DJ界男巫Nimbus自娱与治愈的音乐世界
Nimbus has been a long time collaborator, sound wizard, and elder statesmen for many crews in Shenzhen ever since his arrival in 2010. Here’s an interview we did with him in 2012, updated with a few new questions for 2017…
自从2010年Nimbus来到深圳以后，他一直是很多深圳地下音乐团队的长期合作者，声音向导和引领者。这是2012年与他进行的一次采访，并更新了今年新采访的内容……
Tell us a bit about yourself… When I’m not being Mr. Cool behind the decks I’m a bit of tech nerd haha! My work is also my hobby... I’m either fixing something, building something or designing something. I have worked with a few audio and DJ gear companies here in China over the last two years, helping to fine tune some great new products, and I have made a few small inventions of my own. I guess I have been tinkering with gear that makes noise for so long that I finally found a use for it (besides driving my girlfriend crazy!)

在我不当“Mr. Cool”时私下里我就是个科技宅男，哈哈！我的工作同时也是我的兴趣爱好，我平常不是在修理东西，就是建造东西或者设计一些东西。过去两年来我在中国跟几家音响和DJ设备公司合作过，帮他们微调试音出一些特别棒的产品，我自己也做了一些小发明。我曾经花很长时间不断修理设备搞出很多噪音，后来终于找到了它的用途（这要把我女朋友弄疯了！）。
How’d you get your DJ name? Well, my friend came up with it when I opened my own nightclub back in 2001. Basically, we had all worked very hard to create a very large, up-market, Euro-style club… and no one wanted the resident DJ to be called “DJ Swampy”! So, the club was called Altitude… and the name Nimbus was born. How I got the nickname “Swampy” is a totally different subject!!!
你是怎样想到这个DJ名的？
嗯，2001年的时候我自己开了一家酒吧，这个名字是我朋友那时候想到的。当时我们都非常拼，想要打造一个非常庞大、欧洲兼上市风的一个俱乐部，然而没人想要驻场DJ被叫做“DJ Swampy”！所以，这家酒吧取名Altitude，我的DJ名Nimbus也诞生了。我是怎么得到“Swampy”这个外号的就完全是另一个主题了……
What is the best DJing experience you’ve ever had? That’s an easy one… it was the first month Club Altitude had opened, and it was the first club of its kind in the whole region. There were over 1200 people jammed in the main room, and because we had been open for a month already the crowd was really getting to understand the new style of music. There was one
你DJ表演中最美好的经历是什么？
这个问题简单……那是在Altitude开张第一个月的时候（基本上是那个区第一家这种类型的酒吧），因为我们开张一个月已经获得了一大批粉丝，而且他们已经开始懂这种新类型的音乐，所以当时在主舞台大约有超过1200人即兴跳舞。有一个晚上，我放了来自地下的一个旧厂牌音乐叫做“Born Slippy”，整个空间都燃了。每个人，我真的指每一个人，包括员工都跟着节拍在跳，我们所有人都被同一种情绪和意念相连。在那一刻我意识到我永远不会停止成为一名DJ，永远不会！
What’s your favorite venue in Shenzhen?
Overall my favorite place to play is at the beach events at Dameisha, or Xichong. There is something special about playing out in the sun, wind and even the rain. I love being in the middle of a set when the sun rises.
在深圳你最喜欢哪个演出场地？
我最喜欢演出的地方都是在沙滩——大梅沙，西冲。在阳光下，清风中甚至雨里表演会带给我很特别的感觉。我爱在太阳升起时，我在一个set表演中沉迷。
What’s your favorite Fresh event thus far?
The most recent ‘Deep’ party at Little India was PHAT! It was great being able to get down and dirty! But to be honest I didn’t even DJ at my favorite gig. That one was last year at Plush Bar, with the Oldschool Hiphop party… the place was jumpin’!!!
你最喜欢的Fresh活动是哪一场？
最近一次在Little India的“Deep”派对超级赞！能够去享受这场派对并演出太棒了！但老实说我都没有在我最喜欢的派对DJ。就是那场在Plush酒吧的旧学院派Hip Hop派对，连场地都震动跳跃。
Who is your favorite DJ?
Norman Cook (Fatboy Slim) has always been my inspiration as a DJ. I still hear his influence in my sets after 20 years of funking things up.
你最喜欢的DJ是谁？
Norman Cook (Fatboy Slim)永远是我作为DJ的灵感源泉，20多年过去了我至今仍然受他影响。
What does it take to be a good DJ?
Each DJ will have a different view of what makes a DJ good. To me, a good DJ is someone who can develop a unique sound for themselves and can develop that sound to work in different environments and with different crowds. You can’t always please everyone, but a good DJ will never offend anyone with his music if he/she chooses carefully and reads the crowd well.
你觉得成为一名好的DJ需要付出什么？
关于如何成为一名优秀的DJ，每个DJ都会有不同的想法。对于我来说一名好的DJ是能够发掘自己的独特声音，能让自己的这个声音在不同的环境影响不同的人潮。你不可能永远取悦每一个人，但一个好的DJ一定不会冒犯其他人对音乐的选择和喜好，并且能够读懂观众。
What makes a good sound system/quality listening experience?
The most important part is the speakers themselves. You don’t need to spend a lot for great sounding speakers, but search for ones that suit your purpose. The second is the room the speakers are in. No matter how much money you spend on speakers, they might sound terrible if you don’t prepare the room for good sound. Closing the curtains, or throwing a rug on the floor might be all you need to make your sound really pop.
哪些因素能够打造一个好的音响系统/有品质的音乐体验？
其实最重要的第一个因素是音响本身：你不用花很多钱去买超高品质的音响，但你要搜寻到符合你需求的音响。第二就是音响所在的空间：不论你花了多少钱在这音响上，如果你的空间很烂也没办法打造一个好声音体验。要让声音听起来很pop——关上窗帘，铺上地毯或许就是你要做的一切。
What do you make of the Shenzhen music scene? How has it changed since you arrived here?
There seems to me more of a producer community than a few years ago. I see more local producers getting support from each other, and a healthy live music scene still growing. A healthy scene means Shenzhen will be able to develop its own unique musical culture, enriched by its very musically diverse residents.
自从你来到深圳后你发现深圳的地下音乐圈子有什么改变？
相比几年前来说现在更多倾向于多了音乐制作人的圈子。我看到更多的本地制作人之间相互支持，一个很健康的live music现场在成长。一个健康的音乐圈子意味着深圳有能力发展自身的音乐文化，被本地多元化的音乐人所丰满。
