MAN: It begins quite slowly.
WOMAN: With a look.
MAN : Or a gesture.
- gesture: n. a movement of part of your body, especially your hands or head, to show that you mean or how you feel 手势,姿态
WOMAN: And once the invitation is accepted
MAN: The tango begins.
- tango: 探戈舞
WOMAN: It is a dance of anticipation.
- anticipation: n. when you are expecting something to happen 预感,期待
MAN: Seduction.
- seduction: n. an act of persuading someone to have sex with you for the first time 诱惑
WOMAN: Desire.
- desire: n. a strong hope or wish; a strong wish to have sex with someone 欲望,性欲
MAN: And love. You know, some say it takes two to tango.
- take to something: to start doing something regularly 开始
WOMAN: But sometimes, lurking in the dark... .
- lurk: v. to wait somewhere quietly and secretly, usually because you are going to do something wrong 潜伏,埋伏
MAN:Is a third.
- third: n. one of three equal parts of something 第三(这里指“第三者”)
- 这里的意思是探戈舞一开始是两个人跳的,但是有时候在黑暗处潜伏着第三者。
MAN: Now, if you choose to dance with him, be prepared to deal with the consequences. For passion can turn to jealousy. Love can become violent.
- deal with:to takeactioninordertoachievesomething or inordertosolveaproblem处理,应付
- consequence: n. something that happens as a result of a particular action or set of conditions 结果
- passion: n. a very strong feeling of sexual love 激情
- jealousy: n. a feeling of being unhappy because someone has something that you wish you had 嫉妒
- violent: adj. involving actions that are intended to injure or kill people, by hitting them etc 暴力的
WOMAN: Yes. The tango exists to remind us the greatest love stories.
MAN: End in death. [GASPING.]
- end in something: to finish in a particular way
- 原句:”The tango exists to remind us (that) the greatest love stories will end in death.”剧中是两个不同的人分开说的,第二个人省略了“will”
Rob: Just a reminder, I've got that project due tomorrow.
- reminder: n. something that makes you notice, remember, or think about something 暗示,提醒
- just a reminder: 只是一个提醒(中文:我提醒一下)
- due: Things that aredueare owed — it's time to come up with them. Loans, library books, and school assignments usually have aduedate期限,预计的日期
- project due: 结项目的预计日期
Beth Ann: So you'll be working late again?
Rob: Afraid so. Sorry, honey. What are your big plans for the day?
Beth Ann: Oh, nothing interesting. Need to drop by the dry cleaners. After that, I'll go to the market for some shopping. And then I might have lunch with a new friend.
- drop by: to visit someone you know, usually without arranging a particular time 顺便拜访,路过
April: This is your phone number.
Beth Ann: Oh, I thought you should have it, now that we're getting to be chums. This way, if you ever need someone to go with you to the movies...
- chum: n. a good friend (informal) 密友(非正式)
April: I can call you up. Got it.
- call someone up: to make a phone call to someone 给某人打电话
Beth Ann: Now, I rent a room from a lovely couple. The wife's name is also Sheila. So, if you call and she answers...
April: Then I'll ask for the other Sheila.
Beth Ann: Exactly. Busy this week?
April: Uh, my schedule is pretty open, except for tonight. I have a date.
- schedule: n. a plan of what someone is going to do and when they are going to do it 时间表,计划表
- open: adj. accessible to all 敞开的(这里指“日程上没有什么安排”)
[LAUGHS.]
Beth Ann: With your married man?
April: He finished some big project at work. To celebrate, he got us reservations at this really fancy night club.
- reservation: n. an arrangement which you make so that a place in a hotel, restaurant, plane etc is kept for you at a particular time in the future 预约,预定,保留
- fancy: adj. fancy hotel, restaurant, cars etc are expensive and fashionable 昂贵的,精致的
Beth Ann: He's taking you out? In public?
April: For the first time. It's like an actual boyfriend.
[LAUGHS.]
Beth Ann: Isn't that nice?
Taylor: Yes. Um, no, I understand, it's just that I've been through the deposition twice and I couldn't find anything useful. [ELECTRIC GUITAR PLAYING.] Eli. Eli. Yes. I will check again. Sure. [STRUMMING GUITAR.] What's that?
- through: v. past one stage in a composition to the next stage 翻阅
- deposition: a statement written or recorded for a court of law, by someone who has promised to tell the truth 证词/宣誓作证(法律用语)
- 美国取证会(deposition),涉及对证人的宣誓进行纪录,庭外口头证词精缩为书面记录,以供日后在法庭上使用。剧中Taylor口中的"deposition"指的是取证会是所得的证词材料。
- strum: v. to play an instrument such as a Guitar by moving your fingers up and down across its strings 弹(吉他等),拨弦
Eli: Got it this morning. It's pretty sweet, right?
Taylor: Uh, don't you already have a guitar?
Eli: Yeah, no, honey, this is a bass. Five strings, it sounds totally different. Check it out.
- string: n. one of the long thin pieces of wire, nylon etc that are stretched across a musical instrument and produce sound 弦,琴弦
-Taylor: Very cool.
Eli: Yeah. Oh, are you going to the kitchen? -
Taylor: Yeah.
Eli: Could you grab me a soda?
- grab someone something: to get some food quickly to someone because he is busy 给某人拿食物等
Taylor: Sure.
Eli: With the, the crushy ice? Love you.
- crushy: “crush”作为名词有“粉碎”的意思,在英文中将名词+y变成形容词使用,这里"crushy ice"表示碎冰块。
[SIGHS.]
Taylor: Hey.
Jade: Hey. Did you hear the big news? Eli bought a bass.
Taylor: Oh, I heard.
Jade: He thinks it's gonna help him work through his writer's block.
- work through: to deal with problems or unpleasant feelings 解决问题或不愉快
- block: n. something that prevents movement or progress 障碍,阻塞
- 这里的意思是“Eli买Bass是为了迈过他写作上的瓶颈。”
Taylor: Great. That's how he ended up with his other guitar, the Xbox and the elliptical.
- end up with: topossesssomethingattheendorasaresultofsomethingelse以···告终,得到
- the Xbox: 游戏机
- the elliptical: 交叉(椭圆)训练机,用于模拟楼梯攀爬,行走或跑步
Jade: Got it. So, how was your day?
Taylor: Mm. It was crazy busy. I didn't even get a chance to eat lunch.
Jade: Oh, God, you have to try this. Here. It's hot. Careful.
Taylor: Mmm. That's amazing.
Jade: It's good, right?
Taylor: Yeah.
