doctor, 博士or医生？
在英国无论是否取得医学博士学位的注册内科医生都叫doctor，但是有资质的外科医生通常叫自己为Mr/Mrs/Miss等。在美国，牙医和兽医和内科与外科医生一样都叫做doctor。虽然习惯上，拥有phd学位的人拥有doctor的头衔，这种称呼理论上不算错，但是在学术圈以外，这种称呼可能被认为有些吹嘘的成分，并且有时会导致与作为医生的doctor产生混淆。

1. “医生”的正确说法是a medical doctor, 但通常仅称doctor。 doctor在美国泛指“医生，大夫”，简称为Dr，但在英国，外科医生不用doctor，而用surgeon;牙科医生用dentist。
2.“看医生”(即去看病）可说 see(或 consult) a doctor,而不说 look (watch) a doctor； “请医生”可说 send for (call in) a doctor 或 get (fetch) a doctor，而不可说invite a doctor 。
3.doctor还表示大学里的最高学位：博士（学位获得者）。如：Ph.D.为Doctor of Philosophy的缩写，本意为“哲学博士”，统指“博士”。如：
Doctor of Medicine ； Doctor of Education.
He plans to study for his Ph. D. in Physics at Oxford.
4.doctor偶尔也被用作定语。如：
How is your doctor brother?
Tell me something about your doctor friend Tom.
5. what the doctor ordered原意为“医生让做的事情”，现均转义为“最需要的事情”， 常用于口语中。医生让你做的事情当然就是最需要的事情了。如：
After a hard day at work a nice meal at home is just what the doctor ordered.
