Tim Burton is one of the most famous filmmakers of the century. What makes him different from the other filmmakers is his unique style. The atmosphere of Tim Burton’s films is Gothic, dark and the viewer gets the feeling of death and darkness. Tim Burton has successfully worked in both animated films and motion pictures. Actually, Tim Burton’s animated films are all in stop motion technique.
Tim Burton was born in Burbank, California on 25th of August 1958. He studied animation in California Institute of the Arts. After completing his studies in 1979, he began working in Disney Animation Studios. His first assignment was on “The Fox and the Hound” which was released in 1981.He worked as an animator as well as a concept artist. During the years he was working in Disney Studios he met Rick Heinrichs with whom is collaborating until today. Tim Burton worked in Disney Studios for four years.
One of his most famous short animations is Vincent (1982), narrated by the actor Vincent Price. Tim Burton became famous after his direction of the films “Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure” (1985), “Beetlejuice” (1988) and “Batman” (1989). Furthermore, in 1990 he released the famous classic film “Edward Scissorhands”, an all time favourite movie starring Johnny Depp. Additionally, Tim Burton has directed, and produced many marvellous films including stop motion animated films in the last two decades like “The Nightmare Before Christmas” in 1993 (directed by Henry Selick), “Corpse Bride” (2005), “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” (2005) and “Sweeney Todd the demon barber of Fleet Street” (2007) and his latest release “Alice in Wonderland” in 2010. During all these years he had collaborated with the famous actor Johnny Depp seven times, and the long waited “Dark Shadows” will be their 8th collaboration. Recently, Tim Burton exhibited his artwork at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York (November 2009 – April 2011).
I have chosen Tim Burton because, apart from the fact that he has always been my favourite director, I admire him as a filmmaker and as an artist. In my opinion, his work is unique. Moreover, he defined a whole other genre of filmmaking. He became the representative of Gothic and dark movies of the 21st century. He introduced in the filmmaking area, films with moody, dark and sinister atmosphere. Moreover, his films are more artistic in contrast with films by other filmmakers, maybe because of the fact that, Tim Burton has been an artist his whole life. His films are like paintings and drawings, and you can see their exceptionality.
What’s more, I strongly believe that Tim Burton will be good for analysis because of his extraordinary filmmaking and his different points of view, which reflect in many of his films. In conclusion, I think that I will really enjoy examining him and his work because I have always wanted to focus quite deeply in Tim Burton’s work and learn even more about him.
