An Unthinkable Legend
Back in 1934 when Bobby Jones, the founder of Augusta National Golf Club, stood before the newly completed course in a quiet valley on the outskirts of Augusta, Georgia USA, never did he expect that one day the course would become a temple of golf with a reputation no less than Old Course in St Andrews, or could he imagine that the tournament, which he started to celebrate the completion of the course, would survive and even become one of the four major championships in professional golf – Masters Tournament.
In 1930, 28-year-old Bobby Jones snatched four victories in British Open, British Amateur, U.S. Open and U.S. Amateur in the same year, making him the first person to win the Grand Slam of golf. However, still in his prime and thousands of good swings left, Jones suddenly retired from competitive golf.
After retiring from competitive golf, he led a careless and leisurely life, but soon he found that he was constantly upset by his long-cherished dream of constructing a golf course like Old Course in St Andrews. Although Jones had a vision for what Augusta National could become, he enlisted the expertise of one of the game’s greatest golf architects, Dr. Alister Mackenzie, to build his own Old Course. After four years of unremitting efforts, Augusta National Golf Club was finally completed, yet sadly Alister died just before the course opening. The later success and reputation of Augusta National could be a comfort for the old man in heaven, which might be counted as a different kind of fulfilment.
Nice Names for Holes
At noon, the sun shines too brightly on the Washington Road, so at this hour you might as well find shelter in a coffee shop along the street and have a cup of coffee and a paper. Outside the shop, the streets are crowded and people wait in long queues before restaurants and discount stores. About 300 yards away from this uproarious place, a lane lined with umbrella trees leads to a quiet gate with a board standing right before, on which writes “Members Only”. Well, it’s none other than Augusta National Golf Club. Behind the gate, the elite of the country can put behind their eminent statuses and swing clubs like average people enveloped in a cosy atmosphere of golf and friendship.
According to the National Geographic’s 50 Places of a Lifetime, Augusta National Golf Club is on the list. Yet it remains an unattainable dream for most of us, because there is no application process and membership is strictly by invitation. For old members, if you fail to receive bills from Augusta National in September, it means that you are not welcome any more. A male-only club right now, it only has about 300 members at any given time.
Also worthy of note, it is closed all summer, from the third week of May until mid-October, primarily for renovations and green maintenance.
The course has a unique feature that each hole is named after the tree, flower or shrub with which it has become associated. For example, Hole No. 15 has its name “Fire Thorn” for fire thorns are abundant around the green and fairway; there are also nice hole names like Golden Bell and Yellow Jasmine.
Amen Corner refers to the 11th, 12th and 13th holes and was coined by American golf author Herbert Warren Wind to describe the critical action that takes place here. Herbert thinks that golfers need to pray here for their balls. It has been the defining area for many golf masters.
Green Jacket: A Glory of One's Life
Green jacket is one of the unique elments of The Masters Tournament. In fact, the first green jacket was made to distinguish members from non-members, so as to the sponsors could easily tell and provide services and informations to the audiences.Later on, it was rewarded to the champion of the Masters with the honorary club membership as well.
Now the green jacket became a tradition of the Masters which meant grand golf status. The first green jacket was made by Brooks Wear in New York in 1937.The first player to wear green jacket was Sam Sidney. Since 1967, the Hamilton Wear in Cincinnati State started to be in full charge of making green jacket. All the materials were thicker woolen transported from Forstmann Company in Dublin. Each of the green jacket was sewn by clothing master Georgia Berg with silk, and each name of the owner was sewn in the jacket as an honor. As usual, the green jacket was allowed to wear in the club only, and did not be allowed for commercial use.
So far,the Augusta green jacket is still a life sought-after goal for all the golf players. Its meaning of glory is still having no match when it comes to golf.
Long-standing Prominence
The Masters Tournament, which runs at Augusta National Golf Club every year and follows the original rules, is probably the No.1 game in golf world. Of no doubt, it’s really hard for professionals to rank the four major championships, namely British Open, U.S. Open, Masters Tournament and PGA Tour, nonetheless most experts still regard Masters Tournament as the No.1 among the four tournaments for three reasons:
First, it is the only invitational event among the four tournaments, entry being controlled by the Augusta National Golf Club.
Second, it has the largest purse of the four major championships and the total prize money and winner prize is the highest, with a total of $7,500,000 in 2010.
Third, it is the only one of the four majors which is held at the same location. It is hosted at Augusta National Golf Club every April.
一是它是四大赛事之中唯一的纯邀请赛,没有预选赛,俱乐部委员会独立自主的邀请决定着它的尊贵;
二是它在四大赛事之中总奖金和冠军奖金都是最高的,其中2010年总奖金更是高达惊人的750万美金;
In terms of competition, a fixed location can provides a relatively fair environment and test genuinely players’ game skills.
Therefore, Augusta, just a quiet city with a population of 200,000, attracts the whole world’s attention each April from 1934. Fans around the world flood into the famous course, the Mecca of golf, where top golf players assemble to fight for the finest glory.
Augusta National has always been the arena for star players to shine. Past famous players include Jack Nicklaus, who won his sixth green jacket at the age of 46 in 1986 and Tiger Woods who in 1997 shot a 18-under-par total, breaking the Masters record of total strokes held up for 32 years.

【Tips】The 2010 Masters Tournament Recaps
Lefty Mickelson fought to crown with his wife watching
Sad Tiger ended up with nothing in his first return game
So let’s focus directly on the most competitive final round of the Masters Tournament. With one stroke behind his other opponent Lee Westwood before April 12th, Phil Mickelson finished a bogey-free final round of 5-under 67 and brought his tournament total to 16-under 272 (67-71-67-67), thus claiming his third green jacket and fourth major.
With a stable start, Phil charged for champion from the Amen Corner. With a par putt at 11th hole and two birdies at 12th and 13th, he captured a wonderful total of 14-under, thus paving the way for his later victory.
On the other hand, Phil’s great rival, Tiger Woods, was not that lucky. Though recorded two eagles at seventh hole and fifteenth hole in the fourth round, Woods distanced himself from winning for some rare slips. In the end, he tied for fourth place with his group opponent K.J. Choi. Sadly to say, Augusta National Golf Course was clearly not his happy land this year.
A Stunning Final Round
It was quite obvious that Anthony Kim, one of the two players who shot a lowest score of 65 in the final round, put on a more dazzling performance. Despite trailing seven strokes behind after finishing the first nine holes, Kim made a strong charge towards Masters at the final nine holes. With two consecutive birdies at 13th and 14th hole, then an eagle at 15th hole and again a birdie at 16th hole, he moved into second place, one stroke behind Mickelson, quite a feat for a young man.
Nick Watney was the other 65-round player, who carded eight birdies in the final round and finished in seventh place.
At last, also worth mentioning was the fore-mentioned fifty-year-old Fred Couples who finished in sixth place. It’s a commendable achievement for this is the best score for golf players over 50 at Augusta National Golf Club.
