Bath reaches new high of 3rd in The Sunday Times University Guide

The University of Bath has been ranked as the third best university in the UK in the new edition of The Sunday Times University Guide.
This is the University’s highest ever ranking in the guide and means that only Oxford and Cambridge now sit above it in the table of 126 UK universities and colleges.
This accolade recognises Bath’s all-round excellence, encompassing a range of aspects of research, teaching, employability and the student experience, and follows on from the University being named ‘University of the Year 2011/12’ last year.
Published in the paper this weekend (Sunday 30 September), the guide will also rank universities’ performance by the individual subjects they teach.
In these tables the University of Bath has also excelled, coming top in no fewer than three subjects: Architecture, Mechanical Engineering and Business Studies. Again, only Oxford and Cambridge come higher in more subject tables than Bath.
Professor Dame Glynis Breakwell, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bath, said: “This is a fantastic achievement for Bath. We have enjoyed being University of the Year for the past 12 months but in many ways this surpasses that honour.
“To be ranked third in the UK confirms the research and teaching excellence that takes place here, and clearly demonstrates the high quality, distinctive student experience we offer.
“To do this before we have even reached our 50th anniversary is no mean feat.
“I am immensely proud of the dedication and enthusiasm of our staff and students. We are committed to excellence in all that we do and as a result continue to attract academic high-flyers from across the UK and internationally.
The guide’s league table is compiled using a number of criteria including student satisfaction, research quality, academic peer review, entrance qualifications held by new students, degree results achieved, dropout rates and graduate employment levels.
In its 15th year of publication and with a readership of three million, the newspaper’s guide provides both a British university league table as well as profiles of all the UK’s higher education institutions.
Professor Dame Breakwell added: “This news comes just days after the National Student Survey ranked our students as being amongst the most satisfied students in the UK, and continues an outstanding year of success and achievement for the University.
“Earlier this month we celebrated with the rest of the city of Bath the achievements of 11 Olympic and Paralympic medallists amongst students and alumni, and back in February we were awarded a Queen’s Anniversary prize for Further and Higher Education for our research.”
