One of the advantages of investing in EB-5 as a way to obtain citizenship instead of other naturalization programs worldwide is:
(1) Cost. Some of the lowest minimum investment amounts compared to other programs worldwide.
(2)Popularity and stability. This program has been in place since 1990 and its producing visible results in the U.S. economy making it hard to see this coming to an end.
(3)Results. Chinese nationals account for more than 80% of visas issued, compared to just 13% a decade ago, according to government data compiled by CNNMoney. That translates to nearly 6,900 visas for Chinese nationals last year, a massive bump up from 2004, when only 16 visas were granted to Chinese.
(4)The principle will be returned to the investor upon receiving their Green Card in addition to interest (dependent on how risky the investment was).
To this last point, we want to clarify and reiterate that the EB-5 Program is based in part on the fact that the United States economy will benefit from an immigrant’s contribution of capital. It is also based on the view that the benefit to the U.S. economy is greatest when the capital is committed to a job-creating commercial enterprise and placed at risk. The regulations that govern the EB-5 Program define the terms “at risk” by stating that no capital investment projects are backed or guaranteed by the government. Furthermore, there are no guarantees that an investor may ultimately be granted non-conditional permanent resident status through an EB-5 investment. For example, if it is determined that the investor’s money is not truly at risk or that insufficient jobs were created through the investment, then the investor’s petition may be denied. Investors should exercise due diligence when making an EB-5 investment.
Many firms are trying to lure investors with high interest returns, or projects that are just too good to be true. Be wary. Many of these firms are not experienced in EB-5 specific investments, they might be great opportunities and reputable sources but they are not experts with EB-5 nuances. There is also the problem with fake or non-approved projects that fail to have permits or final agreements in place. EB-5 petition filings and all the details that are involved with your application should be handled by an expert EB-5 investment group. You might have found a great project but if it’s not presented in the correct format with the true and applicable data it will take you nowhere. Here are the top 4 questions we recommend asking prior to making your investment
What other projects have you completed? Ask for examples.
How many of your company’s projects, if any, have defaulted?
What is the interest return, if any, associated with this project?
How many EB-5 investments has your company managed?
What is your approval rates?
What are the management fees of the investment interest?
After reading the above statement, investors tend to think twice about the commitment of funds, that is why Ameritas and its partners have never had a project default, we only select investments that are overcollateralize, by that we mean the investments are as secureas one could make them. Additionally, we only partner with large scale firms and tend to recommend real-estate and rarely business projects (again this depends on the level of risk the investor wants to take). Reputation is all in this business; our company’s success is tied to our clients’ satisfaction.
