Every time the bucks went clattering

Over Oklahoma

A firecat bristled in the way.

Wherever they went,

They went clattering,

Until they swerved,

In a swift, circular line,

To the right,

Because of the firecat.

Or until they swerved,

In a swift, circular line,

To the left,

Because of the firecat.

The bucks clattered.

The firecat went leaping,

To the right, to the left,

And

Bristled in the way.

Later, the firecat closed his bright eyes

And slept.

简介：这首诗选自史蒂文斯的第一部是诗集Harmonium。诗用词简单，但却难懂。学界对诗歌的意境有诸多讨论：有人说，这是史蒂文斯对自然生存环境的观察，也有人说这是在讨论现代艺术中的本土化和国际化之间的冲突，一百个人心中，有一百只火猫。有趣的是，史蒂文斯最初的版本用的是 Earthly （ Relate to the earth or human life)，而不是后来的Earthy ( suggestive of earth or soil)。此外，最早的 anecdotes 也改为了 anecdote，史蒂文斯原本计划要写一系列共六首大地轶事，后来却只出了第一首。背后原因不得而知，但诗题的这两处改变却给读者留下了更广阔的想象空间。
