Character Study: Lapis Lazuli from Steven Universe

S1 Mirror Gem + Ocean Gem

Actions:

• comes to like Steven
• steals the ocean to go back to homeworld
• fights the Crystal Gems
• tries to drown Steven and Connie (...) and hurts Greg

Motivation:

• trapped in the mirror on Earth for X thousand years
• was mistaken for a Crystal Gem by homeworld gems and was punished for that
• therefore probably hates the Crystal Gems and doesn't give a shit about Earth :)

Implications:

• brings the Crystal Gems potential threat about interference from homeworld since Lapis is still "on their side" and would probably tell the Diamonds about Crystal Gems still being on Earth

Honestly, probably because I am very biased, I thought the Crystal Gems were being unreasonably hostile toward Lapis and them not realizing she was in the mirror was very messed up, but now that I think about how they were constantly at war with homeworld gems, it is reasonable for them to worry about anything that might call attention from homeworld and thus threatens peace on Earth. Lapis trying to drown Steven and Connie is a big yikes, but given that she has no reason to give a shit about humans and the Earth, it's not totally unreasonable.

All in all: Lapis is just released from the mirror that trapped her for thousands of years and is definitely very traumatized. :((((
