②希腊神话中的人面鸟妖：英雄阿革诺耳的儿子菲纽斯国王。因为他滥用了阿波罗赐给他的预 言家本领，所以到了高龄他便被罚作双目失明，而且还有那些可恶的怪鸟，即美人鸟搅扰他，不让他安静地进餐。它们使尽浑身解数抢劫他的食物；剩下的食物它们也要把它弄脏，叫人没法下咽，甚至叫人一靠近食物就要呕吐。
这里把护士比喻为美人鸟，意思是精神病院的药物引起很多呕吐的反应。
③美国国歌是《星光灿烂的旗帜》（The Star-Spangled Banner）这里金斯伯格用starry spangled指代美国，意思是政府没有怜悯之心。
④superhuman指的是纳粹和尼采的超人理论，纳粹以此理论来支撑屠杀犹太人的暴行。
