为响应“厕所革命”号召，助力民生工程，此次遂昌县人民政府携手Young Bird Plan并联合乐领生活（LELIVING）共同发起的乡村新公厕设计竞赛，一经发布就自带焦点引来无数目光，之前31强的大众票选更是将此次竞赛又推向一个新高潮。在上一轮的公布中，我们看到来自全球的建筑设计师们都极具风格的大胆设计，不仅极大的尊重了在地文化，更是打造出独一无二的特色标签。那么，经过激烈的票选晋级的10强作品究竟有哪些独到之处呢？接下来，让我们看看选手都是如何阐释自己的作品的。

In response to the appeal of “Toilet revolution”, Suichang People’s Government, Young Bird Plan and LeLiving launched 2018 Suichang “Neo-Toilet” International Design Competition. Upon release, the competition catches eyes from all over the world, while the public voting for Top 31 pushes it to the peak. We can see from the last finalists announcement that global architects show their audacious design style based on maximum respect for local culture. So what makes the Top 10 designs stand out after tense public voting? Please see blow interpretations of Top 10 finalists by the designers.

我们关注建筑与自然、人与空间、结构与材料，更重要的是，我们关注建造，关注可以解决普遍问题的类型建筑。参加这次竞赛是因为竞赛的主题和我们所关心的问题紧密相关，我们希望通过这次真实建造的竞赛去检验我们关于设计的一些思考的可行性，同时还期待看到对于类似问题的多样解答。

We focus on the relationship between architecture and nature, people and space, structure and materials. More importantly, we value architecture itself, which can solve general problems. We participate in this competition because its theme is closely connected with our concerns. We expect to verify the possibility of our design through this competition and we are willing to find more similar problems being solved.

About the site:

茶园村的场地环境对我的触动很深，让我们意识到好山好水并不只在古画之中，中国的乡村应该有许多这种极具特征的自然环境，非常值得我们去欣赏、观察和发掘。遂昌的自然环境和自然资源非常丰富，但同时也面临着人口流失，活力不足的危机。政府引导开展的一系列乡村建筑和环境改造，有机会将乡村的自然资源实实在在的转化为吸引城市人群和激活乡村的源动力，Young Bird Plan 竞赛就是其中一次非常好的尝试。

The landscape of the Tea Plantation Village impresses me a lot, and I realize verdant mountains and water not only exist on ancient paintings, but also in Chinese villages which deserve to be appreciated, observed and discovered. Suichang County has abundant natural resources, while lack of vitality due to its outflow of villagers. As a result, the government takes actions to rebuild rural architecture and surroundings, which may attract more urban residents and activate the village by taking advantage of rural resources. The competition organized by Young Bird Plan is absolutely a good attempt.

2. 赤土小屋/TERRA COTTA HUT

Design Interpretation:

建筑就像植物，必须深深扎根于当地，才能生存、呼吸、生长，脱离地方环境的建筑就好比一棵没有根基的树。我们一直认为，伟大的建筑必须与当地的风土人情紧密相连。造型优美、细节完善的建筑令人赏心悦目，但同时，归属感的营造也是必不可少的一个部分。

We believe that great architecture emerges from an innate connection to the land and the people. We admire buildings with great forms and exciting details, but miss a sense of belonging when it lacks dialogue with the context. To us, building are like plants. They live, breath, and nurture through their roots into the soil. A building without connections to its context is like a tree without roots.

在参赛之前，我们对遂昌的了解并不多。竞赛文档中最吸引我们的是茶园村公厕基地文本说明，茶园村的社会结构、历史文化意义、文化变迁是中国成千上万个村子的缩影。我们被茶园村的文化和珍贵的历史遗产吸引，不想看到它们湮灭在时间中。也希望通过此次竞赛能参与到村庄现代化的进程。

Prior to the competition, we had verylimited knowledge about Suichang. One of the most intriguing piece of documentsfor us was the Tea Village Social Cultural Report. Despite its unique heritage,the cultural phenomena described in the report is not an isolated case. Thesocial formation, historic establishment, and cultural transition of the TeaVillage is an extract portrait of what thousands of Chinese countrysidevillages are experiencing.

3. 陌上·叶 / Leaf in Field

Design Interpretation:

陌上叶的设计理念是竞赛设计要求的细化。设计更多地对如何通过基础设施的营造，盘活村落的活力并使村落可以可持续发展进行思考，而非只是简单地设计一个厕所。遂昌公厕设计是关于一场共建共享的探索。我们希望通过厕所的建设调动村民改变村容村貌的积极性，进而以点带面，完善村落基础服务设施的建设，为村落的文旅升级与转型的战略布局提供基础。

The design concept of Leaf in Field is refinement required by this competition. We have thoroughly considered how to activate the village and promoted its sustainable development through infrastructure construction, which is not a simply public toilet design. This competition is an exploration of achieving shared growth through collaboration. Villagers are encouraged to rebuild their hometown through this competition, which may further improve infrastructure service so that culture and tourism in village will be updated.

在竞赛之前，我们对遂昌并没有过多的了解。在资料收集阶段，我们对遂昌的地形地貌、水文地理、文化历史等有一个大致的认识。遂昌县致力于将中国传统农耕方式与现代生产销售模式相结合，也处于摸索未来村落生活方式与美学的发展道路上。基于这一点，我们认为遂昌是一个乡村建设的先行者。

Before this competition, we know little about Suichang. We come to have a generally knowledge about its landscape, geography, culture and history during information collection. Suichang is committed to combining Chinese traditional farming methods and modern mode of production and sales, and continues to explore lifestyle in future villages and its aesthetics development. Based on that, we believe Suichang leads the field of rural construction.

4. 留云·听泉/Liuyun & Tingquan

Design Interpretation:

浙江遂昌是一个拥有1800年历史的美丽村落，村中的坡屋顶建筑顺应地形，层层退叠。基于此，厕所的设计必须遵循融入环境，传承文化的原则。因此，在设计中留云轩是通过一个个单体模块的组合获得与当地建筑和远山相契合的意象。听泉轩则是通过折叠的木板与石块的穿插获得面向小溪的休憩空间，建筑背山面水，厚重的石块加上轻巧的木板与山峦流水相映成趣，观远山，听泉水，怡然自得。

Suichang County, Zhejiang Province is beautiful village with a history of 1,800 years. The sloping roof conforms to the landscape. Therefore, the design must blend with local environment and demonstrate its culture. In the design of Tingquan, you can see a harmonious picture of local architecture and distant mountains through the combination of single modules, while in the design of Liuyun, resting room facing rivers is designed through a cross between board and stone. Facing rivers and backing on mountains, the architecture and surroundings set each other off beautifully. People may watch the distant mountains and listen to rivers there. What a enjoyable lifestyle!

第一次了解遂昌时，我们就被茶园村的自然环境所深深吸引。而在进一步的接触中，更是了解到竞赛基地不仅拥有优越的自然环境还有着丰富的文化传统。不仅有茶园村的传统武术文化和茶园文化，更是有遂昌的侠客文化，对遂昌文化的认知成为了我们本次设计的重要出发点。

We were deeply attracted by its natural environment when we first learnt Suichang. And we have a further understanding of local culture and history during the exploration. There are traditional martial culture and tea plantation culture in village, as well as knightly culture, all of which become the starting points of our design.

5. 零碳公厕/Zero-carbon Toilet

Design Interpretation:

“汝弃之物，彼器之物”。弃物非弃物，弃物转器物，器物自弃物，弃物乃器物。”设计理念来源于道家思想，以遂昌在地文化、茶园村自然地景、景区废弃物再生等三方面展现为主，将当地手工技艺与零碳建筑技术相结合，把公厕作为自然与人类的连接体，实现天人合一。

As the saying goes that things abandoned is things we regarded. Our design concept origins from Taoism. It focuses on the local culture of Suichang, the natural scenery of tea gardens, and the recycling of scenic wastes. It combines local handicraft skills with zero-carbon building technology with public toilets as natural and human. The connecting body realizes the unity between human beings and nature.

本次作品所在基地的茶园村山清水秀，古村落形态保留着传统记忆，是不可多得的古镇聚落，让人不禁感慨于它的淳朴与自然，让人想安定于这世外桃源之间，同时也认识到了传统聚落的力量。而最让我们感动的地方在于茶园村虽然是位于深山的闭塞村庄，但在保留传统文化的前提下，努力摸索探寻新的突破。

The Tea Plantation Village is really a beautiful place with verdant mountains and water. As a rare ancient villages group, this village maintains its traditional memory. People can’t help to be overwhelmed by its nature and are willing to live in such a fairyland. What touches me most is that though the village is remote from the world, it strives to explore new development based on the traditional culture preservation.

6. 悬亭/Hanging Pavilion

Design Interpretation:

厕所作为一种传统的私密空间如何通过设计策略成为创造公共空间或者促进交往的机会，从而作为乡村振兴的契机是我们的设计出发点。我们将乡村公厕理解为改善村民生活质量的私密空间，同时也是促进村民交往的公共场所。私密与公共，这一对看似对立的关系因为结构而得以共存。

As a traditional private space, how a toilet can offer an opportunity to create public space or promote interaction through design strategies, and further becomes the moment for rural revitalization? Based on that, our design came into being. We believe the rural public toilet is private space to improve villagers’ living standards, but also public spot for their communication. Public and private, which seems completely contrary co-exist in our design due to the structure.

在参加竞赛之前只知道，遂昌茶园村今年的威尼斯建筑双年展之旅在国内外引起了不小的反响。但是，这次竞赛为我们提供了一个很好的机会去了解这个美丽的乡村。富有层次的梯田，灵秀的山体，以及被山体包裹着的非常原生态的村庄给我们留下了很深的印象。这种自然的气质非常打动人，建筑本身的人工属性一不留神就会破坏这种氛围，所以我们认为设计应该趋简，隐逸含蓄，避免多余的手法。

Prior to the competition, I learnt the Tea Plantation Village of Suichang due to Venice Architecture Biennale 2018 which aroused hot topic domestically. However, this competition offer an opportunity for us to learn more about this beautiful village. What impress me most are the layered terraces, scenery mountains and original ecological village surrounded by mountains. The nature there touches me a lot, and architecture may break the pace without comprehensive thinking. Therefore, we believe the less the better.

7. 乡舍/Village Space Joint

Design Interpretation:

本次方案选址在村口节点停车场边，建筑作为进入村庄的空间节点。同时，方案也很注重在地营造，选取山中石材为基座，木材为屋顶梁柱；在地形表达中，建筑本身成为山中的景观，屋顶脱离基座顺应山势向下如同鸟翼；而当身处其中，亦可于大屋檐下下远眺山下整片景观，气势磅礴。

My design scheme is for the parking lot at the gate of village, the architecture as a sign to enter the village. Meanwhile, the design focuses on the utilization of local materials. The pedestal is made of stones in the mountains, and roof is made of local wood. In terms of topography, the architecture itself becomes a part of landscape in mountains and the roof seems like a pinion flying along mountains. When you are in it, you can overlook the whole landscape under the eaves.

高中语文课本中的《牡丹亭》中第一次认识了遂昌，那时候隐约觉得是一个风景秀美而浪漫的地方，《舌尖上的中国》中的冬笋美食又让人心生向往。而在关注乡建的过程中再次认识了遂昌。三次相遇，每一次遂昌都会为我们带来惊喜。

I first learnt Suichang when I was a high school student reading The Peony Pavilion. In my memory, Suichang is romantic place with beautiful landscape. The second time I met Suichang was when i saw the bamboo food in A Bite of China, a Chinese documentary TV series on the history of food, eating and cooking. And this time I meet Suichang again through the rural construction competition. I was really surprised by Suichang each time meeting it.

8. 亭·下/ The Scenery Underground

设计理念解读：

Design Interpretation:

设计理念来自对场地的理解与想象，将村口的厕所嵌入地下并朝向悬崖一侧打开，不仅创造了可以远观的村落第一印象，同时也为人们提供了在风景与土地中上下漫游的体验。

My design concept origins from my imagination and understanding of the site. The toilet at the gate of the village is embedded underground and faces cliffs, through which people can overlook the whole village. Also it provides an opportunity for people to enjoy the underground scenery.

About the site:

参赛之前并不了解遂昌。但参赛后对于遂昌的心情是很复杂的，一方面被村子所处的大山大水和自然环境所折服，但另一方面，意识到茶园村和中国大多数农村一样不可避免的面临的衰败的命运，期待新的资源的引入能为村子带来新的活力。希望此次公厕的设计竞赛是一个好的开端。

After we absorbed the information about Suichang, our feelings were mixed. On the one hand, the picturesque village impressed us a lot. On the other hand, we realized that rural areas in China seemed doomed to decline. However, new resources are being introduced into these places, in order to give them a new lease of life. We really hope this competition will be a good beginning.

9.重新定义的山水 / REDEFINED LANDSCAPE

Design Interpretation:

设计崇尚三个原则：简明，真实，有机。这也正是中国古建筑的三大特点。本次设计实际上是在对中国特有的这么一个“山水”意象进行了一个“重新定义”，让公厕能融入到遂昌这幅中式山水画中，而且公厕本身又表征山水意象，这种山水意象不仅是浮在外表上，更是要和公厕的核心功能紧密结合：供人使用的空间和污水的处理。最终的目的，实际上是对现在乡村全是“欧式小洋楼”现象的一种抗争吧，中国的乡村，应该还是要有中国的味道。

My design philosophy can be summarized into three points, viz. Simple, Real and Organic, which are also the characteristics of ancient buildings in China. My scheme is a redefinition of the typical countryside and its landscape. And my building is designed to be blended in the local environment where seems like a Chinese landscape painting. What’s more, the basic functions of toilet have been carefully considered. It has enough spaces for users and unique water purification system. European-style houses are overspreading in the rural areas nowadays. My objective is to add Chinese flavors to these places in the long term.

我是从本次的竞赛开始了解遂昌的，这个地方给人的气质打破了外省人之前对浙江的刻板印象。我所看到的遂昌，应该来讲和一千年前马远看到的山河是一脉相承，气质上有那种中国所固有的气韵。遂昌，有一种不事雕琢的山河秀丽，这种不事雕琢在极速变化的时代愈发显的难能可贵。

My knowledge of Suichang started from this competition. This place gives a new impression of Zhejiang for me. I see the same landscape Ma Yuan enjoyed one thousand years ago. Suichang features an aura of Chinese typicality. The mountains and rivers are virginal and pure, which are increasingly precious in the age of overdevelopment.

10. 凹凸厕所 / Concave-convex Restroom

Design Interpretation:

根植中国传统文化，以策展逻辑推进的当代极简设计。凹凸是中国文字，是阴阳和男女的图腾，也是全世界都能辨识的符号，设计一对凹凸厕所，是这次遂昌厕所革命给到我的一次机会，也是我近年反思设计，尝试用“凹凸”的思维方法去解决设计问题的一个推演。

This project is a modern minimalist design conceived on the basis of curation logic and traditional Chinese culture. “凹凸” are rare Chinese characters that can be understood by the whole world. They are metaphors of male and female, representing three-dimensional yin and yang. The competition has given me a chance to solve design problems with the thinking method of “凹凸”.

遂昌是参赛后才了解知道的，但浙江的乡村并不陌生，大多是鱼米之乡，在全国范围内浙江的美丽乡村实践是走在前面的。遂昌它所折射出的乡村生态，最为触动我的地方是和谐，自然和新老建筑的和谐，村民和政府的和谐，本地人和外来者的和谐……

Although I didn’t know Suichang before, rural countryside in Zhejiang is familiar to me. Most of them have abundant fertile land, and are trailblazers of beautiful village’s practices in the whole country. The harmony of Suichang where is a reflection of typical countryside in China touches me deeply. The harmonious relationships between the nature and buildings, the villagers and the government, the natives and the newcomers…
