The Go-Between
The boy considered Marian as his goddess. He sent messages for her. At first, he thought she was doing business with Ted as she told him. Finally he found out Marian and Ted was in love. They met secretly with the help of his message delivery. He felt being deceived and wanted to quit, but he admired Marian and liked Ted, so he saw it through. Ted and Marian was coughs together. Ted shot himself.
The boy said he didn't know whether he had failed in life or whether he had succeeded. What he had been through told him nothing about happiness and unhappiness.
Fifties years later, he came back and found everything has changed. There is hollowness and helplessness. Marian, the girl who used to be loved by everyone, now lives on the deceptive memories, alone.
Marian complained at her old age, it was the fault of this wicked century in which death and hate have driven away life and love.
But she still wanted her grandson Edward to get married. Every man should get married, she said.
She still love Ted and the time when she was with him, but she is fading away.
Marian can't love Ted freely and Ted can't say their love out loud. They are unconventional, but not dirty at all. Ted wouldn't tell the boy what spoon means until he found out by himself at last. Sadly, in the worst way. She treated the boy by heart and the sent him meaningful birthday gift, a bicycle for the mess agent.
Fifty years later, the Trimmingham family lost its prestige. Time has changed. Maybe.
