Why Women Kill S01E01
Misery loves company. ——Naomi

You know what they say: It's not a party until someone breaks something, and that was expensive, so we musy be having a marvelous time. ——Simone
It's funny, my first husband liked booze more than me. My second liked cocaine more than me. My third likes boys more than me. Am I the only one here seeing a pattern?——Simone
I've always thought of myself as this fabulous woman. But how fabulous can I be if nobody wants to love me?——Simone
Beth:I've decided not to say anything. If I put Rob on the defensive, it will affect our marriage.
Sheila: He's committing adultery. That's supposed to affect your marriage.
Beth: I'm just going to work harder at being a good wife. To remind Rob why he loves me. And then, hopefully……
Sheila: There is another option.
Beth: What's that?
Sheila: Confront the girl.……Go to her diner and make a scene.
Beth: Sheila, she might not even know that Rob is married.
Sheila: Oh, those tramps always know. Threaten to tell her boss unless she stops seeing Rob. Scare her to death.
Beth: I suppose that could work. But I just don't know where I would find the courage.
Sheila: It's right here, at the bottom of this glass.
Why Women Kill S01E02
I lived next door to a nice married couple. They seemed very much in love. Until the night someone heard gunshots, and the police were called. They said one of those nice people had been murdered.
I asked my mother how something like that could happen. All she said was, "Marriage is harder than it looks."

Years later, a rich couple moved into that same house. I always thought they seemed happy. Until the police came back, and I saw the body. The rumer was one of the rich people had killed the other.
I asked my fiancée what she thought had happened. All she said was, "Death is cheaper than divorce."

Last year yet another couple came to live in the house next door. They were young and seemed to have so much to live for. But, sadly, I heard the sirens one more time. I arrived at the crime scene to have my worst fears confirmed.
I turned to my wife and said, "Another love story has ended in murder. I can't believe it."
My wife looked at me and said, "I can."

You know how housewives can be. They forget that their husbands need more than hot meals and clean socks.
Men want excitement and passion. Lots of women just forget to put in that kind of an effort.
They don't change their hair. They always wear the same dowdy clothes.
You've already given me more than enough to chew on.

He (Duke) was always accuing me of cheating on him. Of course, I was, but I would have appreciated a little trust.——Jade
Beth
If you're not going to notice what I'm wearing, why should I bother to wear anything at all?
You want to see th same old Beth? Fine. Here she is in all her glory.
Sometimes old dogs need new tricks.——Sheila
Sex is how women gain power over men. ——Sheila

Wives always say they'd want to know if their husbands wer cheating, but they never forgive the person who tells them.——Naomi
You're drowning in the routine of your existence. I know because I'm drowning alongside you. But maybe if we help each other... we can survive.
Why Women Kill S01E03
It begins quite slowly.
With a look.
Or a gesture.
And once the invitation is accepted...the tango begins.
It is a dance of anticipation.
Seduction.
Desire.
And love.
You know, some say it takes two to tango.
But sometimes, lurking in the dark... is a third.
Now, if you choose to dance with him, be prepared to deal with the consequences.
For passion can turn to jealousy.
Love can become violent.
Yes. The tango exists to remind us the greatest love stories... End in death.

Naomi: People can care deeply for one another, it doesn't always mean that they should stay married.
Karl: You see, this is where I think commitment becomes essential. Everyone makes mistakes, but if love is there, then there's a path to redemption.

April金句:
Married men who cheat also know how to lie.

Tommy: Why do you keep defending him? He's lied to you, he's cheated on you and he won't leave your home.
Simone: The situation is complicated.
Tommy: Well, yeah, it must be, because it makes no sense. You should hate him.
Simone: I know, I know, it's just... He's my husband. He puts up with my extravagance and my nonsense. He tells me I'm beautiful when I need to hear it the most and... he makes me laugh in a way that no one else can. One day, I will divorce Karl, but I will never hate him, because I can't.

“I will divorce Karl, but I will never hate him.”
Why Women Kill S01E04
Your mother and I are sorting through some issues, and I'm not a perfect huaband, and maybe Brad won't be either, but love is always a risk, and I know it's easy to think this is never going to last, so why don't I end it now, but...the chance for love doesn't come around every day.
One must think long and hard before one casts it aside.

Beth: I have one question.
Rob: What's that? 什么?
Beth: Why did you want to try marijuana?
Rob: I thought it would be fun to break the rules. Does that sound stupid?
Beth: Not at all.
Rob: My life feels like one of those stupid swan napkins. It's rigid, it's all tight folds and sharp edges. And people admire it, but it takes so much work. And it's goddamned exhausting.
Beth: Course it is. We've forgotten to find time in our life for joy.
Rob: Joy? Hell, I'd settle for a few laughs now and then.
Beth: I would love to hear you laugh again. I'd break every rule in the book for that.
Rob: I'm starting to realize you're not the good little girl I thought you were.
Beth: No, sir. I'm a rebel.

The purpose of an autopsy is to provide clarity.
How did the victim die?
Was death the result of a gunshot?
Stabbing?
Poison?
How someone is killede is easy to understand.
Why it happened, that's never so simple.
But it always begins with a choice.
It might be a decision to conduct a tawdry affair.
A plan to keep secrets from a loved one.
Or an agreement to bring a stranger into your bed.
Yes, people make all sorts of questionable choices.
Of course, that's what keeps me in business.
If you vist your local morgue, you'll find the bodies of good people who made bad choices.
Some engaged in reckless love affairs.
Some invited violent strangers into their home.
And some kept dark secrets from those they loved.
Yes, it's choices like these that lead to death.
And more importantly, murder.
Why Women Kill S01E05
Police: If you're a couple from Pasadena, why are you going to a motel in Azusa?
Simone: We are having an illicit affair. We've driven 30 miles to avoid being spotted by his mother, who is my best friend, and my husband, who is gay.
Police: Well, I got to give you points for creativity. Have fun, kid!
illicit [ i‘lisit ] adj.

Simone: Mother said, "If you want to sleep on expensive sheets, choose wisely who you sleep next to."

Taylor
Men never change.
They just get better at keeping secrets.

Simone: I'm trapped upstairs.
Karl: Upstairs? Would this have anyhing to do with the affair you're not having?
Simone: Now is not the time!
Karl: Oh, what a nasty tone. I think I'm gonna hang up.
Simone: All right, all right, fine, fine. I'm having an affair. Now can you please come over here and create a distraction so I can get out?
Karl: What are husbands for.

Karl这最后一句真的点睛,让我想到了Simone之前说过的,the irony is just delicious... lol.
Rob
I’m not leaving my wife!!
Rob金句:
When you start using the "L word", a guy can sober up pretty quick.
L word就是“love”,这里渣男不想重复这个词,所以用L word指代,有时候日常对话中会用这种方式指代前面说过的某个词,比如,A在某个对话中用了fuck这个词,B觉得很不雅,就可以提醒他:it's better not using the F word.

K: So... Tommy Harte.
S: I know he's a bit young...
K: A bit? When I met him, he was eight.
S: And you were heterosexual(直男).
K: And now this child is your lover? Who knew there was such a fine line between adultery and day care?
S: Bugger off, Karl. You have no right to judge me.
K: I'm not judging you, I'm teasing. If anything, I'm happy for us. Drink?
S: Brandy. What do you mean you're happy for us?
K: Well, don't you see? We don't need to get a divorce. We have stumbled into the perfect arrangement. You will have your lovers and I will have mine, and then we will come home to sparkling conversation.
It's very European.
S: It doesn't bother you that I'm having sex with someone else?
K: Darling, I'm gay. Look, for me, sex with a woman is like emptying the dishwasher. I mean, I'll do it if I'm asked, but if someone else volunteers, I won't complain.
S: I don't understand. How can you not be jealous?
K: Sorry, wait, you want me to be jealous of Tommy Harte?
S: He's jealous of you!
K: So he should be. I'm the husband.
S: Not for long.
K: Oh, what are you gonna do, divorce me and marry Tommy?
S: Maybe I will.
K: Oh, good. Well, I'll get you a gift. Where will you be registered? Fisher-Price?
(Fisher-Price
S: Everything is not a joke, Karl. You're not being funny, you're being cruel.
K: Oh, darling, I'm not trying to be cruel. I love you.
S: No, you don't. Not the way I need. I want a man who loves me so much that he would kill another man if I slept with someone else. And I'm never gonna get that from you, am I?
K: No, but you're my best friend.
S: It's not enough!

Why Women Kill S01E06
It's funny about people.
They come into our lives every day and you never know who will play the most important part.
A total stranger might be the one to save you or destory you.

K: Oh, Simone, what are you doing here?
S: What a silly question! You know how much I adore our little gallery.
K: Oh please, you haven't stopped by in months.
S: Once we begin negotiating our settlement, I know you'll fight for this place. You'll tell the judge it should go to you because I never helped out. Well, here I am, helping out.
Excuse me, do you have any Lichtenstein prints?
S: We're talking. Do you mind?(超凶)
K: And with charm like that on our sales staff, these paintings should just fly off the walls.(既然我们的销售人员这么有魅力,这些话应该飞速地就被买走了。
No Tommy today?
S: We spoke this morning.
K: Oh yes? Was that on the phone or did you roll over and tap him on the shoulder?
S: I suggested we take a break. My divorce lawyer feels an ongoing affair with a teenager could make me seem unsympathetic.
K: You've hired a lawyer?
S: Bernie Morton. He did my first two divorces, so he knows what I like.
K: No, no, no. We-we agreed we weren't gonna get divorced until after Amy's wedding.
S: We agreed not to announce it till then. That doesn't mean we can't get the ball rolling. (get the ball rolling就是 to get a process started,开始做一些事)
K: But there's so much coming at us in the next few weeks.
I mean, Amy's Oklahoma in-laws are turning up tomorrow en masse. en masse=in a mass; all together; as a group)
S: Oh, god, I'm dreading that dinner. (dread,担心,惧怕) I spoke to Brad's mother for two minutes on the phone, I already can't stand her.
K: Exactly. If we're fighting each other, how will we have the energy to properly hate them?
S: After what you've put me through, I have more than enough rage to go around. (go around, 我觉得此处的不定式用法,用来表示满足大家的需求,表示satisfy the needs of a group. 如:There were not enough chairs to go around, so some of us sat on the floor. There is plenty of popcorn to go around. )

Jade: Don't you think she'll be angrier if we don't tell her and then she finds out anyway?
Eli: It-well, see? That's where the everpopular "Take it go our graves" philosophy would come into play.
………………You're right, right. Anything less than full honesty is a betrayal.

Rob:It hurts to remember, but it'd be worse to forget.

April: My father was a doctor. I used to watch my mother apply makeup to cover up her black eyes. She would smear green concealer to cover the bruise, and then she would apply a second layer of concealer that matched her skin tone. And then she would do the same thing to the other side so that people wouldn't notice the difference.
Beth: That's awful!
April: No, here's the awful part. My whole family knew what was going on. Aunts, uncles, cousins-- they all knew what he was doing, and they just looked the other way. I hate people that look the other way.
Beth:

look the other way,我觉得比较好的英文释义是: to intentionally overlook a wrongdoing, or,deliberately overlook something, especially something of an illicit nature 。 I know I didn't follow the rules, but can't you just look the other way?

感觉这里Beth有被April的话触动到,所以后面当Rob任由Mary被丈夫带走时,Beth很生气,因为她不想成为look the other way的人。
Taylor: That's just shining a light on the cracks in our relationship.
shine a light on the cracks in our relationship,

K: I've spent my whole damn life controlling myself, hiding the central fact of my existence so I wouldn't disappoint my family, my friends or my wife. Hector was the only person who ever saw me for the man I truly am, not the one I was pretending to be. You have no idea what he meant to me.
S: Stop romanticizing your grubby little fling.
K: I loved him! He asked me to run away with him, but I had made a commitment to you, so I chose to stay.
S: I'm your wife. Am I supposed to be grateful that you didn't walk out?
K: I just want you to see it from my perspective for once. Just think about what it may have cost me to honor the vow I made to you. So no, Simone, I do not expect you to be grateful for the sacrifice I made, but for fuck's sake, at least acknowledge it.

Why Women Kill S01E07
S: I was up all night thinking to myself, "I wish I'd never married that man. He's stolen the last ten years of my life.”...Then I started thinking about our time together. You taught me how to ski, how to tango. How to speak French.
K: Ask for more chardonnay is not really speaking French.
S: Most importantly, you taught me how to laugh at myself. The truth is, you haven't stolen anything from me. If anything, you've given me more than I deserved.
K: I'm sorry, the suspense is slightly killing me. Where is this going?
S: Follow me. Just to be clear, I still think we should get a divorce.
K: Uh, yes, I assumed as much.
S: But just because I can't have you as a husband doesn't mean I can't have you as a friend. And I do like to keep my friends happy.
K: Hector!
I have never loved you more than I do in this moment.
S: Please, Karl, not in front of the boyfriend!

Simone: I still want us to have our movie nights. You wouldn't have to drive home after cocktails.
Karl: Our friends are going to desprise us...When people split up, they prefer venom and fireworks, tears and accusations.
Simone: So childish and petty. Besides, we did that last week.
venom /ˈvenəm/ ,指毒汁、毒液(a toxic substance produced by some animals ),也指愤恨的感情或语言( a spiteful malicious feeling or state of mind )。

Tommy
Tommy:I should be able to buy diamonds for the woman I love. Relax. I don't expext you to say it back. I gave you that so you'd see that I'm not just some kid who can't play in your league. The diamonds are real because my feelings are.

Karl: I have spent my entire life putting off things that I thought there'd be time for later. Open doors don't stay open forever.

Why Women Kill S01E08
Beth: Miracles happen every day.

Taylor:
Truth is, I fell in love with Jade without really knowing who she was. And what's worse is I brought her into my home. Now she's sleeping in my bed and I'm living in a hotel.
I need her out of my house. But she's enabling my drug addict husband and I don't think he'll just let her go. Not to mention the fact that you and I both know how intensely she can react when she feels threatened.
If I'm gonna get her out of the house, I need to be smart. I need leverage.

Why Women Kill S01E09
Emily:
My name is Emily Stanton. I was killed over two years ago, but my mama still thinks about me every day. Even when she's just putting on lipstick, she'll suddenly remember how much she loved me.
I look down on Mama from heaven. I watch her because I'm worried about her. She's not happy, but Daddy doesn't know because she keeps smiling.
Mama is very angry with him, and I have a feeling that she's gonna do something awful.

Edmund (Tommy's father):
My name is Edmund Harte. I was 57 when I died. That's how my bitch wife became my widow. I check in from time to time to see how my kid is doing 'cause I'm worried about him.
His mother is desperate to control him, but Tommy's a man now, able to make his own choices. And I know Naomi is going to fight him every step of the way.
Good luck, kid.

Verna (Jade's foster mother):
My name is Verna Roy. I was 32 when I died in a fire. At the time, I was a foster mother to this one right here. I don't like to talk bad about the living, but this gal's pure poison.
I can see she's now living in a fancy house with pretty things. That means some man has fallen for her act. Stupid son of a bitch!
He don't know what she's capable of, but I got a feeling he's about to find out.

Eli: Maybe she does take advantage of me, but at least she builds me up. She doesn't make me feel like a fuck-up who's just destined to crash and burn.
S: We are a family. When bad things happen, we're supposed to support each other.
A: The way I see it, he is supporting me by staying away. I have to call my guests and tell them it's safe to come.
S: Amy, think of what you're doing. You're choosing a few cowardly bigots over the man who raised you.
A: I'm the bride. It's my day, and I want it to be perfect.
S: I am sorry if Karl's deadly illness is scraping some of the glitter off of your event, but let's face it, this won't be your last wedding.

scrap, /skræp/ , to not continue with a system or plan; to get rid of something that is no longer useful or wanted, often using its parts in new ways.
Simone to Naomi:
You have spread your poison and made him a pariah. He has lost friends, been banned from his daughter's wedding, had his home vandalized. God, he's sick. He does not deserve to spend his last days hounded by scandal and shame.... I am begging. Blame me, destroy me. I promise I won't fight back. But please leave Karl out of it.
pariah, /pəˈraɪ.ə/ ,a person who is not accepted by a social group, especially because he or she is not liked, respected, or trusted.
vandalize, /ˈvæn.dəl.aɪz/ ,to intentionally damage property belonging to other people.
hound, /haʊnd/ ,to chase someone or refuse to leave someone alone, esp. because you want to get something from that person.

Why Women Kill S01E10
Tommy: You're pretty.
Simone: Kids say the cutest things.
Karl: Hands off, young man. She's spoken for.

What you need is to give the waterworks a rest. I made you my offer, so either take it or get the hell out.

Beth: I need to speak to you privately.
Mary: What's going on?
Beth: I've thought of a way to solve our respective marital difficulties... I've come up with a plan on how to kill our husbands. Please invite me in. This is the sort of thing we should discuss over coffee.
...
Beth: That's the plan. Any thoughts?
Mary: It's crazy. We'd never get away with it.
Beth: But we would. Think about it. Technically speaking, we wouldn't be doing anything illegal.
Mary: How could we be sure that Rob and Ralph would even swallow the bait?
Beth: That's the beauty of the plan. It's tailor-made to fit their horribly predictable personalities.
Mary: What if someone discovers what we've done?
Beth: I don't plan on telling anyone. Do you?
Mary: I don't know. Ralph deserves to die. And...after everything Rob's put you through, he's just as bad. But the Bible says, "Thou shalt not kill." God might not understand.
Beth: Maybe not. But I'm sure God's wife will.

Tommy: All of her friends at the country club, the ones that she turned against you and Karl, they finally found out Mom's crazy and they dropped her.
Simone: Oh, poor Naomi.
Tommy: "Poor Naomi?" Come on, you must be a little pleased.
Simone: The woman I'm trying to become would draw no satisfaction from this at all. Fortunately, I'm not that woman just yet.
Tommy: I try to tell people I'm the one who pursued you, but they refuse to believe it was my fault.
Simone: You say that like we did something we should regret. I don't regret one moment we shared.
Now go. Have the most wonderful summer of your life. Study art. Drink wine. Think of me every now and then.
Tommy: I'll think of you constantly. I love you.
Simone: I won't be the last woman you say that to. But I'm proud to be the first.

Simone的哲学: Just because I have to shop with the frumps doesn't mean I have to dress like them.
frump, /frʌmp/ ,a woman who wears old-fashioned clothes that do not look attractive.

Simone: I hope to have a very happy life in this house.
Beth: A happy life isn't hard to come by. The trick is to not regret the choices you made along the way.

I ended up living a very rich life, once I stopped worrying about money.

Taylor
For us, it turns out... Less is more.

Home is where my family is.
