Tim Draper

Draper University of Heroes: by the time you graduate, you are a hero
by Jane Li
In Jan. when I was at Draper University of Heroes, I wrote an article with much enthusiasm, wanting the world to know how great it is. I titled it "Part I", to show that there's more to come.
Then half a year went by.
Many things happened in between. I won, by far, the vibrator sales competition; I cried at an experience sharing event; I survived in wilderness, I lift the roof off a building with my DU fellows.
I even had someone investing in my idea.
It felt like a slow yet succinct violin piece. You kept forging ahead, surrounded by friends. It was crowded but left just the right amount of space for you, letting you keeping your own pace. You kept forging ahead, and when you stop to take a break, you were surprised to see that you have climbed over a mountain. The people you passed, all the things from the past, you left them at the other side of the mountain.
You hear them yelling at the other side: good luck! Good luck!
When you graduate, you are a hero.
Tim Draper said at graduation: I want to apologize. You could have had a more stable, more normal life, a good job, a good marriage, eat and sleep and exercise. But you can't now, because you are heroes. You have a mission. You need to solve a problem.
This is a story that has been told many times. Before Draper University, I worked for 7 years at a university, had a stable salary, living a repetitive life. I had the same confusion and frustration and feeling of helplessness like everyone else. I only wanted a break, at the other end of the world, where people would smile at me when I head out in the morning.
Heroes? It never crossed my mind.
But now I am flying back to my end of the world. I am going to solve a problem. Because he said, you are a hero!
I quit my job. I raised funding, built a team, designed a product. I went head first into the most exciting game there is. Spinning, up and down. There is no time to think. I am changing every moment. I learned a new way to talk; I am meeting entirely different people. I am playing a new role. Life changed. There is so much happening in one day, that when I went to bed at the end of the day, yesterday felt like last summer.
Years ago, my meditation teacher would instruct me to think of a place that's comfortable, imagine myself being there. I always thought of the room of my childhood. It had tall windows. At the time someone gave me a tomato plant as a gift. Everyday I fell asleep, I hoped that by the time I woke up, the tomato would have grown over my side of the wall, covering the tall windows.
Winter came before the tomato had the chance to sprout more than a few leaves. But it was a beautiful time, because everyday I fell asleep with hope.
It's a beautiful time now. When I was driving home in the middle of the night, when I was hacking together a quick meal, when my head was hurting, I think of the time at DU, I think of when I couldn't help laughing after a night out with Adi, half drunk; I think of jumping into the sea in pouring raining; I think of walking over blocks after blocks to get some ribs; I think of laying on bean bags trying to stay awake and praying that I wouldn't be thrown into the pool. All of these thoughts gave me strength somehow.
It's like at the other side of the mountain, there are all these people that love you. You can't see them, and they can't see you. But you know they are there, and you are comfortable in your own skin.
It's a hard journey ahead, but I am forging on with hope.
