A review of Princess Mononoke
Princess Mononoke is a movie by Gongqijun. It’s about the relationship between human beings and circumstances. In the movie, a group of people want to destroy the forest and get the head of the gold of mountains and animals. It’s the forest’s fight with the greedy people, and Princess Mononoke as represents respect and awe towards nature and environment, while the leader of the village and the representatives of the king, on the other hand, are rebellions of nature and implement massacre towards other creatures. The hero is between these sides and tries to reach a balance and promote communication between the two sides. In the movie, human beings with advanced guns are strong, aggressive and destructive; nature is both vulnerable and gets hurt by people, but also strong-willed and hard to conquer or defeat. The spirit of the forest and its supporters is unwinnable and they fight hard with all heart and soul. Princess Mononoke in species belongs to human beings, but she has devoted her heart and life to nature. She was born in the forest and supported by the female wolf. Human beings has little emotional connection with her while, on contrary, forests and nature give her everything that nurtures her both physically and mentally. It’s no wonder that she decides to fight for the forest against the greedy and arrogant human species. Moreover, compared with other human beings, she is the one who has received excellent trainings of nature and balance, knowledge that human beings, who are addicted to the fantasy of the power of civilization and arms, turn a blind eye to. Although it’s understandable for the princess to stand by the forest, it doesn’t mean that is not a brave decision. In the movies, it’s shown that some animals like some wild boars are suspicious about her standings, and people treats her differently from the animals, forests, and so on. In a word, it’s an easier decision for the princess to stand on the human side instead of the opposite one, considering the likeliness of winning, belongings based on species. But Princess Mononoke didn’t yield to the common sense or most people’s opinions and chose a harder way and devoted herself unreservedly to the fight. As for the hero of the movie, he is much closer to human life and human beings than Princess Mononoke, but at the same time, know nature better and treat nature in great awe. Also, his affection for Princess Mononoke is unable to neglect. In my opinion, these three parts of him are the main reason for his decisions and action in the fighting. He can understand both and he is unwilling to discard either of them, which leads to his trying his best to prevent the fight. Nevertheless, the role of him is more than that; he thinks the balance is significant, which recognizes both a moderate development and awe in nature, protection of environment. The forest is not untouchable, but unable to be destroyed and treated as ease, either. For me, the movie is too extreme and just a fiction. Although the discussion of people’s attitudes towards nature is of great value, it is still more like a fairytale to me. Maybe I just still see the key of the movie. reviews about the movie and my essays are welcomed.
