2011-07-10 00:26:03
Rumi:
The Absolute works with nothing.
The workshop, the materials
are what does not exist.
Try and be a sheet of paper with nothing on it.
Be a spot of ground where nothing is growing,
where something might be planted,
a seed, possibly, from the Absolute.
2011-07-02 00:04:15
Sarmad:
A man who is lost in lust and greed
Is sick in soul and always in need;
A hungry eye is never sated.
Whoever I looked I saw this greed.
他的灵魂病了而总是在需索;

Rumi:
The Master roamed the streets
With lamp in hand, crying:
‘I’m tired of devil and beast!
I demand a man!’
2011-03-18 23:46:44
John of the Cross:
I came into the unknown
and stayed there unknowing
rising beyond all science.
I did not know the door
but when I found the way,
unknowing where I was,
I learned enormous things,
but what I felt I cannot say,
for I remained unknowing,
rising beyond all science.
It was the perfect realm
of holiness and peace.
In deepest solitude
I found the narrow way:
a secret giving such release
that I was stunned and stammering,
rising beyond all science.
One instant is eternity;
eternity is the now.
When you see through this one instant,
you see through the one who sees.
片刻即永恒;

Dark Night -- John of the Cross (1542 - 1591)
On a darkened night,
Anxious, by love inflamed,
-- O happy chance! --
Unnoticed, I took flight,
My house at last at peace and quiet.
Safe, disguised by the night,
By the secret ladder I took flight,
-- O happy chance! --
Cloaked by darkness, I scaled the height,
My house at last at peace and quiet.
On that blessed night,
In secret, and seen by none,
None in sight,
I saw with no other guide or light,
But the one burning in my heart bright.
This guide, this light,
Brighter than the midday sun,
Led me to the waiting One
I knew so well -- my delight!
To a place with none in sight.
O night! O guide!
O night more loving than the dawn!
O night that joined
The lover with the Beloved;
Transformed, the lover into the Beloved drawn!
爱人与至爱;

Having crossed the river --Kabir
Having crossed the river,
where will you go, O friend ?
There's no road to tread,
No traveler ahead,
Neither a beginning, nor an end.
There's no water, no boat, no boatman, no cord;
No earth is there, no sky, no time, no bank, no ford.
没有水,没有船,没有船夫,没有绳索;
You have forgotten the Self within,
Your search in the void will be in vain;
In a moment the life will ebb
And in this body you won't remain.
你在空无中的探索将一无所获;
Be ever conscious of this, O friend,
You've to immerse within your Self;
Kabir says, salvation you won't then need,
For what you are, you would be indeed.
你必须投身于你的真我;
2011-02-20 00:00:19
Meditation brings wisdom; lack of meditation leaves ignorance. Know well what leads you forward and what hold you back, and choose the path that leads to wisdom.
Meditate. Live purely. Be quiet. Do your work with mastery. Like the moon, come out from behind the clouds! Shine.
2011-02-08 01:31:11
Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, no matter if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense.
2011-02-06 00:00:23
We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts, we make the world.
We are shaped by our thoughts; we become what we think. When the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves.
2011-01-28 00:35:27
If a man hold himself dear, let him guard himself carefully, keeping vigil like a watchman in the night.
Men who do not seek virtue perish like old herons in a lake without fish. They lie like worn-out bows, sighing after the past.
2011-01-27 00:05:11
The tongue like a sharp knife... Kills without drawing blood.
The mind is everything. What you think you become.
Those who view their deaths correctly cease their quarrels at once.
2011-01-25 00:02:25
To be idle is a short road to death and to be diligent is a way of life; foolish people are idle, wise people are diligent.
Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon, and the truth.
There is nothing more dreadful than the habit of doubt. Doubt separates people. It is a poison that disintegrates friendships and breaks up pleasant relations. It is a thorn that irritates and hurts; it is a sword that kills.
There are only two mistakes one can make along the road to truth; not going all the way, and not starting.
2011-01-20 00:00:43
Be not a friend of the world.
Look on the world as a bubble, as a mirage; the king of death does not see him who thus looks down on the world.
Fools are immersed in the world but the discerning do not cling to it.
This world is dark, few only can see here; few only can escape like birds from the net.
2011-01-14 00:15:06
All that we are is the result of what we have thought.
If a man speaks or acts with an evil thought, pain follows him.
If a man speaks or acts with a pure thought, happiness follows him, like a shadow that never leaves him.
2011-01-07 00:24:40
Kabir:
Vast herds of lions are unheard of.
So are long columns of swans.
Rubies do not come in heaps.
The ascetic walks along the road alone.
Forests do not exist composed solely of sandalwood.
Some oceans contain no pearls.
A spiritual person is rare in this world.
2011-01-05 00:01:09
A certain bird sits in this tree. The delight of life is where it dances.
Nobody knows where the bird is, nor what all this music means.
It makes a nest where the branches make the most darkness.
It appears at dusk and disappears at dawn, and it never gives one hint of what all this means.
Nobody talks to me about this singing bird.
It has no color, nor is it free of color. It has no shape, no form, no boundaries.
It sits in the shadow thrown by love.
It lives in what cannot be reached, where time doesn’t end, where dying things don’t exist. And no one pays any attention to its coming or going.
Kabir says: You, brother, you seeker, this whole thing is a great mystery.
Tell all the wise men it would be a good thing to know where this bird spends the night.

Knowledge of the Heart --Rumi
The knowledge of people of the heart
Carries them high;
The knowledge of worshippers of the flesh
Is like a burden on them.
When knowledge tempers the heart,
It is a helper.
When knowledge caters to the flesh,
It becomes a destroyer.
将人带往高处;
God has said ‘as an ass bearing a load of books’*
Is he whose knowledge has not come from Him.
Beware! Carry not this burden
To satisfy the flesh, instead gain true knowledge.
Mount the steed of true knowledge
And let this burden of false knowledge fall from you.
Unless you drink from this cup of Godly love
You will not be free from lust,
Which will weigh you down.

True Knowledge -- Sanai Ghaznavi (d. AD 1131;AH 525)
None can know Him of himself;
His nature can only be known by Him.
Reason ran after Him, but did not make it;
Weakness hastened on the path and found Him.
It was His mercy that said, ‘Know me,’
Or else no reason or intellect could know Him.
How can our mere senses His truth perceive?
How can a nut rest on a sliding dome?
Reason can take you to His door
But only His grace can take you beyond.
By reason alone one cannot get there;
Like others before you, do not commit that folly.
His grace is our guide on this path;
His works are guide and witness to Him.
O you who are incompetent to know yourself
How can you ever know God?
Since you know not this first step
How will you know Him as He is?
没有人能靠他自己认识祂;
理性追踪他追踪祂,但一无所得;
单靠理性无法到达那儿;
祂的慈悲是我们在这道上的向导;
Gurdjieff:
“All mechanical habits, tastes and weaknesses fight against self-remembering in man”
Gurdjieff:
The worse the conditions of life, the greater the possibility for productive work, provided you work consciously.
2009-09-27 00:00:50
Gurdjieff:
“Do not be overcurious nor waste time on things that attract your attention but are not worth it. Time is precious and should not be wasted on things which have no direct relation to your aim.”
2009-09-26 00:01:16
Gurdjieff, “In order to do it is necessary to be.”
2009-09-24 00:00:10
“A modern man lives in sleep, in sleep he is born and in sleep he dies.” --Gurdjieff
This is a strange repose, to be asleep
with eyes wide open; standing, moving,
and yet so fast asleep. –Shakespeare
I have been gazing at the scenery of mountain and sky. I realize I am all of a sudden part of the landscape.
2009-09-25 00:01:34
Gurdjieff:
“For most people, even for educated and thinking people, the chief obstacle in the way of acquiring self-consciousness consists in the fact that they think they possess it.”
Epictetus said, “It is impossible for a man to learn that which he thinks he already knows.”
2009-10-04 00:02:16
Gurdjieff:
Do not be affected by externals. In themselves they are harmless; it is we who allow ourselves to be hurt by them.
2009-10-30 00:01:18
Presence is not a point of view. It is not a thought or an emotion. It is not a palpable energy or an ‘I’. It is an invisible, independent, and wordless state of pure consciousness.
This state is so simple and unobtrusive that we may at first fail to see its significance. We may even fail to see it at all because presence usually emerges for just a second or two before it disappears again—before it is swept away by imagination.
We are so accustomed to and comfortable with imagination—with the steady stream of ‘I’s from our four lower centers—that wordless presence is a foreign experience. We have to be taught how to recognize this state, how to allow it, and most importantly, how to sustain it.
In comparison to the many ‘I’s, presence appears intangible. It seems to be nothing, to not exist. And yet the reverse is true. Wordless presence is the most real thing of all and can become permanent, whereas the many ‘I’s are superficial and fleeting. As the ‘I’s keep displacing each other in a repetitive cycle of imagination, presence can remain poised in a state of divided attention. With conscious awareness, it observes our ‘I’s and our surroundings without analysis, comment, or conclusion.
The weakness of presence is that it can at any moment be mesmerized by and lured into the stream of imagination. Unless we know about this, and unless we are prepared in advance with work ‘I’s, presence can stay immersed in imagination for hours, days, weeks, and even months at a time—to the point that we spend virtually all our life in the second state of consciousness.
The appeal and pull of imagination are incredibly convincing and strong. To repeatedly break away from imagination and establish ourselves in wordless presence, we need great sincerity and determination. Above all, we need to understand that this simple state is the hidden meaning and purpose of life on earth—as objective schools have always taught.
2009-10-25 00:00:25
Whitman(1819-1892):
I see something of God in each hour of twenty-four, and each moment then,
in the faces of men and women I see God, and in my own face in the glass;
I find letters from God dropped in the street, and everyone is signed by God’s name,
And I leave them where they are, for I know that others will punctually come forever and ever.
在男人和女人的脸上我都看见神,映在镜子里的我的脸上也一样;
2009-11-05 00:01:10
This is Jami’s(1414-1492) story about the song power of the ache for freedom.
A sufi was on the path of clarity. Every day he walked the desert, and every night he walked and slept in the emptiness of God’s custody.
One night he came upon a merchant’s tent and felt the need for conversation.
He lifted the tent flap and saw a black slave in chains, unable to move, but shining with intelligence like the moon.
“Help me,” the slave whispered. “My master will not refuse a guest. Ask him to set me free.”
The merchant welcomed the sufi to his tent and brought food.
“I cannot accept your generosity until you release this poor man.”
“I will. But first listen to what I have suffered because of him! I used to have many purebred camels, beautiful animals with humps like mountains, swift as the wind over steep and flat, powerful as rhinoceri, tall and dignified as elephants. Their crossing and recrossing this desolation were the source of my existence, their bells my most wished-for sound. As they traveled, this camel driver sang songs. The camels heard and carried their loads with courage and discipline. This time, though, when we unloaded them, they fled in every direction, vanished in the desert, all but the one still tied outside my tent.”
The sufi said, “Let me hear the camel driver’s song.”
The master gestured, and the slave began. The visitor sat politely watching the tethered animal, but as longing deepened in the song, the night walker tore his clothes and fell on the ground, while the last camel snapped its rope and escaped into the darkness.
2009-11-15 00:00:47
Rumi:
No matter how fast you run,
Your shadow keeps up.
Sometimes it’s in front!
Only full overhead sun diminishes your shadow.
2009-11-29 00:00:48
SOUL AND THE OLD WOMAN --Rumi
What is the soul? Consciousness.
The more awareness, the deeper the soul,
and when such essence overflows,
you feel a sacredness around.
It's so simple to tell one who puts on a robe
and pretends to be dervish from the real thing.
We know the taste of pure water.
Words can sound like a poem but not have any juice,
no flavor to relish.
How long do you look at pictures on a bathhouse wall?
Soul is what draws you away from those pictures
to talk with the old woman
who sits outside by the door in the sun.
She's half blind, but she had what soul loves to flow into.
She's kind; she weeps.
She makes quick personal decisions, and laugh so easily.
2009-11-25 00:00:26
HABITS THAT BLIND THE PSYCHE --by Rumi
Are you so full of light you can recklessly court unconsciousness?
“Look for shade on a bright day,” they say,
not on a cloudy night when everything is already obscure.
Habits that blind the psyche throw dust in the eyes of our guides.
Toying with fermented drink, for instance.
No need to honor a pretty thief.
Keep his hands tied, or he will tie yours.
The real wine is your compassion.
The taste of that keeps the caravan pointed home.
Be reasonable!
Don’t give morning energy to what clearly hurts you!
2009-12-08 00:00:18
Pay attention to the inner one who commands you!
There is a rational soul leading your donkey
through the mountain wilderness.
When the donkey pulls away and takes off on its own,
that clear one chases, calling,
“This place is full of wolves
who would love to gnaw your bones
and suck the sweet marrow.”
This sovereign self in you is not a donkey,
but more like a stallion,
and Muhammad is the stable keeper speaking quietly,
Ta’alaw, in Arabic, Come, come. I am your trainer.

A man may be born but in order to be born he must first die. In order to die, he must first awake.
When a man awake, he can die. When he dies, he can be born.
--“In Search of the Miraculous” by Ouspensky

To awaken means to realize one’s nothingness, that is to realize one’s complete and absolute mechanicalness and one’s complete and absolute helplessness…When he begins to know himself a man sees that he has nothing that is his own, that is, that all that he has regarded as his own, his views, thoughts, convictions, tastes, habits, even faults and vices, all these are not his own, but have been either formed through imitation or borrowed from somewhere ready-made. In feeling this a man may feel his nothingness. And in feeling his nothingness a man should see himself as he really is, not for a second, not for a moment, but constantly, never forget it.

It is impossible to awaken completely all at once. One must first begin to awaken for short moments.
But one must die all at once and forever after having made a certain effort, having surmounted a certain obstacle, having taken a certain decision from which there is no going back. This would be difficult, even impossible, for a man, were it not for the slow and gradual awakening which precedes it.
When a man begins to know himself a little he will see in himself many things that are bound to horrify him. So long as a man is not horrified at himself he knows nothing about himself.
The continual consciousness of his nothingness and of his helplessness will eventually give a man the courage to ‘die,’ that is, to die, not merely mentally or in his consciousness, but to die in fact and to renounce actually and forever those aspects of himself which are either unnecessary from the point of view of his inner growth or which hinder it.
2009-12-16 00:00:31
WHEN WORDS ARE TINGED WITH LYING --Rumi
Muhammad gave this indication of how to know what’s real.
“When you feel a peaceful joy, you’re near the truth.
Unquiet and off center, jealous or greedy,
what you do seems pretentious and those around you insincere.
Speak the clearest truth you know, and let the dis-ease heal.”
If words are tinged with lying, they’re like water dripping into a oil lamp.
The wick won’t light, and the pleasure and rest of your love room will diminish.

MOVING RIVER 流动的河 --by Rumi`
When you do things from your soul, you feel a river moving in you, a joy.
When actions come from another section, the feeling disappears.
Don’t let others lead you. They may be blind or, worse, vultures.
Reach for the rope of God. And what is that?
Putting aside self-will. Because of willfulness people sit in jail,
the trapped bird’s wings are tied, fish sizzle in the skillet.
The anger of police is willfulness.
You’ve seen a magistrate inflict visible punishment.
Now see the invisible. If you could leave your selfishness,
you would see how you’ve been torturing your soul.
We are born and live inside black water in a well.
How could we know what an open field of sunlight is?
Don’t insist on going where you think you want to go.
Ask the way to the spring.
Your living pieces will form a harmony.
There is a moving palace that floats in the air with balconies and clear water flowing through, infinity everywhere, yet contained under a single tent.
2010-03-06 00:01:33
From Rumi:
O seeker,
Listen to your heart’s yearning—
Don’t sleep!
You have spent a thousand nights in the cradle of sleep—
I ask for one night.
For the sake of the Friend,
Don’t sleep!
The Loving Witness never sleeps by night,
Follow His ways:
Give yourself to Him—
Don’t sleep!
Beware of the woeful night,
When you cry out in agony: “O God”—
Don’t sleep!
That night when Death comes to welcome you—
By the dread of that night, O weary one,
Don’t sleep!
Even stones will cry when bound by the weight of those chains.
You are not a stone.
Remember those chains—
Don’t sleep!
Though the night tempts you like a beautiful maiden,
do not drink from her cup.
Fear the morning after—
Don’t sleep!
God says, “My dear ones will stay up with me at night.”
If you hear these words,
Don’t sleep!
Fear that horrible night when no refuge can be found.
Store up your provisions tonight! Beware!
Don’t sleep!
The saints find their treasure when the world is asleep;
For the sake of ever-giving love,
Don’t sleep!
圣人在世界入睡时寻找他们的珍宝;
When your spirit is old and worn
He will give you a new one,
Then you will become the pure spirit of all.
O hopeful one,
Don’t sleep!
I have told you again and again—
go to that inner silence!
But still you do not hear me.
Give me one night
And I will give you a thousand in return—
Don’t sleep!
Epictetus:
Evil does not naturally dwell in the world, in events, or in people. Evil is a by-product of forgetfulness, laziness, or distraction: it arises when we lose sight of our true aim in life.
When we remember that our aim is spiritual progress, we return to striving to be our best selves. This is how happiness is won.

2010-04-12 00:00:31
Rumi:
Be careful not to regret the past. Be a Sufi, don't talk of the past. You are the son of the moment, you are young, you have vanquished time. This short present moment must not be wasted.
2010-05-21 00:00:31
Rumi:
Take someone who doesn't keep score,
who's not looking to be richer, or afraid of losing,
who has not the slightest interest even
in his own personality: he's free.
2010-10-13 00:00:50
Ibn 'Arabi:
Of a man drowned in his words,
burned alive in sorrow.
Nothing can save him now.
2010-10-09 00:01:18
Ibn 'Arabi(1165 - 1240):
When my Beloved appears,
With what eye do I see Him?
With His eye, not with mine,
For none sees Him except Himself.

2010-10-22 00:01:38
Baba Sheikh Farid
True lovers are those
who love with all their hearts.
Those who think of another,
speak of another
are called false lovers.
2010-11-28 00:00:39
Umar Ibn al-Farid
All of me free
from the dual quality of sensation,
I, one with my essence.
2011-07-10 00:26:03
Rumi:
The Absolute works with nothing.
The workshop, the materials
are what does not exist.
Try and be a sheet of paper with nothing on it.
Be a spot of ground where nothing is growing,
where something might be planted,
a seed, possibly, from the Absolute.
2011-07-02 00:04:15
Sarmad:
A man who is lost in lust and greed
Is sick in soul and always in need;
A hungry eye is never sated.
Whoever I looked I saw this greed.
他的灵魂病了而总是在需索;
2011-05-12 05:54:33
Rumi:
The Master roamed the streets
With lamp in hand, crying:
‘I’m tired of devil and beast!
I demand a man!’
2011-03-18 23:46:44
John of the Cross:
I came into the unknown
and stayed there unknowing
rising beyond all science.
I did not know the door
but when I found the way,
unknowing where I was,
I learned enormous things,
but what I felt I cannot say,
for I remained unknowing,
rising beyond all science.
It was the perfect realm
of holiness and peace.
In deepest solitude
I found the narrow way:
a secret giving such release
that I was stunned and stammering,
rising beyond all science.
One instant is eternity;
eternity is the now.
When you see through this one instant,
you see through the one who sees.
片刻即永恒;

Dark Night -- John of the Cross (1542 - 1591)
On a darkened night,
Anxious, by love inflamed,
-- O happy chance! --
Unnoticed, I took flight,
My house at last at peace and quiet.
Safe, disguised by the night,
By the secret ladder I took flight,
-- O happy chance! --
Cloaked by darkness, I scaled the height,
My house at last at peace and quiet.
On that blessed night,
In secret, and seen by none,
None in sight,
I saw with no other guide or light,
But the one burning in my heart bright.
This guide, this light,
Brighter than the midday sun,
Led me to the waiting One
I knew so well -- my delight!
To a place with none in sight.
O night! O guide!
O night more loving than the dawn!
O night that joined
The lover with the Beloved;
Transformed, the lover into the Beloved drawn!
爱人与至爱;

Having crossed the river --Kabir
Having crossed the river,
where will you go, O friend ?
There's no road to tread,
No traveler ahead,
Neither a beginning, nor an end.
There's no water, no boat, no boatman, no cord;
No earth is there, no sky, no time, no bank, no ford.
没有水,没有船,没有船夫,没有绳索;
You have forgotten the Self within,
Your search in the void will be in vain;
In a moment the life will ebb
And in this body you won't remain.
你在空无中的探索将一无所获;
Be ever conscious of this, O friend,
You've to immerse within your Self;
Kabir says, salvation you won't then need,
For what you are, you would be indeed.
你必须投身于你的真我;

Carries them high;
The knowledge of worshippers of the flesh
Is like a burden on them.
When knowledge tempers the heart,
It is a helper.
When knowledge caters to the flesh,
It becomes a destroyer.
将人带往高处;

None can know Him of himself;
His nature can only be known by Him.
Reason ran after Him, but did not make it;
Weakness hastened on the path and found Him.
It was His mercy that said, ‘Know me,’
Or else no reason or intellect could know Him.
How can our mere senses His truth perceive?
How can a nut rest on a sliding dome?
Reason can take you to His door
But only His grace can take you beyond.
By reason alone one cannot get there;
Like others before you, do not commit that folly.
His grace is our guide on this path;
His works are guide and witness to Him.
O you who are incompetent to know yourself
How can you ever know God?
Since you know not this first step
How will you know Him as He is?
没有人能靠他自己认识祂;
理性追踪他追踪祂,但一无所得;
单靠理性无法到达那儿;
祂的慈悲是我们在这道上的向导;
I see something of God in each hour of twenty-four, and each moment then,
in the faces of men and women I see God, and in my own face in the glass;
I find letters from God dropped in the street, and everyone is signed by God’s name,
And I leave them where they are, for I know that others will punctually come forever and ever.
在男人和女人的脸上我都看见神,映在镜子里的我的脸上也一样;

2009-12-15 00:00:19
The saints find their treasure when the world is asleep;
For the sake of ever-giving love,
Don’t sleep!
圣人在世界入睡时寻找他们的珍宝;

Rumi:
Take someone who doesn't keep score,
who's not looking to be richer, or afraid of losing,
who has not the slightest interest even
in his own personality: he's free.

Ibn 'Arabi:
Of a man drowned in his words,
burned alive in sorrow.
Nothing can save him now.

Ibn 'Arabi(1165 - 1240):
When my Beloved appears,
With what eye do I see Him?
With His eye, not with mine,
For none sees Him except Himself.

Baba Sheikh Farid
True lovers are those
who love with all their hearts.
Those who think of another,
speak of another
are called false lovers.
2010-11-28 00:00:39
Umar Ibn al-Farid
All of me free
from the dual quality of sensation,
I, one with my essence.
