A young, East German couple makes a fatal decision. It is the time just before the fall of the Berlin Wall, when they try to escape into Austria via Hungary, whose new Prime Minister Miklós Neméth has shortly before opened the border to the East to save money on the border control. But powerful forces deep inside the Communist Party want things to be otherwise. Neméth is plunged into a political storm, and the young couple is caught in a fatal crossfire at the border – a tragic event, which paradoxically ends up accelerating the final demise of the wall. Anders Østergaard ('Burma VJ', 'Tintin et moi') has created a historical epic, where the international power game in 1989 is portrayed in dramatic reconstructions, archival footage and interviews. But where one of history's forgotten tragedies, which was buried in the rubble of the fallen wall, is dusted off and reminds us that historical change always has a human cost. And that it is the small coincidences that can ultimately change the course of history.

Baltimore, 1972: Henry Selhorst, father of thirteen children, is murdered blocks from his home by three young men. Decades later his granddaughter Emily Topper tries to find out what really happened that fatal day. Racism, is what people said back then. But is that really all there was to it? 'All Fall Down' is a deeply personal detective story from a city where the relationship between black and white has a troubled history - and where the truth is nonetheless never black and white. Although Emily meets both the policemen that were first on the crime scene, and actually manages to seek out the men accused of the murder, every new testimonial only adds another perspective on the case. And her attempt to piece the puzzles together into a coherent picture is not made easier by the years that have passed, or by the fact that much has disappeared or been suppressed in the fog of collective memory. But in the meantime 'All Fall Down' turns into a phantom portrait of a missing man that Emily herself never really got to know - and of very special family.

Approaching the Elephant
A radical experiment quickly develops into something both chaotic and dramatic at a small American free school. The whole school is the experiment. Here, children and teachers have equal say in an antiauthoritarian attempt at direct democracy. Anarchy lurks in every scene. But the children are smart and articulate, and have clear views about community. And so do the young and idealistic teachers. But a single, unruly child is all it takes to make everything falter. Will the experiment with the free reins succeed? 'We will only know in twenty years', a teacher sighs at a critical moment. He appears to have his own reasons to have gambled everything on a democratic school, where the pupils can learn what they want, when they want to - and if they want to. 'Approaching the Elephant' follows the first year of the small free school. Each image buzzes with an almost electric energy, and Amanda Rose Wilder's attentive camera captures it all in vital and beautiful black and white images. The format is reminiscent of the American tradition of the 1960s, but is more than a formal homage. The first free schools were founded as alternatives to the classic (and class divided) school system, which educated the children of workers to spend a life in the factory. And at a time when the school system is in a crisis, this is an opportunity to consider a completely different way of doing things.

I Want to See the Manager
After one look at our planet, any visitor from outer space would immediately ask to see the manager. So wrote William S. Burroughs in his time, and here is a film that examines if his words still stand. Wide-ranging, ambitious and with the cool gaze of an anthropologist from another planet, it accompanies us around in a world that is at once declining, progressing and constantly undergoing change. From India's slums and Bolivian lithium mines to the megapolis Beijing and the United States, where a scientist argues that death will cease to exist in the 21st century thanks to modern technology. The economic 'glocalisation' is a phenomenon with many strange faces, but Hannes Lang's film is also a reminder of the fact that change is basically due to people with dreams, hopes and fears - and with a not always rational way to realise their plans. Seven countries, seven chapters - and seven occasions to look at ourselves from the outside in a film that has its gaze directed towards an unknown future.

Scenario
A sultry romance between a married man and his young secretary in 1970s Cologne is revealed down to the smallest detail and with absurd scientific precision in 'Scenario', which with an extremely conscious form and bone-dry irony comments on the act of 'documenting'. The discovery of a black suitcase filled with notes, receipts and a tape recording where the man himself kept a diary of the affair, is arranged as evidence. But can pure facts tell us what actually happened? Or is reality in fact a wavering between the real and the possible? Times and positions of intercourse, the average age of unmarried women in Cologne, demographic data and all other imaginable forms of data are presented in an objective and completely passionless order. An analogue report, illustrated in grey and brown by 16mm images in the extremely style-conscious, structuralist tradition. Philip Widmann and Karsten Krause's film work is more than a phenomenal historical document of the times. In a present where the vast collection of data has become an end in itself for both governments and businesses, 'Scenario' is a critical and understated witty commentary on the modern 'will to knowledge'. Then like now, the irony is evident: everything is under control, except the meaning of it all.

Storm Children - Book One
Lav Diaz is one of the most radical and visionary filmmaker of our times. His brand new film - following the Locarno winner 'From What Is Before' - is a documentary, but one in a league of its own. And while his films easily run for between six and eleven hours, this one ticks in just on the other side of two! A storm has left a city on the coast in a state of post-apocalyptic chaos. Stranded in Canton
Lebrun has travelled from Congo to Guangzhou to buy cheap t-shirts for a campaign for a presidential election in his home country. But the goods are delayed, the election is over, and Lebrun is now in a fix, as he has to pay his sweaty Lebanese contact. Stranded on an expired visa, lost - and in love! Lebrun whiles away time at karaoke bars in the megapolis's neon-coloured underworld, and in the company of his friend, who runs a beauty salon, while he hatches a plan for the useless t-shirts with a presidential candidate, who might get another chance in 2016. The Swedish artist Måns Månsson has placed a fictional character in a real environment to explore the fascinating new relationship that has arisen between Africa and China, where democracy is one commodity among many others. No dialogue is written in advance, and the minimal story about the worthless t-shirts is just an excuse to conduct a cinematic experiment set in the Chinese city, where tens of thousands of African migrants are in the process of establishing themselves and creating a new life, in a historical parallel to the exchange that has always taken place between East and West. But this time, the West is not invited to the party. However, the reference to the lost souls in the American photographer William Eggleston's film of the same name suggests a tragicomic and existential absurdity, which is independent of time and place.

The Fortune You Seek Is In Another Cookie
From the silence among mummies in a Chilean desert to youth street riots in Istanbul, the occupied Cinecittà film studios in Rome and a demonstration in Chile. Like a flaneur who sees the world with the poetic gaze of an outsider, the film's nameless narrator travels around the world in search of happiness. Not as a sentimental feeling of pleasure, but as an idea and practice, which nonetheless turns out to be just as volatile as the images that his buzzing 16mm camera capture in beautiful and gritty scenes. Images that turn their back on him, but which through visions and encounters and with a silent fury initiate him (and us) to a fundamental, human search for meaning, cohesion, knowledge and freedom. It could easily have become a pretentious affair, but Johannes Gierlinger turns the abstract concepts upside down in a politically down-to-earth film, which above all is about resistance. His debut, 'The Fortune You Seek is in Another Cookie' is a dizzying experience in the essayistic tradition of Chris Marker and the early explorers. A film for anyone who yearns to see the world anew.

Beyond Zero: 1914-1918
The 100 year old film images sparkle and crackle with an expressive fury, which almost looks like a reaction to what they depict. This year, it is 100 year since the First World War - the first 'modern' war, and the first to be documented in moving images - forever destroyed any notion of the (Western) world's continued progress under the banner of reason and industrialisation. 1914 was the modern era's absolute year zero. A landmark year, which is here marked in a cinematic collaboration between the renowned American filmmaker Bill Morrison and the string quartet Kronos Quartet, who have recorded the original score by the Serbian composer Aleksandra Vrebalov. For over a decade, Morrison has specialised in bringing early film footage back to the cinema - often in a state where the film reels physical foundation is in a state of dissolution, which gives the images a literally unique cinematic feel that simply must be experienced. 'Beyond Zero: 1914 - 1918' consists entirely of archive footage that is presented naked and without explanatory text or speech, and Morrison's special methods lift the never-before-seen footage from the devastating war to downright dizzying heights, as lost figures trudge through scarred landscapes towards a certain death - shrouded in a thundering, photochemical inferno of scratches, dents, flashing lights and blurred bubbles.

The French star artist Laure Prouvost's brand new work with the promising title 'How to Make Money Religiously' is a conceptual 'memory game': two versions of the same film are presented in succession, the second time in a slightly alternative version, which invites you to consider the relationship between memory, communication and subjectivity at a time when all three of them are massively challenged by a constant stream of information - and marketing. Like an advertisement for a product and a lifestyle that might not even be for sale, Prouvost's work lures us wit promises of luxury and easy money. Knowing full well that the entire system is dependent on selling needs that can never be fulfilled, and that illusion - to use Oscar Wilde's immortal words - is the first of all pleasures. In a fragmented and mischievous collage of extracts, the recent Turner Prize winner Prouvost confronts us with our own role as consumers and members of highly segmented target groups, to which we belong without being aware of it. Things
The British film magician and CPH:DOX friend Ben Rivers is a director, who has primarily explored geographic and ethnographic outskirts of our civilisation. In 'Things', he embarks on a reverse expedition and turns the camera on his own home. The film unfolds as a local chronology, where Rivers's small London apartment of rooms, objects and archival accumulations of photographs and film strips are examined like a trip into the director's private space. Inspired by the experimental French 'nouveau roman' and George Perec's novel 'Les Choses' (1965), Rivers delivers a cinematic homage to the curious, descriptive approach to the things that surround us. The film is organised as a seasonal suite within the walls of the home and consists of four chapters, which begin in winter and end in autumn. The four parts are composed as different thematic and stylistic ways of documenting what is close to us, appropriately shot in Rivers's favourite, analogue 16mm format. But 'Things' is also a film, where Rivers apparently and for the first time includes digital processing in his work in the shape of a hyper-realistic 3D rendering of his own apartment. At least until you look more closely.

Cutaways
Scenes and characters that are cut right out of a film (and out of film history) before the film is completed, do not cease to exist. They live on as phantoms in an imaginary no-man's land, a landfill of images and narratives. Three of these characters and stories cross paths in 'Cutaways'. A scene from the road movie classic 'Vanishing Point', which was taken out because it was too strange. A superfluous supporting character from 'The Conversation', and a scene from 'Pulp Fiction', which was thrown out because the film was too long. Charlotte Rampling, Abe Vigoda and Dick Miller themselves (re)play the never-seen roles that they had in the original films, before they were finally cut out. They meet 'on the road', an arch-American setting, which is rich in promises of drama, suspense and cinematic feasts for the eyes. But what starts out as just that - an evocative, mysterious and above all 'cinematic' setup - paradoxically ends up as a text-based anti-film, which follows its own point all the way through by insisting that the whole film is actually a part of the work - always. Even that part of the film we otherwise often voluntarily 'edit out' by leaving the screening theatre. Agnieszka Kurant's latest work has been created in collaboration with the master editor Walter Murch, and it is a film where the otherwise neutral cinema space for once actually becomes a part of the work itself.

What is left if you take the passion out of melodrama? The long answer is: tacky muzak, cheap video effects, a bloody knife, rumours of murder, and above all unmotivated behaviour. The short answer is Keren Cytter's 'Siren'. The latest video work by the extremely prolific artist, who can also be experienced as Artist in Focus at this year's CPH:DOX, is named after a song by Tim Buckley playing on a YouTube channel in the background while a passionless romance plays out between two people over a dating site. As so often in Cytter's films, romance is also here associated with inexplicable violence. But who actually is murdered and why (and when, and by whom) remains unclear. 'Siren' is most of all a study in human behaviour, when all standards of psychological realism and emotional authenticity are done away with. The drama is decorated by computer-animated sunflowers, 'for your viewing pleasure'.

Everything That Rises Must Converge
The shoot of a professional porn film somewhere in the United States and an elliptical and enigmatic jealousy story are the core of the visual artist Omer Fast's latest work, which in a suggestive use of split-screen suggests parallels between two different ways of seeing. From ambiguous realism to the easily most popular of all documentary genres: porn, which is produced on an assembly line in an industry that is becoming increasingly mainstream. The work takes place over the course of a single day - from the film's four sex actors get up and get ready to 'go to work' until the day is over. In an interview, the porn film's producer shares his opinion about the industry, which is as dirty as it is clinically sterile, complete with alarm clocks, electronic cigarettes and the neat shaving of genitals. In and around the same house that the film is being shot, a parallel romance is taking place: a film noir in Californian daylight, with an artificiality that colours the otherwise so immediate documentation of the day's events in the house. The duality is encapsulated in the work's title, which comes from a short story by the Catholic writer Flannery O'Connor about shame, fate and remorse.

Journey to the West
As always, time itself is the real protagonist in Tsai Ming-Liang's films, and if you bring along both your patience and your senses to the cinema, 'Journey to the West' is one of the richest film experiences you will have in years. A man (Denis Lavant) wanders in the footsteps of a Buddhist monk (Lee Kang-Sheng), who walks in almost motionless slow-motion through an otherwise busy Marseilles. The smallest details in the image acquire a life and soul as one's gaze invited inside Tsai's refined compositions. The motif of a red-robed monk slowly descending a staircase bathed in dusty sunlight from the street above him will stay with you for a long time. But the situation itself is a simple, but radically interventionist gesture, which evokes highly different responses among random passers-by. Tsai Ming-Liang's latest film work once again emphasises that he is one of the most original and innovative filmmakers of the past twenty years. After several years spent working parallel to his features with shorter video works, several of which have been screening at CPH:DOX, he last year announced that the feature film 'Stray Dogs' would be his last. But one can only hope that he will continue to pursue his opus in films like this one.

Moments of Silence
Mr and Mrs Obama on the anniversary of 9/11, fans of Michael Jackson on his birthday and people gathered in the memory of those who died in the earthquake in Japan in 2011. The Swedish artist duo Bigert & Bergström has created an archive-based montage of situations from around the world and at different times, where people have gathered in a seemingly universal gesture: to hold a moment of silence. A ceremonial form of exceptional circumstances, where the machinery of society is allowed to stand still for a moment, and where the narratives that any community is built up around stands out all the more strongly by virtue of being unspoken. But 'Moments of Silence' is not just a strikingly accurate study of the way in which we collectively deal with loss and trauma, but also a reminder of the importance of maintaining a common memory of the historical turning points, that always seem to happen when you least expect them.

Reduit
Fearful of what he imagined to be an imminent Soviet invasion, the farmer Karl-Göran Persson started to fortify his small house in southern Sweden with layer upon layer of iron and cement to protect himself and his neighbours. An architectural project which today stands on a deserted field as a tragic monument to a historical period's great political crisis, but also as a physical reproduction of Persson's own inner state - a dark and labyrinthine realisation of his increasing obsession and impotence, which John Skoog maps out in slow movements. The eerie melancholy and shady spaces of the house are reproduced in leaden images, shot on 35mm celluloid, while local voices on the soundtrack involve us in their own memories of how they as children experienced Persson. 'Reduit' is the latest of a series of short films, in which Skoog deals with the relationship between the special Swedish landscape and modern history that inscribes itself in it. Karl-Göran Persson continued to build his house, and lived there alone until his death in 1975.

Subconscious Society
The ruins of a post-industrial society's dreams rise up along the misty English coasts like relics from a possible future, which has long gone down in history without ever having realised its utopian potential. Rosa Barba's monumentally ambitious 35mm film work 'Subconscious Society' is a piece of documentary science fiction, where the grandiose architecture plays the lead role. From the rusty, man-made structures in Kent to the abandoned Methodist church Albert Hall in Manchester where a mysterious group of people meet in a ritual community, suggesting that a new form of society may be in its infancy. Barba's visionary film continues the motifs from her earlier works in a contemporary artistic study of industrialisation's modern history, utopian theory and the possibilities of performance art. 'Subconscious Society' has previously been exhibited as an installation, most recently at the Berlin Biennale this summer, but can here for the first time be experienced in a cinema.

Echo Chamber
A railcar moves along the rusty railroads through jungles and tropical landscapes, while a distant radio trumpets forth an apocalyptic weather forecast: a (natural) disaster is looming. With few and simple means, the Columbian artist Guillermo Moncayo has created a disturbing and trance-inducing film, which reaches far beyond itself. The railway is a subject that not only has a film-historical resonance in the modernist tradition, but is also the symbol of a former, heavy-industrial conquest and exploitation of earth's natural resources. A time and a practice whose days are numbered, even if its remnants still cut through the countryside and rusts like fossils on the surface of the earth. The railcar turns out to be mounted on a motorcycle driven by a young man, who is journeying on a hypnotic field trip through the territories of the possible, and night gradually falls. Moncayo is a graduate of the French film and art school Le Fresnoy, and with 'Echo Chamber' he has created a subtle and ethnographic film, that does not settle with just relating to what is real, but also has the courage to anticipate that which is coming.

The Lanthanide Series
The myth of a so-called 'black mirror', which consists of nature's rarest elements and is an occult tool to see into the future, exists across cultures and ages. A fascinating, historical connection between science, art, politics and poetry, on which the American researcher and film director Erin Espelie has created a subtle cinematic essay where every chapter is based on an element in the periodic table. It is the search of new knowledge that the various disciplines gather around the mysterious black mirror: already in the 17th century, painters such as Claude Lorrain used a similar instrument in their efforts to reproduce natural scenes as accurately as possible. And the charting of the potential of the elements is a polyhistoric project with both industrial, scientific and alchemical perspectives. 'The Lanthanide Series' is a deeply original work, which wittily exploits the freedom of art to suggest hitherto unimagined relations. For knowledge is power, and the myth of unlimited access to all the world's knowledge still exists: the entire film is shot as a reflection of the screen of a defunct tablet computer - the black mirror of our times.

A Cup of Tea
Gunnar is in the midst of a mid-life crisis, has stomach ulcers and suffers the stress of modern life. So he decides to build a teahouse after a Japanese model in the deep, quiet tranquility in the middle of the Norwegian woods, where he can enjoy a cup of tea and meditate on life in solitude. And when a real man first has an idea, then the damn thing has to be turned into reality - even if it is far out in the forest! But he is not entirely on his own. For out under the pine treetops he has both the help and company of three introverted recluses: a farmer with a heartache, a carpenter with a heart problem and a depressed moose hunter. It turns out, however, that building a suitable retreat according to all the rules of 'wabi-sabi' is a challenge in itself (see the film and you will understand what we mean!). The minimalist, Japanese tea ceremony should ideally take place in a ramshackle hut built of old wood to remind its guests of the transience of life. The humour, the magnificent beauty of the forests and the existential soul-searching are unmistakably Nordic, in a wry and philosophical docu-comedy shot in true wabi-sabi style on everything from super-8 to GoPro, while an ironic narrator gleefully comments on the events from a radio studio.

Between Rings
Esther Phiri has literally had to fight to carve out an independent life on her own terms. In her native Zambia, the seven-time world champion in boxing became an icon for anyone who had dreams in life that were different from the ones that traditions had created for them. And in 'Between Rings' we understand why: she is a deeply charismatic woman with the courage of her convictions. And she can knock anybody out! Esther first renounced her education to support her family. But since then she has also renounced the expectations of marriage and family to invest in her meteoric career as a boxer. With success comes pressure, jealousy and criticism - especially outside the ring. In the wrong hands, this film could have been a predictable and sentimental story, but the Finnish/Zambian directors Salla Sorri & Jessie Chisi have created an exceptionally realistic film, which avoids politically correct clichés in favour of a portrait that makes space for the contrasts, conflicts and inner tensions that are also a part of Esther Phiri's story. And finally, you can only have the greatest respect for her tenacity and courage - and for how infinitely much she had to fight for.

Out of Norway
Emanuel fled to Norway from Liberia many years ago. Now he wants to return but the bureaucracy says no, even if he is neither allowed to work nor have an education. So Emanuel must once again take the trip as an illegal refugee, this time in the other direction. An absurd process which he documents himself in a video diary, that has now become an independent film. So far, there is nothing new about a film director leaving the camera to his main character, so that he or she can document their own situation 'from the inside'. But 'Out of Norway' is not as simple as it seems. Emanuel was a walking mystery in the Norwegian artist Thomas Østbye's previous film 'Imagining Emanuel', a mischievous and self-reflexive (meta)film which constantly undermined everything we thought we knew. But this time we get the story from Emanuel himself. And part of the story is the fact that his false exit papers were paid for with money that Thomas Østbye won for 'Imagining Emanuel' at CPH:DOX in 2011! The form is possibly (but only possibly) more authentic here. When Emanuel stares back at you, the doubt still lingers.

Pervert Park
Florida Justice Transitions looks like any other American trailer park. Only discreet electronic ankle tags and sporadic vandalism bear witness to the fact that the residents are all convicted sex offenders. From misdemeanours to monstrous crimes. And in a state with tough laws, this means in practice that the inhabitants are condemned to a life in isolation from society. The park's residents are left to themselves to find out what comes after crime and punishment. The debut directing couple Frida & Lasse Barkfors take us behind the invisible fence of stigmatisation, lend a human face to an outcast community of demonised sex offenders - and forces us to take sides in a moral dilemma, which is more profound and complex than one possibly feels like being reminded of. For no matter whether the residents themselves are victims, one inevitably asks oneself if there are some things that can not - or should not ? - be forgiven. 'Pervert Park' is a sensitive and intimate film with a diabolic sense of not letting us off lightly when it comes to its inflamed topic.

The Ceremony
A beautiful and aristocratic elderly woman lives in Paris. Her name is Catherine Robbe-Grillet, she is 83 years old. For her worshippers, Catherine is loved and feared like a god and she rewards them with tough discipline and loving punishment. She has refined theatrical, sadomasochist plays into an art form which is as psychological as it is sensual. The scenarios that she develops from her stately home in Paris are exquisite, and one almost feels the silk ribbons tighten around one's wrists. As a dominatrix, she facilitates a poetic power game between herself and the participants. It is all about pushing oneself towards new intensities, as she says, and together with her partner Beverly Charpentier she seeks out a life of intensity, satisfaction and play. Lina Mannheimer's first feature film 'The Ceremony' follows up on the short film 'The Contract' about the unusual relationship between the two, and is an ode to the ritualisation and sacramentalisation of eroticism. The fog lifts and the sun rises over yet another day in Gammalsvenskby, a village somewhere in Ukraine, out in the middle of nowhere, where old babushkas hang around in beet fields and collect the day's harvest. One of them is called Lida, and she lives in a nursing home, where every day presents a new chapter of a long and laborious, but also cheerful and lively existence. And now she has a new boyfriend! A Russian man, who she spends her days together with - much to the jealous displeasure of one of the other inhabitants - when she isn't helping out in the kitchen or serving soup and baked apples to the other residents. Lida belongs to the Swedish-speaking historic minority of the area. Both the landscapes and faces in Anna Eborn's evocative, beautiful and moving film are reminiscent of Béla Tarr and Tarkovsky, but the film's lively humour and humanity is entirely Eborn's own. The film is the second part of a trilogy about Lida, whom Eborn has been working on for several years, and which also includes 'Baba' (2010).

Apt.+Car+All I Have and Own
All young people are moving to the city. And if you don't, you're a loser. Norms and myths about the good (city) life are countered in the Swedish director Clara Bodén's poetic and personal film from the Swedish outskirts, which is judged as being 'out' in spite of its idyllic countryside and red wooden houses. Clara's sister lives here, and the voice that becomes our guide on a bittersweet melancholy road movie around beautiful Jämtland turns out to belong to a large number of youths who are expected to have one common goal: to abandon their roots in the country for a modern life in the city. But who nonetheless carry their very own identity along with them wherever they go. Bodén's anthropological research among youths in Jämtland not only gives us the opportunity to rethink some almost universally accepted ideals, which are basically founded on social competition and a sense of urban superiority. It will with the passage of time become a historical time capsule of a singular artistic integrity. The film is a part of a larger work, which also has an online component, a book and an exhibition.

A young, East German couple makes a fatal decision. And her attempt to piece the puzzles together into a coherent picture is not made easier by the years that have passed, or by the fact that much has disappeared or been suppressed in the fog of collective memory. But in the meantime 'All Fall Down' turns into a phantom portrait of a missing man that Emily herself never really got to know - and of very special family.

Approaching the Elephant
A radical experiment quickly develops into something both chaotic and dramatic at a small American free school. The whole school is the experiment. Here, children and teachers have equal say in an antiauthoritarian attempt at direct democracy. Anarchy lurks in every scene. But the children are smart and articulate, and have clear views about community. And so do the young and idealistic teachers. But a single, unruly child is all it takes to make everything falter. Will the experiment with the free reins succeed? 'We will only know in twenty years', a teacher sighs at a critical moment. He appears to have his own reasons to have gambled everything on a democratic school, where the pupils can learn what they want, when they want to - and if they want to. 'Approaching the Elephant' follows the first year of the small free school. Each image buzzes with an almost electric energy, and Amanda Rose Wilder's attentive camera captures it all in vital and beautiful black and white images. The format is reminiscent of the American tradition of the 1960s, but is more than a formal homage. The first free schools were founded as alternatives to the classic (and class divided) school system, which educated the children of workers to spend a life in the factory. A sultry romance between a married man and his young secretary in 1970s Cologne is revealed down to the smallest detail and with absurd scientific precision in 'Scenario', which with an extremely conscious form and bone-dry irony comments on the act of 'documenting'. The discovery of a black suitcase filled with notes, receipts and a tape recording where the man himself kept a diary of the affair, is arranged as evidence. An analogue report, illustrated in grey and brown by 16mm images in the extremely style-conscious, structuralist tradition. Philip Widmann and Karsten Krause's film work is more than a phenomenal historical document of the times. In a present where the vast collection of data has become an end in itself for both governments and businesses, 'Scenario' is a critical and understated witty commentary on the modern 'will to knowledge'. Then like now, the irony is evident: everything is under control, except the meaning of it all.

But the goods are delayed, the election is over, and Lebrun is now in a fix, as he has to pay his sweaty Lebanese contact. Stranded on an expired visa, lost - and in love! Lebrun whiles away time at karaoke bars in the megapolis's neon-coloured underworld, and in the company of his friend, who runs a beauty salon, while he hatches a plan for the useless t-shirts with a presidential candidate, who might get another chance in 2016. The Swedish artist Måns Månsson has placed a fictional character in a real environment to explore the fascinating new relationship that has arisen between Africa and China, where democracy is one commodity among many others. No dialogue is written in advance, and the minimal story about the worthless t-shirts is just an excuse to conduct a cinematic experiment set in the Chinese city, where tens of thousands of African migrants are in the process of establishing themselves and creating a new life, in a historical parallel to the exchange that has always taken place between East and West. But this time, the West is not invited to the party. However, the reference to the lost souls in the American photographer William Eggleston's film of the same name suggests a tragicomic and existential absurdity, which is independent of time and place.

From the silence among mummies in a Chilean desert to youth street riots in Istanbul, the occupied Cinecittà film studios in Rome and a demonstration in Chile. Like a flaneur who sees the world with the poetic gaze of an outsider, the film's nameless narrator travels around the world in search of happiness. Not as a sentimental feeling of pleasure, but as an idea and practice, which nonetheless turns out to be just as volatile as the images that his buzzing 16mm camera capture in beautiful and gritty scenes. Images that turn their back on him, but which through visions and encounters and with a silent fury initiate him (and us) to a fundamental, human search for meaning, cohesion, knowledge and freedom. It could easily have become a pretentious affair, but Johannes Gierlinger turns the abstract concepts upside down in a politically down-to-earth film, which above all is about resistance. His debut, 'The Fortune You Seek is in Another Cookie' is a dizzying experience in the essayistic tradition of Chris Marker and the early explorers. Beyond Zero: 1914-1918
The 100 year old film images sparkle and crackle with an expressive fury, which almost looks like a reaction to what they depict. This year, it is 100 year since the First World War - the first 'modern' war, and the first to be documented in moving images - forever destroyed any notion of the (Western) world's continued progress under the banner of reason and industrialisation. 1914 was the modern era's absolute year zero. A landmark year, which is here marked in a cinematic collaboration between the renowned American filmmaker Bill Morrison and the string quartet Kronos Quartet, who have recorded the original score by the Serbian composer Aleksandra Vrebalov. For over a decade, Morrison has specialised in bringing early film footage back to the cinema - often in a state where the film reels physical foundation is in a state of dissolution, which gives the images a literally unique cinematic feel that simply must be experienced. 'Beyond Zero: 1914 - 1918' consists entirely of archive footage that is presented naked and without explanatory text or speech, and Morrison's special methods lift the never-before-seen footage from the devastating war to downright dizzying heights, as lost figures trudge through scarred landscapes towards a certain death - shrouded in a thundering, photochemical inferno of scratches, dents, flashing lights and blurred bubbles.

The French star artist Laure Prouvost's brand new work with the promising title 'How to Make Money Religiously' is a conceptual 'memory game': two versions of the same film are presented in succession, the second time in a slightly alternative version, which invites you to consider the relationship between memory, communication and subjectivity at a time when all three of them are massively challenged by a constant stream of information - and marketing. Like an advertisement for a product and a lifestyle that might not even be for sale, Prouvost's work lures us wit promises of luxury and easy money. Knowing full well that the entire system is dependent on selling needs that can never be fulfilled, and that illusion - to use Oscar Wilde's immortal words - is the first of all pleasures. In a fragmented and mischievous collage of extracts, the recent Turner Prize winner Prouvost confronts us with our own role as consumers and members of highly segmented target groups, to which we belong without being aware of it. All this, of course, depends on how you remember and interpret what you hear and see.

Things
The British film magician and CPH:DOX friend Ben Rivers is a director, who has primarily explored geographic and ethnographic outskirts of our civilisation. In 'Things', he embarks on a reverse expedition and turns the camera on his own home. The film unfolds as a local chronology, where Rivers's small London apartment of rooms, objects and archival accumulations of photographs and film strips are examined like a trip into the director's private space. Inspired by the experimental French 'nouveau roman' and George Perec's novel 'Les Choses' (1965), Rivers delivers a cinematic homage to the curious, descriptive approach to the things that surround us. The film is organised as a seasonal suite within the walls of the home and consists of four chapters, which begin in winter and end in autumn. The four parts are composed as different thematic and stylistic ways of documenting what is close to us, appropriately shot in Rivers's favourite, analogue 16mm format. But 'Things' is also a film, where Rivers apparently and for the first time includes digital processing in his work in the shape of a hyper-realistic 3D rendering of his own apartment. At least until you look more closely.

Cutaways
Scenes and characters that are cut right out of a film (and out of film history) before the film is completed, do not cease to exist. They live on as phantoms in an imaginary no-man's land, a landfill of images and narratives. Three of these characters and stories cross paths in 'Cutaways'. A scene from the road movie classic 'Vanishing Point', which was taken out because it was too strange. A superfluous supporting character from 'The Conversation', and a scene from 'Pulp Fiction', which was thrown out because the film was too long. Charlotte Rampling, Abe Vigoda and Dick Miller themselves (re)play the never-seen roles that they had in the original films, before they were finally cut out. They meet 'on the road', an arch-American setting, which is rich in promises of drama, suspense and cinematic feasts for the eyes. But what starts out as just that - an evocative, mysterious and above all 'cinematic' setup - paradoxically ends up as a text-based anti-film, which follows its own point all the way through by insisting that the whole film is actually a part of the work - always. Even that part of the film we otherwise often voluntarily 'edit out' by leaving the screening theatre. Agnieszka Kurant's latest work has been created in collaboration with the master editor Walter Murch, and it is a film where the otherwise neutral cinema space for once actually becomes a part of the work itself.

What is left if you take the passion out of melodrama? The long answer is: tacky muzak, cheap video effects, a bloody knife, rumours of murder, and above all unmotivated behaviour. The short answer is Keren Cytter's 'Siren'. The latest video work by the extremely prolific artist, who can also be experienced as Artist in Focus at this year's CPH:DOX, is named after a song by Tim Buckley playing on a YouTube channel in the background while a passionless romance plays out between two people over a dating site. As so often in Cytter's films, romance is also here associated with inexplicable violence. But who actually is murdered and why (and when, and by whom) remains unclear. 'Siren' is most of all a study in human behaviour, when all standards of psychological realism and emotional authenticity are done away with. The drama is decorated by computer-animated sunflowers, 'for your viewing pleasure'.

Everything That Rises Must Converge
The shoot of a professional porn film somewhere in the United States and an elliptical and enigmatic jealousy story are the core of the visual artist Omer Fast's latest work, which in a suggestive use of split-screen suggests parallels between two different ways of seeing. From ambiguous realism to the easily most popular of all documentary genres: porn, which is produced on an assembly line in an industry that is becoming increasingly mainstream. The work takes place over the course of a single day - from the film's four sex actors get up and get ready to 'go to work' until the day is over. In an interview, the porn film's producer shares his opinion about the industry, which is as dirty as it is clinically sterile, complete with alarm clocks, electronic cigarettes and the neat shaving of genitals. In and around the same house that the film is being shot, a parallel romance is taking place: a film noir in Californian daylight, with an artificiality that colours the otherwise so immediate documentation of the day's events in the house. The duality is encapsulated in the work's title, which comes from a short story by the Catholic writer Flannery O'Connor about shame, fate and remorse.

Journey to the West
As always, time itself is the real protagonist in Tsai Ming-Liang's films, and if you bring along both your patience and your senses to the cinema, 'Journey to the West' is one of the richest film experiences you will have in years. A man (Denis Lavant) wanders in the footsteps of a Buddhist monk (Lee Kang-Sheng), who walks in almost motionless slow-motion through an otherwise busy Marseilles. The smallest details in the image acquire a life and soul as one's gaze invited inside Tsai's refined compositions. The motif of a red-robed monk slowly descending a staircase bathed in dusty sunlight from the street above him will stay with you for a long time. But the situation itself is a simple, but radically interventionist gesture, which evokes highly different responses among random passers-by. Tsai Ming-Liang's latest film work once again emphasises that he is one of the most original and innovative filmmakers of the past twenty years. After several years spent working parallel to his features with shorter video works, several of which have been screening at CPH:DOX, he last year announced that the feature film 'Stray Dogs' would be his last. But one can only hope that he will continue to pursue his opus in films like this one.

Moments of Silence
Mr and Mrs Obama on the anniversary of 9/11, fans of Michael Jackson on his birthday and people gathered in the memory of those who died in the earthquake in Japan in 2011. The Swedish artist duo Bigert & Bergström has created an archive-based montage of situations from around the world and at different times, where people have gathered in a seemingly universal gesture: to hold a moment of silence. A ceremonial form of exceptional circumstances, where the machinery of society is allowed to stand still for a moment, and where the narratives that any community is built up around stands out all the more strongly by virtue of being unspoken. But 'Moments of Silence' is not just a strikingly accurate study of the way in which we collectively deal with loss and trauma, but also a reminder of the importance of maintaining a common memory of the historical turning points, that always seem to happen when you least expect them.

Reduit
Fearful of what he imagined to be an imminent Soviet invasion, the farmer Karl-Göran Persson started to fortify his small house in southern Sweden with layer upon layer of iron and cement to protect himself and his neighbours. An architectural project which today stands on a deserted field as a tragic monument to a historical period's great political crisis, but also as a physical reproduction of Persson's own inner state - a dark and labyrinthine realisation of his increasing obsession and impotence, which John Skoog maps out in slow movements. The eerie melancholy and shady spaces of the house are reproduced in leaden images, shot on 35mm celluloid, while local voices on the soundtrack involve us in their own memories of how they as children experienced Persson. 'Reduit' is the latest of a series of short films, in which Skoog deals with the relationship between the special Swedish landscape and modern history that inscribes itself in it. Karl-Göran Persson continued to build his house, and lived there alone until his death in 1975.

Subconscious Society
The ruins of a post-industrial society's dreams rise up along the misty English coasts like relics from a possible future, which has long gone down in history without ever having realised its utopian potential. Rosa Barba's monumentally ambitious 35mm film work 'Subconscious Society' is a piece of documentary science fiction, where the grandiose architecture plays the lead role. From the rusty, man-made structures in Kent to the abandoned Methodist church Albert Hall in Manchester where a mysterious group of people meet in a ritual community, suggesting that a new form of society may be in its infancy. Barba's visionary film continues the motifs from her earlier works in a contemporary artistic study of industrialisation's modern history, utopian theory and the possibilities of performance art. 'Subconscious Society' has previously been exhibited as an installation, most recently at the Berlin Biennale this summer, but can here for the first time be experienced in a cinema.

Echo Chamber
A railcar moves along the rusty railroads through jungles and tropical landscapes, while a distant radio trumpets forth an apocalyptic weather forecast: a (natural) disaster is looming. With few and simple means, the Columbian artist Guillermo Moncayo has created a disturbing and trance-inducing film, which reaches far beyond itself. The railway is a subject that not only has a film-historical resonance in the modernist tradition, but is also the symbol of a former, heavy-industrial conquest and exploitation of earth's natural resources. A time and a practice whose days are numbered, even if its remnants still cut through the countryside and rusts like fossils on the surface of the earth. The railcar turns out to be mounted on a motorcycle driven by a young man, who is journeying on a hypnotic field trip through the territories of the possible, and night gradually falls. Moncayo is a graduate of the French film and art school Le Fresnoy, and with 'Echo Chamber' he has created a subtle and ethnographic film, that does not settle with just relating to what is real, but also has the courage to anticipate that which is coming.

The Lanthanide Series
The myth of a so-called 'black mirror', which consists of nature's rarest elements and is an occult tool to see into the future, exists across cultures and ages. A fascinating, historical connection between science, art, politics and poetry, on which the American researcher and film director Erin Espelie has created a subtle cinematic essay where every chapter is based on an element in the periodic table. It is the search of new knowledge that the various disciplines gather around the mysterious black mirror: already in the 17th century, painters such as Claude Lorrain used a similar instrument in their efforts to reproduce natural scenes as accurately as possible. And the charting of the potential of the elements is a polyhistoric project with both industrial, scientific and alchemical perspectives. 'The Lanthanide Series' is a deeply original work, which wittily exploits the freedom of art to suggest hitherto unimagined relations. A Cup of Tea
Gunnar is in the midst of a mid-life crisis, has stomach ulcers and suffers the stress of modern life. So he decides to build a teahouse after a Japanese model in the deep, quiet tranquility in the middle of the Norwegian woods, where he can enjoy a cup of tea and meditate on life in solitude. And when a real man first has an idea, then the damn thing has to be turned into reality - even if it is far out in the forest! But he is not entirely on his own. For out under the pine treetops he has both the help and company of three introverted recluses: a farmer with a heartache, a carpenter with a heart problem and a depressed moose hunter. It turns out, however, that building a suitable retreat according to all the rules of 'wabi-sabi' is a challenge in itself (see the film and you will understand what we mean!). The minimalist, Japanese tea ceremony should ideally take place in a ramshackle hut built of old wood to remind its guests of the transience of life. The humour, the magnificent beauty of the forests and the existential soul-searching are unmistakably Nordic, in a wry and philosophical docu-comedy shot in true wabi-sabi style on everything from super-8 to GoPro, while an ironic narrator gleefully comments on the events from a radio studio.

Between Rings
Esther Phiri has literally had to fight to carve out an independent life on her own terms. In her native Zambia, the seven-time world champion in boxing became an icon for anyone who had dreams in life that were different from the ones that traditions had created for them. And in 'Between Rings' we understand why: she is a deeply charismatic woman with the courage of her convictions. And she can knock anybody out! Esther first renounced her education to support her family. But since then she has also renounced the expectations of marriage and family to invest in her meteoric career as a boxer. With success comes pressure, jealousy and criticism - especially outside the ring. In the wrong hands, this film could have been a predictable and sentimental story, but the Finnish/Zambian directors Salla Sorri & Jessie Chisi have created an exceptionally realistic film, which avoids politically correct clichés in favour of a portrait that makes space for the contrasts, conflicts and inner tensions that are also a part of Esther Phiri's story. And finally, you can only have the greatest respect for her tenacity and courage - and for how infinitely much she had to fight for.

Out of Norway
Emanuel fled to Norway from Liberia many years ago. Now he wants to return but the bureaucracy says no, even if he is neither allowed to work nor have an education. So Emanuel must once again take the trip as an illegal refugee, this time in the other direction. An absurd process which he documents himself in a video diary, that has now become an independent film. So far, there is nothing new about a film director leaving the camera to his main character, so that he or she can document their own situation 'from the inside'. But 'Out of Norway' is not as simple as it seems. Emanuel was a walking mystery in the Norwegian artist Thomas Østbye's previous film 'Imagining Emanuel', a mischievous and self-reflexive (meta)film which constantly undermined everything we thought we knew. But this time we get the story from Emanuel himself. And part of the story is the fact that his false exit papers were paid for with money that Thomas Østbye won for 'Imagining Emanuel' at CPH:DOX in 2011! The form is possibly (but only possibly) more authentic here. When Emanuel stares back at you, the doubt still lingers.

Pervert Park
Florida Justice Transitions looks like any other American trailer park. Only discreet electronic ankle tags and sporadic vandalism bear witness to the fact that the residents are all convicted sex offenders. From misdemeanours to monstrous crimes. And in a state with tough laws, this means in practice that the inhabitants are condemned to a life in isolation from society. The park's residents are left to themselves to find out what comes after crime and punishment. The debut directing couple Frida & Lasse Barkfors take us behind the invisible fence of stigmatisation, lend a human face to an outcast community of demonised sex offenders - and forces us to take sides in a moral dilemma, which is more profound and complex than one possibly feels like being reminded of. For no matter whether the residents themselves are victims, one inevitably asks oneself if there are some things that can not - or should not ? - be forgiven. 'Pervert Park' is a sensitive and intimate film with a diabolic sense of not letting us off lightly when it comes to its inflamed topic.

The fog lifts and the sun rises over yet another day in Gammalsvenskby, a village somewhere in Ukraine, out in the middle of nowhere, where old babushkas hang around in beet fields and collect the day's harvest. One of them is called Lida, and she lives in a nursing home, where every day presents a new chapter of a long and laborious, but also cheerful and lively existence. And now she has a new boyfriend! A Russian man, who she spends her days together with - much to the jealous displeasure of one of the other inhabitants - when she isn't helping out in the kitchen or serving soup and baked apples to the other residents. Lida belongs to the Swedish-speaking historic minority of the area. Both the landscapes and faces in Anna Eborn's evocative, beautiful and moving film are reminiscent of Béla Tarr and Tarkovsky, but the film's lively humour and humanity is entirely Eborn's own. The film is the second part of a trilogy about Lida, whom Eborn has been working on for several years, and which also includes 'Baba' (2010).

All young people are moving to the city. And if you don't, you're a loser. Norms and myths about the good (city) life are countered in the Swedish director Clara Bodén's poetic and personal film from the Swedish outskirts, which is judged as being 'out' in spite of its idyllic countryside and red wooden houses. Clara's sister lives here, and the voice that becomes our guide on a bittersweet melancholy road movie around beautiful Jämtland turns out to belong to a large number of youths who are expected to have one common goal: to abandon their roots in the country for a modern life in the city. But who nonetheless carry their very own identity along with them wherever they go. Bodén's anthropological research among youths in Jämtland not only gives us the opportunity to rethink some almost universally accepted ideals, which are basically founded on social competition and a sense of urban superiority. It will with the passage of time become a historical time capsule of a singular artistic integrity. The film is a part of a larger work, which also has an online component, a book and an exhibition.
