连接符号

• Dash --------= that is to say

He is trash--he is good for nothing= He is trash. That is to say, he is good for nothing.

• Colons :::::::
• Semicolons= ,+连词
• ****分号取代逗号 for clarity(当有插入语的时候，更好说明关系）

He said that he had no money, that he had no friends to count on, and that he expected me to help him

BETTER: He said that he had no money; that, because of his ill temper, he had no friends to count on; and that he expected me to help him.

并列连词

AND

Both... and... (plural subjects)

Both Peter and Mary work hard.

He succeeded both because of his intelligence and （because of his) hard work.

He succeeded both because he is intelligent and (because he) works and.

XXXXX: Both he is good at English, and he is good at math.

✅: He is both good at English and Math.

OR

Either...or...

Either he or I am silly.

He succeeded either because of his intelligence or (because of his) hard work.

He succeeded either because he was intelligent or (because he) works hard.

Either you should listen to me, or you should get out of my sight

BETTER: You should either listen to me or get out of my sight.

Neither...nor...

Neither you nor he is to blame. (neither or you)

❌Neither you can talk here, nor you can eat here ✅You can neither talk nor eat here.

BUT

Not...but...

Not he but I am to be reponsible.

Not he but you are wrong. (not he is wrong, but you are wrong一般）

Not only...but also...

Not only they but also John has passed the exams.

Not only can she sing, but she can also dance.

倒装：助动词倒装， 不能去掉，but句正常

❌Not only she is clever, but he is (also) polite

✅ Not only is she clever, but he is also polite.

✅ Not only has he learned a lot from his teacher, but he has done quite well in his studies

✅ Not only does she sing well, but she dances beautifully

Not only can she dance, but she can (also) sing instead of Not only can she dance, but also she can sing （一定要分开，当连接句子的时候）

As well as; rather than

We as well as John like it= We, as well as John, like it

We rather than John love it= We, rather than John, love it

副词性连词

but- however, nevertheless;

so- therefore, thus

and- moreover, in addition, furthermore

(WHILE当连词使用）

othewirse (You must work hard; otherwise I will fire you.= You must work hard, or I will fire you.

As虽然 As rich as he is= Rich as he is= Though he is rich
