Trapani&Marsala
Trapani and Marsala are both located on Sicily’s western coast, 30km apart from one another. Throughout their history, their importance as strategic centers lied in the trade with Africa.
Their proximity to Africa has also always brought strong, seasonal dry winds which characterize the local climate, as well as cultural influences from the Arab world.
Near the coast, the dry and hot climate, as well as poor soils (ideal for viticulture), allow winemakers to obtain grapes with high sugar levels, low acidity and a tendency for oxidation after pressing, perfect for the production of Marsala wine.
In land, the hilly area is richer, with clay soils. The average temperature is one or two degrees lower, it is slightly rainier and the resulting vines have higher yields, but lower sugar levels.
On a hill near Trapani is the well-preserved medieval town of Erice, which attracts tourists and locals alike, especially as a shelter during the hot summer months, and is also hometo quality viticulture. The Erice wines gained DOC status in October 2004 fortheir red and white wines (including dry, sparkling, passito and late harvestwines), covering a number of towns and Trapani itself and therefore overlapping with Marsala DOC, which only covers fortified wines from the area.
According to DOC regulations, Erice whitewines are made from 60% Catarratto, and reds from 60% Nero d’Avola. As isalmost standard for Sicilian DOCs, these wines have the option of becoming riserva if aged for 24 months prior to release.
Marsala is a Sicilian town which owes its fortunes to its utmost ambassador, Marsala wine. Marsala wine is the most commonly produced wine in Sicily and one of the first Sicilian DOCs. It wascreated “by accident”, when a British merchant, John Woodhouse, due to a thunder storm, looked for shelter in the harbor of Marsala. Woodhouse tried thelocal wine and decided to ship 60 barrels to the UK.
Before shipping it, however, he added grapespirit to ensure the wine would not be affected by the long journey. When the wine reached its destination, being it a similar flavor profile to Port and Madeira, already very popular in the UK, it was a huge success. This fortified winepairs well with aged cheeses and dried fruits (gold and amber Marsala) and darkchocolate (ruby Marsala). It is also an excellent meditation wine.
