director Ang Lee:; however, doesn’t agree to the idea that <Brokeback Mountain> should be confined into a homosexuality themed film, instead he thinks that it is a film about generalized love but not specialized love for only between men or only between women.
The last scene of the film is thought to be very moving, Jack died in the end, and Ennis wraps his clothes around Jack’s clothes, which means he will always love Jack.
The next film I’m going to talk about is <Philadelphia> Click here
<Philadelphia> is a 1993 American drama film and one of the first mainstream Hollywood films to acknowledge HIV/AIDS, homosexuality, and homophobia.
The protagonist is a homosexual lawyer who is fired because he has contracted HIV/AIDS, and at the end he wins himself justice by appealing to the laws. It’s not a complex story, but it aroused a moral question to the world-----what attitudes should we hold towards homosexuals? In this level, it is a great film. <Philadelphia> promoted Hollywood’s observation towards the real existence of homosexuality.
The film stars Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington, and Tom Hanks won the Academy Award for Best Actor because his excellent performance in this film.
The third film is a Chinese film called <Farewell to My Concubine> Click here
This is very interesting when you consider that the story takes place in Peking Opera, not other ordinary places. Before release, this film was banned, removed, and banned and removed over and over again because it is related to the over-debating issue that whether or not it is proper to be released to the publics; however, the power of the film was not missed through the setbacks.
The leading role Guorang Zhang, as we all know, who was a homosexual in real life, died in 2003, 9 years ago.
The trying of putting homosexuality theme into films was thought very good because it is like a mirror, through which we can have a clear picture of the contemporary society.
Tolerance may be the best attitude towards it, since it exists, just let it be.
