“I did not expect to meet you here,” said Sofya Petrovna, looking at the ground and prodding at the last year’s leaves with the tip of her parasol, “and now I am glad we have met. I want to speak to you seriously and [1] once for all. I beg you, Ivan Mihalovitch, if you really love and respect me, please make an end of this pursuit of me! You follow me about like a shadow, you are continually looking at me not in a nice way, making love to me, writing me strange letters, and... and I don’t know where it’s all going to end! Why, what can come of it?”
“没想到能在这里遇到您，”索菲娅一边说，一边看着地面，用遮阳伞尖拨弄去年留下的树叶，“很高兴见到您，但是我要和您严肃地谈一谈。伊万，如果您真的爱我，尊重我，希望您能放过我！您跟着我，如影随形，这不太好，您不停地表白，给我写奇怪的信，而且……而且我不知道哪里才是尽头，不知道会出什么乱子。”
Ilyin said nothing. Sofya Petrovna walked on a few steps and continued:
