The music legend beat Queen Elizabeth I to the title
The music icon beat the likes of Queen Elizabeth I, Henry III and 17th century diarist Samuel Pepys to the title, which was voted for by a poll in BBC History Magazine.
Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire; and Beau Brummell, a dandy icon who is said to have spent six hours a day getting ready were also contenders for the accolade.
Fashion designer Wayne Hemingway, who voted for Bowie in the poll, said: "Here was a creative genius who understood art and design, looked cool, inspired us and upset the establishment. All these attributes lead to things that drive humankind forward… change."
The poll featured 4,067 votes on the BBC History Magazine website.
