Romanticism in the Netherlands
Romanticism prevailed throughout Europe during the first half of the 19th century. A longing time for drama or sentimentality is a central theme in Romantic art. In the Romantic painting, a storm is always fiercer, the dark sky always mote threatening and a tree or church always lager than in real life. Painters in this period were not intent on rendering reality faithfully. They presented nature as overwhelming or, alter natively, as intimately connected to man.
