女性堕胎和女权 Abortion and Women Rights
It has been a while since my last English diary. Recently, I have picked up a mini–British TV series called Breathless, which depicts a group of OBGY doctors and nurses in National Medical Care industry of 1960s. The whole show centers around a series of social conflicts and family life triggered by the law that no abortion was permitted during 1960s. Women who got pregnant often had two choices including getting married before the stomach showing or risked their lives for illegal abortion. Or they would be a outcast and family shame forever.

A good show often inspires the audiences to think beyond and Breathless is one of them. I could not help thinking about the factors played in this debate. As Mr. Powell said:" The law makes miserable women and miserable life". People who often disapprove abortion are under the influence of religious belief. All lives should not be terminated. However, women are in physically disadvantage. The conceiving of a baby is an outcome of a woman and a man. But women are left alone to deal with the side effects. Besides, most of women cannot afford to become a single mother. If you know a baby will have a terrible life after the birth, should the baby still be brought to the world for suffering? My answer is no.
I talked to Mr. Hubby about this debate since he is a catholic. He said a more essential question lies in the debate about defining a life. Do you consider a one-month-old fetus a life? What about three months? What about six months? I am still thinking! At this moment, I dare to say that the TV show title is certainly justified.
What do you guys think? This is actually a relevant question still in heated debate today, especially in countries with religion. Comments and feedbacks are welcome and appreciated.
