Slam Brutal Death Metal style is one of the most popular styles nowadays. There are a lot of excellent bands in every country. Today I want to introduce to you a band from the United States, Nephrectomy, which was formed by Jaymes Grundmann in 2008. A one-man band, the band was originally named Twatrot and released two demo works, officially changed its name to Nephrectomy in 2012, and invited the Russian singer Vad to join the band briefly, the band will release a large number of works every year, 2022 The band released their latest album "Meat" in 2018, and not long ago I contacted the founder of the band Jaymes Grundmann for an exclusive interview (V: on behalf of the author J: on behalf of Jaymes Grundmann)

Hello brother, very happy to meet you and thank you very much for participating in this interview. I think you may not know that you have fans of your band in far away China. First of all, say hello to your Chinese fans. Of course I believe This is also the first time your band has accepted an interview from a Chinese magazine. Nephrectomy is a veteran band. Who proposed to form this band in the first place?

The band was started by me (Jaymes Grundmann) in 2008. It was originally a one man band and the first project I played guitar in. I was mostly known for my vocals in Intracranial Butchery, Expurgate and Dragging Entrails.

In 2008, you changed your name to Nephrectomy after you released two demo works under the name of Twatrot, so why did you change the name of the band? Your band has undergone a major reform from 2020 to 2021. Except for Jaymes Grundmann, the other members have changed. Why did the band change its members? Does the new member’s breach of contract bring you any new ideas?

I changed the name to Nephrectomy because I joked that I partied so hard eventually I would lose my kidneys.

You have released a large number of works, including four official new albums. Are you all recording these albums in your home studio? Which mixer made the album for you?

Yes! Every Nephrectomy release has been recorded DIY at home, but we’ve worked with different producers to mix and master over the years. The last album, No Lives Matter, as well as the split with Embryectomy and Psychpsomatic Self Mutilation were produced by Tiago from Analepsy. Our new album, Meat, was produced by Pat Patino from Djinnghul.

V: Your music theme is about zoophilia, which is a kind of mental illness. It is achieved through sex with animals. Why did you choose such a music theme? Does your song have lyrics? Who created these lyrics? What was his inspiration?

I’ve come up with all Nephrectomy song titles and lyrics over the years. My goal is to make the most obscenely, grotesque concepts that I can, while still being clever and mixing in a bit of humor. Sadly a lot of death metal bands get lazy and only write songs about rape, dead babies and murdering prostitutes and i’ve always thought that’s corny as fuck. Our new album, Meat, is the only Nephrectomy material that has lyrics and I put a lot of heart and soul into them. For instance the title track “Meat” is a leftist critique of “woke” PC identity politics and how it’s used by corporations to distract and confuse the working class. “Shitswallower” and “Throbbing Obelisk” are about all the different forms of mind control we’re subjected to everyday. “Buttfucking The Gutted” was inspired by a conversation I had with an old convict when I was in jail. He told me, “Prison rape really isn’t even about sex, it’s about sheer domination. Beating someone in a fight is one thing, but you take someone’s manhood and they lose a piece of their soul.”

I like your logo very much, who designed this logo for you, and your album artwork is also great, especially the 2014 album artwork fits your music theme very much, of course my favorite Or is it your new album artwork that will be released in 2022, all of which are designed by the same designer for you?

Gruesome Graphx did the art for Geriatric Coprophilia (2013), Interspecies Bondage (2014) and Rarities of Fetishism (2017). Nephrectomy wouldn’t be Nephrectomy without his grotesquely silly art. Our third full length, No Lives Matter (2018) was done by Ethan from Primitive Man. Our new album, Meat (2022) was done by Armaada Art. It’s probably one of my favorite album covers ever.

You have released Spilt albums with some excellent bands, such as Embryectomy, Psychosomatic Self-Mutilation, $lutrot, Congenital Anomalies, Disfigurement Of Flesh, Anus Tumor, Gangrene Discharge, etc. which I am familiar with. How did you work with these bands? Did the band get in touch and release the album together?

The 4 way split with Stillbirth, Congenital Anomalies and Disfigurement of Flesh was put together by the label. I love the material but I don’t know any of those dudes personally. Every other split was planned by the bands. Mats from Psychosomatic Self Mutilation and Kraanium has been a good friend since 2010. We even did a band together called Dragging Entrails that put out 2 full lengths.

You have worked with many famous labels such as Morbid Generation Records, Amputated Vein Records, Pathologically Explicit Recordings, Bizarre Leprous Production, etc., so how did you get in touch with these labels to release albums for you? Among these labels, which label do you think is the most satisfactory to you? Your new album in 2022 will be released on the Coyote Records label in Russia, so why did you choose this label to release your new album for you?

With every Nephrectomy release I just sent a sample of the material and asked if they were interested in releasing it. It’s gotten a lot easier now that we have a catalogue and reputation, but really all you can do is reach out and hope for the best. I’ve had great experiences with every label we’ve worked with and I’d even consider Frank from Morbid Generation Records a friend at this point. His support helped make Nephrectomy the band it is today. We chose to work with Coyote because they gave us the best offer and I really respect their catalogue. Coyote has been a pleasure to work with, the CD’s and Cassettes they printed are top-notch and they promoted the album well.

First of all, congratulations in advance for the release of your fourth official album in 2022. I look forward to this album very much. I am a big fan of your band. I have been following your band since the album "Geriatric Coprophilia" in 2013, although I am not complete. I’ve heard all of your albums, but I’m very impressed with your band. Your arrangement is not very complicated, but it sounds very refreshing and morbid. My favorite is the singer’s singing, very The deep guttural sounds make your music more morbid and numb, so do you have any insights and opinions on your own work? Do you have any comments on the new album?

Thank you for the kind words! The beauty of Nephrectomy is that you can see the growth of my musicianship. Geriatric Coprophilia (2013) was the first album that I played guitar or wrote the songs for. While it’s belligerently brutal, it’s also incredibly simple song writing. Then over the years my influences changed and skills grew to the band we have today. While I am the vocalist now, I wrote a lot of the songs and riffs on the new album. Our former guitarist Grant Nachbur from Djinnghul did a lot of work with me, as well writing “Tumorous Gluttony” entirely. The new album is a combination of all of my favorite elements of brutal death metal with all of my favorite elements of beatdown hardcore. Typically when people try to do that the end result is just generic deathcore, but I think we really made a solid album, start to finish.

Can you introduce the creation process of the new album?

Grant and I would sit down with a guitar, laptop and a few beers over at his apartment and just hang out. We worked with eachother really well and the songs just kind of flowed together. I wrote 2 of the songs by myself and he wrote 1 by himself. The last track of the album was an 11 minute power electronics jam session with my good friend and lo-fi electronics producer Foans. He used a couple analog synths and a sampler and I played a bass through a bunch of pedals. We also recorded it with a handheld analog field recorder so it has a real visceral vibe to it.Our new guitarist Tyler Boyce did a lot for the recording process and helped make the album what it is today. He really pushed me to try new things and push myself as a vocalist. We recorded all the vocals at his studio and he made sure I put everything I could into every single take. Him and our other guitarist, Joe Johnson, also had to re-record “Goons Gone Wild” and “Stomped Out By Retards” from scratch because we had lost the stems. This album was made during a very turbulent period of my life. It was originally supposed to be finished years ago but my drug abuse got terrible during the pandemic and got me into legal trouble. There was a point during my last relapse that I had given up and was sure that this album would never be heard…But as I was sitting in jail I set a goal to finish this album and finally take my life, my music and my sobriety seriously. When I got out, I put all of my focus on finishing Meat and was determined to make a unique and creative slam album that you could listen to from start to finish. This album gave me an outlet to express and process my emotions with and a healthy project to spend my time on, it played a large role in my sobriety.

You are a veteran band, I think you must have participated in many music festivals, so what kind of music has left you a deep impression, can you introduce the atmosphere at the time? Have you performed live with those bands?

There are two fests that I’ve played over the years that really stand out to me. I got to do vocals for Cerebral Incubation at Las Vegas Death Fest 2010. We shared the stage and partied with great bands like Condemned and Vulvectomy and I even got vocal tips from Angel from Condemned at that show. However the most influential show, was when my old band Expurgate played Gutter Christ’s New Jersey Deathfest in 2011. Not only did the lineup have legendary brutal death bands like Digested Flesh (my all-time favorite slam band), Internal Bleeding, Waking the Cadaver, Dysentery and Insidious Decrepancy. There were great beatdown hardcore bands like Vow of Hatred (all-time favorite beatdown band), Enemy Mind, Line of Scrimmage and Lifeless. It was the first hardcore show I ever saw and I fell in love with it. Since that show I’ve always tried to implement elements of hardcore into my writing.
