今天一位群友（QQ群号码：63273421，里面分享了好多好东西）分享一份我的学生如何练习翻译/李长栓.doc,一看是好东西，因为之前一直有关注过李老师的博客，还有买了他编写的《非文学理论翻译与实践》（在此，特别推荐这本书，书图如下，看完这本书，就可以学习很多翻译思维，包括如何把尽量避免写出或者翻译成中式英语、如何利用Google验证译文是否地道（这部分李老师写得很详细，充分体现出一位译者对翻译的热爱以及严谨的治学态度。）
好了，言归正传，今天看完这个word的前30页，虽然只是粗略看了一般前面的原文和译文，但后面的解析可都认真感悟了一下。
这篇原文主要讲，在国内众多的历史课本或辅导爱国读本中，讲到北宋的社会经济，往往说这时期出现了中国第一个商标。这枚传说中的白兔商标现存于中国历史博物馆，中间一个白兔图，寓“玉兔捣药”之意，两边刻有：“收买上等钢条，造工夫细针，认门前白兔儿为记”，据专家考证，应为山东一家“济南刘家工夫针铺”的铜版标志。接下来讲了一些中国商标法的发展和西方的一些知识产权保护法以及商标法的相关知识。

在国内众多的历史课本或辅导爱国读本中，讲到北宋的社会经济，往往说这时期出现了中国第一个商标。
译文：In various Chinese history textbooks and patriotic readings[i], one thing is always covered in the economic development[ii] of the Northern Song Dynasty—the emergence[iii] of China’s first trademark.
[i]辅导爱国读本
第一步，理解中文。
所谓“辅导爱国读本”一般指供学生课下阅读的旨在培养爱国情操的材料(当然也可以面向社会读者)，内容可以涵盖从古至今国家经济政治文化等各方面情况：讲成就可以培养人们的民族自尊心、自信心、自豪感等等；也可以讲失败、讲教训，激励人们奋发图强，建设祖国。…这些在中国都属于“爱国主义教育”的内容。文中要讲的是北宋出现了中国历史上第一枚商标，这是经济发展的标志之一，算是“成就”，同时此商标设计上又体现了浓郁的中国传统文化特色（玉兔捣药），因此自然会被写入爱国读本让大家了解。
第二步，理解基础上做出一个译文。
首先想到的就是reading materials for patriotic education. 后来觉得这里专门用patriotic education中国味太重（总强调爱国主义教育），就考虑改成reading materials for patriotism.
根据：
Patriotic - feeling, expressing,or inspired by love for one's country.
Patriotism denotes positive and supportive attitudes to a 'fatherland' (Latin patria< Greek patrida, πατρίδα), by individuals and groups. The 'fatherland' (or'motherland') can be a region or a city, but patriotism usually applies to a nation and/or a nation-state. Patriotism covers such attitudes as: pride in its achievements and culture,the desire to preserve its character and the basis of the culture, and identification with other members of the nation. <http://www.answers.com/patriotism>.
从上面的解释还可以看出patriotism并不和“爱国主义”完全划等号，因为patriotism is not necessarily an ism or a doctrine. “主义”缩小了词义，而这个词本来可以指爱国态度、情感等等，甚至爱的不一定非得是“国”，只是usually表示爱国。
第三步，验证英文说法。（一般是输进Google看有没有/有多少类似用法，主要看外网）。
结果：(发现问题)
“Reading materials”和“patriotic education/patriotism”分开的有，但很少见讲英语国家的网站上有合在一起这样用的。说明仍然比较Chinglish.
至此在这个问题上脑袋开始打结，再继续找到更好译法的可能性不大，于是标出来放在一边，改天再回过头想。所谓”sleep on it”.
隔天忽然想到reading materials可简化为readings:
Reading - written material intended to be read; "the teacher assigned new readings".

社会经济是指一个社会中的物质资料的生产、分配、交换和消费总合。这其中社会生产是基础。

也就是说“社会经济”主要讲的是“经济”这层含义，“社会”只是经济活动发生的地点。鉴于后面已经提供了the Northern Song Dynasty这个社会背景，这里只说经济发展状况(economic development) 就够了。
注：不可以想当然译为social economy，因为这个短语本身表达另外一个意思：

[iii]出现了中国第一个商标
这里“出现了中国第一个商标”指的是迄今为止发现的中国历史上最早的商标。但也可能这种东西之前已经存在只是尚未发现，或者自身条件还没发展到有资格被称作商标的程度。因此用了emergence,希望能表现一种emerging to the surface and becoming apparent的过程。
