Having been one of the 'lucky few' who managed to grab a ticket in the second round ballot, I travelled down from North Norfolk to see the first matinee yesterday. At 65, I'm not from Mr Hiddleston's adoring younger fan base and I did wonder if I might end up being the oldest there. I needn't have worried. The audience were a broad mix. I thought I'd see if anyone from the press had managed to review and was glad that Michael Billington had got himself a ticket. He always writes good considered accounts which, over the years, have proved largely on the button.
How sad to see so many whining, chips-on-shoulders comments here. From those who begrudge TH his education to those who think the reviewer fiddled his ticket.
The review is a good account. Tom Hiddleston is a magnetic and charismatic actor. I was in the front row and at one point could have reached out and touched him. You could feel the energy of the man coming off in waves.
Actors either 'have it' or they don't. He has it. That stage presence that so captivates and compels. And you can clearly hear every word. His delivery and projection are all one could wish for. I can only see him getting better and better. I only hope that as an obviously sensitive and perceptive person, he doesn't bother to read the puerile and pathetic things that often seem to be written about him by those with nothing better to do.
The cast in fact were all excellent. Nicholas Farrell wonderful - again an actor that can project such understated menace that he commands your attention. I am so glad I saw this as it was memorable for all the right reasons.
As to the whingers banging on about fund-raising for elites. The money in part will provide student accommodation to help lessen the burden of the horrendous rental costs currently faced by young RADA hopefuls.
