伊朗导演阿巴斯,诗歌与声音
1.
A bird
sings in the middle of the night;
unfamiliar
even to the birds
2.
women working the paddy fields
hum along
complaining of the lover’s infidelity
or from backache
3.
The smell of smoke
The smell of burning rue
The sound of a baby crying.
An adobe hut.
4.
I hearken
To the rustling of the wind
To the rumbling of thunder
To the music of the waves.
5.
To my ear
Hungry sparrows
Chirping noisily in the snow
Sound exactly
As they do in the spring
6.
The beating of drums
Frightens
The roadside poppies.
Will they show themselves again?
7.
Whistle of the boiling kettle:
The old nun
Is having breakfast alone.
8.
One black night
A comet
Pierces the pond’s heart—
The hiss of hot steel
In the water.
9.
The wind
Opens
The old door
And closes it
Noisily
Ten times
10.
The roar of thunder
Over the village
Interrupts
The dog’s bark
11.
An old villager
On the mountain path—
A young man’s call from afar.
12.
Starless night:
Black dog
Barking
At the newcomer
13.
The key hanging
From a woman’s neck
In a rice paddy
Falls of without a sound—
A kettle boils on the kitchen stove.
14.
The autumn sun
Shines through the window
On the flowers of a carpet.
A bee beats its head against the glass
15.
The thick fog of dawn
Over a cotton field—
The sound of thunder from afar.
16.
On the fifth day of clouds
Sunflowers
Whisper with lowered heads
17.
The dog lies in ambush
At the end of the alley
For the new beggar.
18.
Flying over a volcanic peak
The dove
Composed its first epic song.
19.
One of the nuns
Said something.
The rest broke
Into loud laughter.
20.
The moon breaks
Against the window frame—
Sound of a newborn crying.
21.
A few schoolchildren
Have put their ears
On the deserted train track
22.
The schoolchild
Walks on the old rail
Clumsily mimicking
The sound of the train.
23.
Will my ears ever hear again
The sound of the nearby river’s rebellious tide
As the snows thaw?
24.
The train shrieks
And comes to a halt
A butterfly sleeps on the rail
25.
The cry of the child—
A bird song accompanies it
Until the mother returns.
26.
A dog responds
From afar
To a she-jackal’s howls
In the moonlit night.
27.
I cry out
Across a deep valley
Expecting the echo of my voice.
A bird
sings in the middle of the night;
unfamiliar
even to the birds
