语篇导读：这是一篇记叙文。本文讲述已故姑妈哈丽特在有生之年与仆人之间的故事。仆人将“山墙庄园”打扫得一层不染，但都难以让姑妈称心如意。贝西本是姑妈最欢喜的仆人，因勤劳和高效得到赏识而当上大管家，但是由于喜欢喝酒，并且因此捅了一次篓子后，贝西被解雇。自此，姑妈一直到死去都没有找到理想的佣人。 今天精读第49篇文章第2段
①Bessie worked for Aunt Harriet for three years.②During that time she so gained my aunt's confidence, that she was put in charge ofthe domestic staff.③Aunt Harriet could not find words to praise Bessie's industriousnessand efficiency.④In addition toall her otherqualifications, Bessie was an expert cook.⑤She acted the role of the perfect servant for three years before Aunt Harriet discovered her 'little weakness'.⑥After being absent fromthe Gables for a week, my aunt unexpectedly returned one afternoon with a party of guests and instructed Bessie to prepare dinner.⑦No only was themeal well below the usual standard, but Bessie seemed unable to walk steadily.⑧She bumped intothe furniture and kept mumbling about the guests.⑨When she came in with the last course -- a huge pudding -- she tripped on the carpet and the pudding went flying through the air, narrowly missed my aunt, and crashed on the dining table with considerable force.⑩Though this caused great mirthamong the guests, Aunt Harriet was horrified.⑪She reluctantly came to the conclusion that Bessie was drunk.⑫The guests had, of course, realized this from the momentBessie opened the door for them and, long before the final catastrophe, had had a difficult time tryingto conceal their amusement.⑬The poor girl was dismissed instantly.⑭After her departure, Aunt Harriet discovered that there were piles of empty wine bottles of all shapes and sizes neatly stackedin what had once been Bessie's wardrobe.⑮They had mysteriously found their waythere from the wine cellar!

词汇小学堂
pollution /pə'luːʃ(ə)n/:the process of making air, water, soil, etc. dirty; the state of being dirty污染；玷污；弄脏，如：air/water pollution空气╱水污染
- in charge of：负责、掌管、主管，如：An experienced engineer is in charge of the project.一位有经验的工程师负责这次工程。而in the charge of 照护、被……主管、被负责，上面例句可以改成：The project is in the charge of an experience engineer.
- industriousness：persevering determination to perform a task勤勉，勤奋
- In addition to：除……以外，用来表示加以补充
- qualification/,kwɒlɪfɪ'keɪʃ(ə)n/：a skill, personal quality, or type of experience that makes you suitable for a particular job or position技能条件，资格；资历，如：the US qualification for the World Cup 美国的世界杯参赛资格
- be absent from：缺席，如：The absentee is a person who is absent from work.那位缺席者编造了一个有病的借口。
- bump into：撞到，意外碰到，如：I bump into someone. 我撞到人。
- mirth /mɜːθ/：happiness and laughter欢乐；欢笑，如：Her body began to shake with mirth. 她笑得浑身直颤。great mirth在文中写出喝醉酒的Bessie让客人感到十分好笑和欢乐。
- come to the conclusion：得出结论，文中that Bessie was drunk作conslusion的同位语，起解释说明作用。
- the moment：立刻，马上；一……就……，相当于as soon as、immediately、the minute等，如:I fell in love with you the moment I saw you.=I fell in love with you as soon as I saw you.我对你一见钟情。
- the final catastrophe：最后的灾难，指的是前文“Bessie端着布丁，在地毯上摔跤，然后布丁砸在餐桌上”。
- have a difficult time in sth./doing sth.在……存在困难，如：I have difficulty in driving.开车对我来说，是件吃力的事情。
- stack /stæk/：a neat pile of things〔叠放整齐的〕一叠，一堆，一摞 ，如：stacks of dirty dishes 一摞摞脏盘子
- find one’s way…：找到……的路，文中的had mysteriously found their way是拟人用法，如：The word has found it way into some diplomatic documents.这个词已在一些外交文件中使用。
- cellar /'selə/：a room under a house or other building, often used for storing things地窖，地下贮藏室，如：a coal cellar 煤窖
