PREFACE.

The Compiler places this volume before the public in the confident hope that he is thereby filling a long-felt want. The progress of China in Steam Shipping during the past twenty years has been most remarkable. From the tiny steam-launch to the latest specimen of the stately ironclad, her crafts are now gradually occupying every waterway of the Empire. Naval arsenals, docks, and many other institutions necessary to a maritime nation are springing up on every side. The possibilities of the future in this direction seem practically unlimited, when we consider the enormous extent of this country, with a coast line stretching through so many latitudes that its northern extremity lies ice bound for morе than three months of the year, while the southern end welters in tropical beat where frost is unknown. And yet, aids to scientific knowledge of ship building are few and unsatisfactory.

The compiler therefore feels that he need make no apology for publishing this contribution towards a better mutual understanding between Chinese and Foreigners of the terms for the component parts of the machinery, the rig, and the general fittings of vessels navigating these waters. In a professional experience of many years he has often suffered from the absence of such a help, and this, combined with similar complaints from friends, has prompted him to make some effort to improve matters. Many difficulties have been encountered, as was to be expected, among others, the Chinese designations proved the most serious, and, when some two hundred copies of the work were already printed, the Chinese text was found to contain so many technical errors and incongruities that it had to be almost entirely re-written. This has entailed very considerable delay in the appearance of the book, but in its present form the compiler believes that it will be equally intelligible to the educated Chinese scientist and to the dockyard artisan. The labour of revision was undertaken by two gentlemen attached to the Viceroy's Yamên at Wuchang, Lieutenant Huang Fu-hua and Magistrate Chêng Ch'êng. To them and to Mr. Tsai Sih-yung, Taotai and Director of the Hopeh Board of Mines, under whose direction the revision was carried out and who was kind enough to write the Chinese Preface, as also to Mr. George Brown, H.B.M.'s Consul at Kiukiang, for much encouragement and valuable assistance, the most grateful thanks of the compiler are due. 輪船類繫圖考序

自中西互市以來，泰西各國，凡象緯、輿圖、厯算，及化電光氣，種種新法，爭奇競勝，於寰海七萬里中，夐乎不可思議矣。蓋天地之運會日開，人心之知能亦日闢，故其數術之精，製作之巧，造物無所蘊其靈，考工不能參其智，自書典所載，未之前聞也。而製造之切於日用者，上而軍國，下而市廛，夙宵千里，疾於飛鳥，則尤以輪船爲上務。顧其中機物纷輪，千端萬緒，見者茫然，即管駛者亦習其事而不窺其秘。蓋其類殊，其物異，其名目繁夥，雖巧者求其法不得。必圖而象之，而其法始闡著。必分圖而象之，而其法始賅備。派君嘉，博物精學，窮極幽眇，而於輪船窾竅尤所駐心。凡其全船之材器，規之矩之，平之直之，巨之纖之，表之裏之，奇之耦之，首之尾之，經而緯之，離而合之，參互而錯綜之，原委而始終之。一圖而數十器，一船而數十圖，罔不貫心鬭角，條分件晰。凡爲圖若干，每圖系以泰西文字，復繹以漢文，都爲一書，付之手民。開卷按圖，朗然在目，如晻曖之燭照也，如歧途之指南也，如醫者之禁方而盡見五臟癥結也。派君斯著，可謂寓成象效法之妙者矣。書成，徵序於余。余執玩數周，覈之西學，其名目麄有舛誤。爰屬鄭大令恂甫、黄總戎晴初詳爲釐改，始臻完善。爲命之曰輪船類繫圖考。是圖出，則知合爲船，分亦成物。前之班倕瞠目而不能名者，今則一一得之，人人知之，無體不備，無義不精，不特可補藝圃之缺，海上利涉，其有益於縱橫風濤間者，實非細微，故不辭而敘其篇首云。光緒十有九年歲次癸巳九月中澣毅若蔡錫勇謹序
