被评之书的作者，物理学家 Steven Koonin，并不是气候变化怀疑论者（如果这个词不被误用的话）。他是不满于作为末日论产业一部分的大众媒体所渲染的恐慌前景，认为其与科学界的实际认识明显不符。本书重点采用（写作时最新版的）IPCC 报告和美国国家气候评估报告等权威信源，指出了一些不太多见于舆论的信息，如：全球平均气温上升，主要体现为低温不再那么低，而不是高温变得更高；极端低温的日子变少了，但极端高温出现的频率较一个世纪前并未明显增加；近几十年来飓风造成的经济损失大大增加，并不是由于飓风本身的频率或强度提高（因为基本上没这回事），而是飓风受灾地区的财富多了。
