標題的一句簡單說話，有否令你猜到今天介紹哪本I字首的名著？不錯，是Invisible Man。但英語文學中有兩本著名小說都有類似名字，較為人熟悉的可能是英國科幻小說家威爾斯（HG Wells，1866-1946）的The Invisible Man（《隱形人》，有The）。另一本雖較少人認識，但文學與社會價值更高，一些評論家更讚揚是二次大戰以來最偉大的小說，它是由美國黑人作家艾里森（Ralph Ellison，1914-1994）所寫的Invisible Man（《看不見的人》，沒The）。

HG Wells的隱形人，顧名思義是肉眼看不見的。但Ralph Ellison書中的「看不見的人」，則本身並非隱形。故事主人公沒名沒姓，開首便這樣解釋自己為何是invisible man：
