《音乐之声》里这首著名的“雪绒花”借欧洲阿尔卑斯山脉特有的高山火绒草（俗称雪绒花）抒发上校的爱国、坚韧、柔情。
欧洲阿尔卑斯山脉、比利牛斯山山脉、喀尔巴阡山脉1400-3500米海拔高度上生长的高山火绒草（Leontopodium alpinum）
是菊科（Compositae）火绒草属（Leontopodium）的一个亚种。而火绒草的亚种有几十个。
在我们身边比较著名的除了“雪绒花”之外还有北京周边海拔1500-2400米山地的绢茸火绒草（Leontopodium smithianum），其花朵形状与欧洲阿尔卑斯山特有的高山火绒草（Leontopodium alpinum）比较接近。
日本生长的薄雪火绒草（Leontopodium japonicum）平均生长海拔较低（1000-2000米）。
云南西北部常见的火绒草有如下品种：
