The Mother’s Dream William Barnes(1801-86)

I’d a dream to-night As I fell asleep, Oh ! the touching sight Makes me still to weep : Of my little lad, Gone to leave me sad, Aye, the child I had, But was not to keep.

As in heaven high, I my child did seek, There, in train, came by Children fair and meek, Each in lily white, With a lamp alight ; Each was clear to sight, But they did not speak.

Then, a little sad, Came my child in turn, But the lamp he had, Oh! it did not burn ; He, to clear my doubt, Said, half turned about, ‘Your tears put it out ; Mother, never mourn.’

母亲的梦

我今夜做了一个梦

当我入眠时，

啊！那伤人的会面

使我到现在还流着泪：

和我的小不点儿，

是的，我曾经的孩子

但却没有留住

在那高高的天堂

我找我的小孩

在那，接连不断过来了

可爱又温顺的孩子们

每个都是白百合般的装束

手拿一盏点燃着的灯

每个都能清楚瞧见

但谁也不说话

然后，有些沮丧地

我的孩子顺着走过来，

可是他手上的灯

啊！并没有亮着；

他，为了消除我的疑惑

开了口，半侧过脸，

"你的眼泪熄灭了它；

妈妈，不要伤心了。"
