To have a hissy fit
Mary: Did you see Conchita after the dancing contest?
Janine: Not right after, but a bit later. I could see she was in a really bad mood.
Mary: She was a lot worse when the results were announced. She had a hissy fit when she learned that she and her partner hadn\'t won.
Janine: I\'m not surprised. She never likes losing and she always blames somebody else.
Mary: Yes, she kicked her partner in the ankle and said it was his fault, poor guy.
Janine: Well they\'re not going to be dancing together for much longer if that\'s how she behaves.
康奇塔見自己沒有獲獎,大發脾氣﹕She had a hissy fit。Fit作名詞,指疾病或強烈感情的「發作」,例如﹕(1) He fell to the floor in an epileptic fit(他癲癇症發作,倒在地上)。(2) She wept in a fit of remorse(她十分懊悔,哭了起來)。To have/throw a fit則是「勃然大怒」的意思,和to have/throw a hissy fit沒有什麼分別,例如﹕He threw a (hissy) fit when he found out what had been done to his computer(他發覺電腦給弄成那個樣子,勃然大怒)。To have/throw a hissy fit是較通俗的說法,多用於口頭。
Hiss作動詞,指「發出嘶嘶聲」,例如﹕The cat, driven into a corner, turned and hissed at the children(那隻貓被趕進角落,轉身向孩子發出嘶嘶聲)。Hiss這種聲音,往往表示不滿,所以「發出噓聲」也可說to hiss,例如﹕The crowd booed and hissed at the Chief Executive when he appeared(行政長官一現身,人群就噓聲四起)。
留意blame解作「怪責」,是及物動詞(transitive verb),其後須有受詞(object);不過,要說「某人應受責備」或「是某人的錯」,卻須說somebody is to blame,不可說somebody is blamed或somebody is to be blamed。請比較以下兩句﹕(1) I blamed myself for the accident(我為這意外事故自責)。(2) I was to blame for the accident(發生這意外事故,是我的錯)。
