GRE之150 Mixed Practice Set 1
The name of the AMLibrarry has long been _____: even longtime city residents assume it is a run-of-the-mill library, never suspecting what art treasures it contains.
2.Although economic growth has concentionally been viewed as the ____for poverty in undeveloped regions, this prescription's negative environmental side effects are becoming a concern.
3_____long-term outlook, saying that... 因此只有sanguine(乐观的,自信的)
5.The governor has considerable political talents, but as a speaker he is far less ____than his opponent, whose oratorical skills are____。
6.三空题
第三个空错,错误原因竟然是把 sometimes, bothers critics, who often scold the director for lacking ____把最后一个定语从句当成director把director 当成国王....
7.读题障碍 不确定unraveling(解开;揭开),concoct(捏造),out of thin air(无中生有地;凭空捏造)
最终的解题障碍就是unmistakable(明显的,obvious)理解成“没有错”造成判断错误
下面分析题目...., what eventually became____was that the company had been concocting "value" out of thin air, thanks not to the trading strategies it promoted as visionary but to financial _____that turned a once-solid entity into the most notorious ____in an era of corporate scandals.
第一个空的选项有(vindicated(证明正确的),unmistakable(明显的),unverifiable(不能证实的))很显然unmistakable(明显的)填在第一空更合适。第二空not to the trading strategies but to financial ___根据空格后的提示“that turned a once-solid entity into the most notorious”该空填的应是一个negative的词,并与strategies对应games最合适(其他两个是redemption和responsibilities,第三空turned a once-solid entity into the most notorious ____in an era of corporate scandals.
8.读题障碍:cloying(l令人腻烦的),clueless(愚蠢的),come out of nowhere 突然出现 blow a whistle, in the know ,obscure(鲜为人知的)
Kept____by cloying commercial radio and clueless record executives, the American popular mnusic scene has frequently depended on the cities at the edges of the cultural map to provide a much-needed shot of _____. The momentary ____ what the next big thing is seems to come out of nowhere---as if someone blows a whistle only those in the know can here, and suddenly record executives and journalists are crawling all over what has previously been an obscure locale.
“suddenly record executives and journalists are crawling all over ” 有个感觉“很多人都要去...” 能代表很多人去干吗的选项(censensus about, indifference to, guarantee of)显然censensus about 更合适。
然后看第一个空 既然是a much-needed shot of original, 那么第一个空(hidebound, liberated, obligated )hidebound更合适。
Despite hypothesis ranging from armed conflict to climate change, the abandoment of more than 600 Puedo cliff dwellings in Mesa Verde by A.D.1300 still puzzles archaeologists.
第二句Researchers analyzing refuse from one Pueblo community found remains of maize....in 44 percent of samples from years when the community flourished, but in only 10 percent of samples from the years near the time of depopulation, while the remains of wild plants increased significantly. 对比when the community flourished(44%)和 the years near the time of depopulation(10%,and wild increased)
第三句Bones found in the samples showed that the consumption of domesticated turkeys(fed maize)...decreased from 55 to 14 percent, while increase in wild-animal bones.
对比the consumption of domesticated turkeys(decreased)和 wild-animal bones (increased)
The data suggest that near the end of the site's occupation, villagers experienced substantial food shortages and adopted hunting-and-gathering to compensate for crop failure
Although it is intuitively clear that an increase in antipredator behavior lowers an animals' risk of predation when predators are present, such benefits are not easily demonstrated.
If you demonstrate something, you show people how it works or how to do it.)
第一句展示一个关系antipredator behavior(increase) lowers risk of predation.
第二句One tudy that did so found that well-fed guppies are more alert for predators and are consequently less likely to be killed that are their hungry counterparts, which feed with greater intensity.
It is also well documented that a decrease in activity lowers an animals' risk of predation by reducing the probability of being detected or encountered by a predator.
This effect was concincingly demonstrated by a study in which it was found that partially anesthetized tadpoles were less likely to be captured by dragonfly larvae than were unanesthetized tadpoles.
Experts have been claiming that the skill demands of today's jobs have outstripped the skills workers possess. Moss and Tilly counter that worker dificiencies lie less in job-specific skills than in such attributes as motivation, interpersonal skills, and appropriate work demeanor.
A显然错
Bwhether employers think that job-specific skills are as important as such sttributes .....
C错,文中没有提 expectations of employers
Dwhether adequate numbers of workers in the labor market possess the particular skills demanded by various different jobs.
A particular bacterium that has never encountered a particular virus will usually succumb to it, a ___that may, surprisingly, be beneficial to the colony in which the bacterium lives.
A particular bacterium that has never encountered a particular virus will usually succumb to it这句话。
The remarkable thing about the mayoral race, in retrospect, is that so many people wanted the job of managing a municipality so obviously about to ____
态度的判断在remarkable( unusual or special ),所以空格处应该是negative的词
disintergrate 和 crumble
19. It is a testimony to Roth's ___that he could not quite bring himself to write a book as dull and flat as his original conception for his novel Everyman seemed to demand.
talent genius
第一段:写出了一个对比,之前的the idea that pianists should be musician-scholars whose playing reflected the way composers wanted their music to sound replaced the notion that panists should be virtuosos whose performances thrilled audiences with emotional daring and showy displays of technique.
Her playing was Romantic but it was at least as close in spirit to the style of playing intended composers of the Baroque (1600-1750) and Classical(1750-1830) eras, as have been the more exacting but less emotionally resonant interpretations of most of harpsichordists since Landowska.这个句子读不太懂,抓住关键点“Her playing was Romantic but it was at least as close in spirit to the style of ”“more exacting but less emotionally resonant interpretations of most of harpsichordists since Landowska.” ......
Her achievements were the result of a lifetime of scholarship, truly remarkable physical gifts, and resilient rhythm, all combined with excellent judgment about when not to hold the printed note sacrosanct. ...She was a genius at underlining the dramatic and emotional content of a piece, and to do so, she took liberties, all kinds of liberties, while nevertheless preserving the integrity of a composer's score. Landowska dramatic and emotional content of a piece和integrity of a composer's score并重
第四段:说明Landowska的影响,one by one, pianists stopped playing Bach's music as sdapted for the piano by Liszt or by Tausing. Then they gradually stopped performing any kind of Baroque music on the pianom even Acarlatti's. .......
20.问Landowska 的演奏embodied a rejection of which of the following?
其实类似于文章主旨,开头是一个矛盾the idea that....reflect the way composers wanted their music to sound replaced "showy displays of technique" 而Landowska 两者都做的很好。 第三段后半部分和说她的perserving the integrity of a composer's score.
D performances emphasing showy displays of technique that comprise the integrity of a composer's original score.
She demonstrated how the keybord works of Baroque composers such as Bach, Handel, Scarlatti, and Couperin probably sounded in their own times.
Then thet gradually stopped performing any kind of Baroque music on the paino, even Scarlatti's.
The paino repertoire, it began to be felt, was extensive enough without reverting to transcriptions of Broque music originally written for the harpsichord----the piano performance of Bach and Scarlatti were
因此D They were composed for instruments other than piano.
22.Landowska would probably objected most strongly to which of the following?
Thanks to L, Bach's music (originally composed for the harpsichord) now sounded inappropriatedly thick when played on the piano.
Scientists formerly believed that the rocky planets—Earth, Mercury, Venus, and Mars—were created by the rapid gravitational collapse of a dust cloud, a deflation giving rise to a dense orb.
That view was challenged in the 1960s, when studies of Moon craters revealed that these craters were caused by the impact of objects that were in great abundance about 4.5 billion years ago but whose number appeared to have quickly decreased shortly thereafter.
Moon craters were caused by the impact of objects(abundance about 4.5 billion years ago but quickly decreased shortly thereafter.)
This observation rejuvenated Otto Schmidt’s 1944 theory of accretion.
According to this theory, cosmic dust gradually lumped into ever-larger conglomerates: particulates, gravel, small and then larger balls, planetesimals (tiny planets), and, ultimately, planets.具体解释theory of accretion
As the planetesimals became larger, their numbers decreased. Consequently, the number of collisions between planetesimals decreased.具体解释第二句里abundance about 4.5 billion years ago but quickly decreased shortly thereafter.
24.The passage provides evidence that Schmidt would be likely to disagree with the theory presented in the first sentence over
先看first sentence 理论“ rapid gravitational collapse of a dust cloud”,再看S的理论“cosmic dust gradually lumped into ever-larger conglomerates”,两个理论的对比文章中只分析了时间。
